I have a beautiful rednose pit, and he isn't fixed......he is a retired stud. I bathe him 2x monthly, and would do it more often, but I don't want to dry his skin. He is an awesome dog, and I love him so much. But...........he smells, really bad!!! I had to make him get off the bed last night, cause I couldn't sleep with the smell. It is like old shoes, ball cheese, and ejaculate. Yes, because he is not neutered, he leaks constantly. He also likes to blow himself!!! I think he smells so bad cause he drips at all times...I am constantly washing the floor. I will no longer let him chill on the couch....too wet after he gets up. I love him, and don't want to fix him, cause when we fixed his Mother, it changed her personality. He is the best dog ever, I just wish I could get him to smell better!!! Anyone else have an un neutered male dog, with this problem? Anyone have any suggestions to help with the smell? Anyone else have a smelly pit????

I have two, a red nose and also a blue nose. Red is a female, blue is a male. Luckily they dont smell really, but I do bathe them once a week. I know you are worried about their skin drying out, but I use Aveeno baby wash. It is made with oatmeal, and it does not dry their skin at all. T

he only problem I have with my male smelling is when the dumbass steps in shit outside before I get the chance to pick it up, and he tracks it through the house. The lady let him out the other morning, and he comes back in to do his daily alarm clock face licking, and I got the biggest whiff of poop. Let's just say I had a fun morning washing both dogs and mopping the whole house. Hope that helps.

Oh, he is also 10 years old....I don't want to fix him, but he is like a leaky faucet. The smell is awful on his bed, and the bed is washed every other day. I just don't want it to change his personality...he has always been a chill dude, he will post up, like a soldier, in front of peeps he likes, and he is so loving. I just don't want to fix him, and have him turn into a recluse, like his Mother did, when we fixed her. Thanks for all the suggestions......love IC mag!!!!

Yea, I get a lot of shit from my vet, and some other people for not getting him fixed, but when you got a set like these
picture.php

how could anyone possibly take them away from you?

Haha, my dog is my best friend in the world, he would literally walk in the fires of hell if he thought it was going to make me happy. They are the best dogs out there, shame they have such a bad rap.

It sounds to me that your loving Pit has a Systemic Yeast Infection. There are a lot of things you can do to help your friend, neutering him is not one of them. Can you tell me if he has any other skin problems? Odd smell coming from the ears?

ps. Glad to be in the company of some other Pit lovers.

Some dogs need to have their anal gland expressed monthly, we used to have it done routinely with one dogs grooming but then i learned how to do it myself and the grooming too. Our dog let us know by being preoccupied with their rear. we express the gland then bath them and they're great for over a month

What are you feeding him? HUGE difference.

My dogs were always super healthy on the rice, carrots and liver diet. They looked and smelled like they'd just had a bath.

I've noticed different smells between different commercial dog foods as well... much prefer the healthy diet.

It's expensive and time consuming though... perhaps you'd find a better smell with just a better brand of dog food? Avoid anything with "byproduct" or "animal digest" or "digest" on the lable. Try to stay away from brands that begin their ingredient list with anything but meat.. (corn is not meat).

Good luck and....

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

p.s. Ladies... this also works with your men. Blood type diet and no processed foods will make your man smell and taste a whole lot better. Just ask my wife. :D

When I asked my vet about my lab's dry skin, he suggested I add salmon oil to his food. Don't use the recommended amount at the start unless you want your dog's shit to turn to water. Gradually build up to the recommended amount. Took care of his dry skin, dandruff and allows me to bathe him once a week. His coat has never looked better.

Get the dogs anal glands emptied ...This should be done anytime they are bathed or taken to the groomers...

raw food all the way! its pretty nasty, but my dog never has any health issues. she eats better than most people
i have an unfixed female and every 10-11 months its drop city all over my house for a month. she has a nub tail, so her diapers wont stay on. luckily my house has alot of tile floor so clean up isnt that bad. put an extra pad and the "period sheets" on the bed and im good to go.
i'd much rather have a bitch any day.

you dog either has a yeast infection (toes, ears) or a clogged anal gland. meds for the first, the second can be relieved by a vet.

he was at the vet about 5 weeks ago, the smell has been persistent for about the last couple of years. No yeast infection, or UTI. It isn't pee that is leaking, either. He is the only male we have ever had, all the others have been females. The vet said to neuter him, and then he won't have that problem anymore. His ears smell fine. he was at a pet spa, right before Christmas, and I assume they drained his anal gland. I have had 5 pits through the years, and he and his Mother, smelled like shit!!!! I just feel bad making him stay on his bed, on the floor. Now that he is the only pit left with us, I want him to stay in bed with us...but he smells. I am going to get him a raised bed, cause he is getting older, and I know, that as I get older, I like things to be easier, lol. He is such a cool dog, our buddy. Maybe I will take him to another vet, for another opinion??? I just worry that the smell drives him crazy!!! Thanks for all the replies, and have a good one...stay HIGH, it's better than being low.

I am also going to try the aveeno bath...maybe bathe him once a week?? I just don't want to mess with his skin, he has a really nice coat, and no dandruff(except when he goes to the vet, lol). I have been doing pawdicures to him, where I wash his feet, cause I thought maybe it was his feet....but it isn't. Smelly old buddy...I just hope he isn't bothered by it.

Could be food allergies. We have a dog with that; his belly skin gets inflamed and smells yeasty. He's allergic to so many foods, it's hard to find anything that doesn't cause any problems. Some are better than others, but we haven't found anything perfect for him yet.

Invest in a grain free dog food made specifically for seniors. There are several brands that make high quality grain free formulas. Blue Buffalo, Orijen, Innova EVO and taste of the wild, to name a few. Look into these foods they are great for your dogs.
