Anyone see Valasquez vs. Dos Santos

Did anyone notice before the fight Brock Lesner kept talking about him wanting a rematch with Valasquez, even though he has to win another fight before he gets a shot at the title. Then after the fight, he was stumbling over his words, and said he has to focus on one fight at a time. Seemed like he was scared to death at the thought of fighting Junior Dos Santos.

Brock has no business in the announcing/analyst role.

The fight itself sucked. Too short, and stopped too early. Cain got clipped behind the ear, and it threw his balance off. Kind of a flash KO, you could see him snap back into it right as the ref stopped it. Nice right hand for Dos Santos, but this should have been a fantastic fight. Hopefully we get to see a rematch in the not too distant future, and it lasts a little longer than 1 min. I like Dos Santos, and I'm glad he won, I just wish he would have done it in the 2nd or 3rd round.

I have seen several ko's by this method of punching to the back of head here lately. The announcer always says he got hit in the temple, but I can see they got hit behind the ear. That is why it is illegal to hit to the back of the head, too easy to shock the brain. The blows were legal as the punches were thrown facing the guy and due to him turning his head he gets it from behind slightly.

Yeah, Lesner is gonna get pummeled if he goes against Dos Santos, better hands by far for Dos Santos.

Early stoppage??? Cain was on the mat rolling to his stomach and was doing nothing to protect himself against 9 straight punches to the dome. If you were in that same position, you'd have thanked the ref for jumping in.

How many more undefended punches would you have liked to have seen?

That wasn't an early stoppage...he was rocked and dos santos was gonna hurt him bad if the ref didn't stop it...

That being said...Velasquez is waaaaay better than he looked...

He let dos santos get inside on him easily...you gotta know that wild overhand right is coming at you when he steps in like that.....Dan Henderson is gonna knock Shogun out with an identical punch next ufc..

I agree and disagree. It's a funny spot to get hit. Only 1 maybe 2 of the punches landed well when he was on the ground. You can see him kind of snap back into it, and almost immediately after the stoppage he was up and fine. I've seen refs let them go when fighters are in much worse trouble, then they come back to win the fight. But, it is always better to err on the side of caution. Make sure they can fight another day. But getting clipped behind the ear is a little different than taking a hard blow to the temple or chin. Kind of takes away your balance, but you still have your wits about you, in an odd kind of way.

Oh, maybe I should watch it again, but I believe there were punches to the back of the head when Velasquez was on the ground. Could have been much better for the audience if the ref stopped that, and gave Velasquez 5min to recover. The original punch was to an illegal spot, in a legal manner. The punches to the back of the head on the ground, IMO, were illegal. But, again, I was stoned and should probly watch it again.

Dan Henderson's right hand is fun to watch. I prefer when he throws it straight though. No matter how he throws it, if it brushes your chin, your going down.

The punch was not to the back of the head. It was directly on the ear. The myriad replays after the fight clearly show this. They also show Cain patting the ref on the shoulder agreeing with the stoppage. Also, Cain said the stoppage was justified at the Post Fight Press Conference.

cain didn't think the stoppage was premature...
you could see him look the ref in the face while he was still to fucked to stand and say"i get it"

with heavyweights you dont let the same number of unanswered blows as you do with other weight classes...

fighters can take 7 or 8 GSP shots but 7 or 8 dos santos beans to the noggin and you might need a diaper..

I finally watched the fight again. The overhand right did hit him on the ear, not behind the ear. The last 2-3 punches of the fight were to the back of the head. But I do agree with the stoppage, Cain was out of it, any longer and he would have taken uneccessary blows.

The jab clinic GSP put on for Josh Koscheck was one of my favorite fights. That and the ass whoopin he put on Matt Serra.

yeah actually gsp's striking is excellent. part of it is because he doesnt overexert himself and get emotional, and is relatively cautious. the drawbacks of this is that with world class fighters you cant knock them out since this way.

Nope... Right after Cain rolls over, there is one punch that MAYBE glanced the back of the head, then 3 more directly to the side of the head, then the fight gets called.

GSP has decent striking, but there's no way he'll try to outbox Nick Diaz. He knows he'll get knocked out if he tries. GSP used to be exciting, but nowadays he always plays it safe. He'll do his best to hold down Diaz for 5 rounds for another boring decision win. Nobody at welterweight today is going to win a striking match with Nick Diaz.

I love fighters like Diaz and JDS. They don't just show up to win decisions; they come to finish the fight. The big event over the weekend was only a letdown to me because of the new tv format. If they talk for an hour and the fight's over in a minute, people want more. They should have shown the Henderson / Guida fight too instead of just broadcasting the main event.

If Dos Santos hits you on the ear with his giant fists, he also hits you behind the ear if you want to get technical. When you get to that area and behind it there is real vulnerability to the brain.

The extra shots are to the back of the head as much as they are to the side, right at the edge.

Lets see GSP try to out box Nick Diaz....

I really really really want GSP to get his ass kicked for all 5 rounds....but I personally believe GSP will realize in about the 2nd that Diaz's hands are fucking lethal...he'll probably shoot on him and try to wrestle him around a bit but Diaz will submit him pretty fast if it hits the ground...

Nick Diaz is the truth...I was a doubter for a long time...but his skills are insane.
