I got my cut of GDP in 09 from a person up the hill who had been working with it since 2000. It would definitely seem to be Pacific Northwestern Big Bud crossed with Urkle. Mendo Purps, Lavender, and Urkle all share similar qualities. However, Mendo X Urkle wouldnt seem to ever make the raunchiness of the GDP. I can smell the big bud from a mile away in the GDP. The Grape Ape is a weird one. I have seen a Skunk #1 pheno that didnt purple and smelled grapier than Grape Krush and I have seen a purple pheno that reminded me of some urkel with a weaker high.

Now out of GDP and Urkle I would definitely pick the Urkle. I love both, but the urkle has the cleanest high, taste, and smell when done right. I love it! GDP is great as well and is a hybrid that does live up to the original. The quality of the high in the Urkle is what I did though. MMmmm Urkle!

I am glad this thread was made, I just picked up a cut of urkle last week, and was debating crossing it with some bubble chunk males. I think I am going to, it should turn out real nice.

Here is a bubble chunk female.

Ive read stories on the boards about all of the cali purples being related to a "purple kush" coming out of southern humbolt....

However, growing up in the bay I was always taught the Purple urkle x Salmon creek lineage for GDP.
Going to run some of Kens seeds outside this year.

I have only grown Qurkel so not the same but it was very good smoke. I have some GDP S1 seeds on the way...I think Erkel has more of a sweet grape flavor. Here is the Qurkel it had a wonderful grape taste and smell.. I have 4 packs of Qurkel to go through..

I like the Lavender we used to grow much more than either. For me it felt like it was in between both Urkle and GDP. I've never grown the Urkle, but it's possible that if it's more finicky, all the samples I've seen were not grown well.

However if I had to choose between Urkle and GDP, I would choose GDP.

I heard the same from some pretty well in the know people. whatever it is urkle, greendaddy, sr71 pk, all the same just different phenos from the same breeding and all relatives with deep chunk without a shadow of a doubt. i got my cut as the original humboldt purple, the mendo purps is a different strain, smells hazy incense pure black flowers and not nearly as dense as the urkle family, we call it the jason king to differentiate cause he pictured some in his books, it also goes by the name purple diesel alot. what ever happened to Nspecta/whitetrashredneck?

For sure. Wasn't arguing but Ur absolutely right maybe they should toss out the big bud and try casey Jones ( imo new and improved big bud) or something like that.

Idk how I missed you saying it has big bud in it*edit*

Got A Purple Jones S, Erkle x Casey Jones1 running right now as a matter of fact.
I REALLy love the GDP cut I have run and will run it again very soon. I am getting a cut of Erkle, or at least that's what we are told. Looks amazing very heady. I question authenticity because of flower size. LARGE flowers. don't matter to me really. The FLAVOR oh how I love that flavor.

Peace

Know you mean well, but that is inaccurate. GDP was made using something different. Urkle I think share no genetic relation at this point...

I used to think the same, but....I've learned. And it's a hard lineage to even attempt to follow...but OvG members should remember...

Gross Domestic Product....the original. Before the tag "GDP" was grandaddy. As I understand it now, there is an old mendo region plant that was utilized '94 - '96 to make many purpled, including Mendo Purps, "da purps", Gran Daddy Purple, Grape Ape, and others....

Keep in mind this is going on that Urkel was held by some as early as '91 and possibly sooner...

This is what I have heard as well

Smoke Buddy

I really enjoyed the GDP every time Ive smoked it. Great flavor, good and strong, nice friendly happy stone...buds are not quite as dense as Urkle but really pretty buds. Its good shit, no complaints at all. Ive been growing Urkle for a couple years now and I have to say it is definitely more potent knock your ass down smoke than GDP. Flavor is slightly different and more pronounced than GDP IME. Urkle flavor definitely does not have a short shelf life as Ive heard mentioned here. If cured and stored properly it keeps that beautiful flavor for months. I voted Urkle.

ya i also disagree with the short shelf life statement... I have some urkle nugs that are about 6-8weeks cured now, and they are MUCH MUCH better tasting now then they were at only a 1-2week cure

Yeah the only thing short about the shelf life of urkle is the time it will set on the shelf. It won't last long so I guess in that sense the shelf life is short.
