Yellowing, lower leaves is often a sign of under-ferting. 1 tsp may not be enough. Try 2 next watering and watch the tips. If the tips of the leaves turn brown (a sign of over-ferting), go back to 1 tsp per. If not, give them all they want!

I'm using Maxibloom now, but used to use 1 tablespoon of FNB per gallon. Note, I was using 12L office trash cans for my buckets, so you might want to take that into consideration, too.

Be proud of your efforts...you're doing well! :tiphat:

PIC UPDATE

Heres a look at how things are going. Decided to go a little crazy and give one of the girls a major haircut, well see how she responds. Also, appear to be having some sort of deficiency of some sort. Maybe calcium? magnesium? only in the one plant though. And just a bunch of sexxy pics too look at :dance013:

I was wondering when i should start to remove some of the larger fan leaves, since i'm running cfl's with aweful penetration, and want to get as much bud from this harvest as possible, even if its little popcorn nuggets. What do you guys think?

Hi mate. Seeing as your plants are small and already in flower, I'd leave the healthy fan leaves alone. You can get rid of the bottom leaves that are PROPER yellow though.

Only de-leaf if you veg bigger plants.

Leaves are curling a bit. A sign of over feeding. Be careful not to "love em to death".

This is your first grow and the way things are looking, you'll make it to harvest and you'll learn from this experience.

Good luck. Peace.

:lurk:

@grassott- I backed off on the nutes a bit yesterday when i fed the girls. Just out of curiosity, what is the reasoning behind not removing the fan leaves? Thanks a lot for responding both here and on the hempy thread

Mornin' man, things are comin' along nicely and you have shown a willingess to learn that will help you succeed, it's better to remain a humble noob able to learn from anyone than to become convinced you already know what you're doing so don't need to learn, from anyone.

Anyway, as there seems to be some confusion about removing leaves I thought i'd post up some homework for ya in case you haven't already found this thread.

De-foliation for increased yields

...and stonedar is right that CFLs don't give much penetration, although they do penetrate better than 4 - 5 inchs, heres a shot from my CFL days where I was running 4 bathroom vanity fixtures with Y-splitters so 8 bulbs per fixture, and with 23s and 26s that meant approx. 200watts per fixture. ...you can't tell in this pic but I was running each fixture over it's own 7gallon DWC so with 4, that meant I was harvesting a DWC bin every 2 weeks and I averaged between 3 and 4 zips per bin, ...so don't let anyone tell you you can't grow quality bud under CFLs, anybody says that they just prove thier own ignorance.

Hi mate. I answered this in the hempy thread. I'm also glad that you've decided to up your game by planning on rocking the 150w hps. You won't be disappointed. Any experienced grower will tell you that hps flowers much better than cfl's.

My son's veg garden is under cfl's too, but when it comes to flowering, you need something with a bit more juice.

CFL-esque bud is airy and fluffy. HPS-esque bud is heavier and dense, but don't take my word for it, try it for yourself.

Also, if you wanna learn, learn from the growers who get better results. That's why I always learn from people like Hempy.

I was just wondering, what's your cab's situation regarding air control? Got any fans blowing? Extraction etc?

@SOG- damn, that is one hell of a cfl grow, definitely something to aspire to. Read through the first 10 or so pages of the defoilation thread, will read more later, but im probably gonna do a bit of plucking first :). Thanks a lot for stickin around and helpin me out, i know we got off to a kinda negative start, i appreciate the help

@Grassott- I have a pc fan, (not sure of its size to be honest) as an exhaust fan as well as a small bathroom fan blowing from the outside the intake just for a bit more circulation and to get the temps down (right around 80). I really am not a fan of my cab, i can admit that i definitely rushed the construction. My whole reason for starting growing was finances. I was sick of paying for bud, and didnt have the money to do so, so i threw together a cab real quick (a total of like 30 bucks spent). I am planning to after this harvest though definitely up my scale and try to get something perpetual in the works.

...btw, in case no-one has told you, while smoking the ganja is only rarely addictive, growing the ganja is highly addictive! ...lol, ...i know that sounds like bullshit but it isn't, if you keep doing this, the zen of tending to your garden will become more important to your emotional well-being than the consumption of your produce, ...it might take years, but it does happen, lol.

Anyway, what that means is that you WILL upgrade, you'll try many things along the way and while CFLs are a great way to enter this hobby of ours they have some inherent disadvantages that you should consider once you begin reaping the rewards of your efforts, ...so be prepared to invest some of that cash you'll be keeping in your pocket on some upgrades.

...which brings me to my point, lol, with common CFLs you have the disadvantages of an inefficient design AND a built in ballast so you end up with too little light for too much heat, not a good thing.

...now, I expect if you stick with this you'll eventually upgrade to HID lghting but a good intermediate step for you to consider might be PL-Ls which are just better designed CFLs with remote ballasts that are removed from the grow space so they run much cooler than common CFLs, plus, the design of the bulbs makes them WAY more efficient.

...here is a picture of 2 bulbs, 55watters, with the sockets and a Fulham, Workhorse8 ballast which is rated at 220watts so able to run 4 of those 55s. (only 1 socket per bulb so the third is an extra)
picture.php

...and here is a crappy shot of my own clone factory where I originally had one 55watter up top above my rooting cuts and three 55s down below generating light for newly rooted clones as well as heat to warm the rooting cuts, ...as it turned out the bulb up top was too close to the cuts so cooked them in the summer and fortunately for me, removing that bulb removed the heat so no more cooking while the reflected light has proven to be more than sufficient to promote rooting.

...and here is a shot of the ballast in back so you can see how simple these are to work with.
picture.php

...if you're interested, there are close to 100 pics of the build-out in the thread linked in my sig, I put an addition on the back of that box that was fun figuring out, lol.

Anyway good luck man, ...and have fun, if it ain't fun, it ain't worth the bother.

Peace, SOG

Thanks a lot again SOG!!! As of now my intention is to go with a 150 watt HPS after i finish this go round, but i will definitely do some homework on those PL-Ls. Got my birthday and christmas coming up (yes im a youngen) so ill be banking that cash flow as well as the money i dont have to spend on meds, and ill be on my way to bigger and better buds!! I'll definitely be checking out the construction of of that cab as well

Hey, your cab's way better than what I had when I did my first crop 20 years ago so don't feel no shame! Also, when you get a bigger grow space, your current cab would be ideal for cuttings/perpetual.

Before you try and build a complicated cab, ask yourself these questions...
1. Are you any good at DIY/electrics? (If so, great. Just make sure the cab's big enough to grow bigger plants, then you can experiment on the de-leafing of bigger plants).
2. If you're renting would it be wise to build a cab, risking a landlord's visit? (security's the most important thing when growing. My son's just learnt that the hard way!).
3. Have you checked out grow tents on ebay?

Grow tents are easier to take down/put up if need be. Also, when you move out of your place, tents are easier to handle. A 3ft x 3ft tent may cost you in the region of say $70, maybe cheaper if you can get a second hand one, then you can grow bigger plants = bigger yields. So if you got any xmas money coming your way, it's something to consider.

my plans for the box i have now are either for cloning, or running a micro scrog, inspired by BLYNX and his amazing 1sq ft scrog. I have looked a bit into tents but nothing to in depth. I was looking at this light because of the remote balast, so that i can keep temperatures controlled easier, what do you think/ do you have any recommendations for a 150 watt hps? http://www.htgsupply.com/Product-HTGSupply-150-watt-High-Pressure-Sodium-Grow-Light.asp. I really am not good with electronics which i think was my downfall first time around, wish my lights were mounted a bit better. But hey, theres always room for improvement, and security is a bit of an issue, but i am reapplying to become a patient again, (i had to withdrawal from my states program due to some outside issues), so by the time things are larger, it will all be done within the confines of the law

You're welcome man, and don't sweat the negative stuff, in every conflict some of the fault belongs to each so i'm sorry too for my part in our starting off on the wrong foot, ...all we can ever do is struggle to accept our part and strive to not repeat the same behaviors.

...anyway, heres a few shots of some of my CFL nugs and while they were definately smaller and fewer than I currently grow under HID, they were not airy and fluffy, they were tasty, high-grade ganja.

...and heres a shot of my first HID rig, 2x 150watt HPS remoted into a DIY cooltube, ghetto reflector in place, lol. ...on a tight budget you have to find ways to adapt until your savings provide the funding for proper equipment.

...and heres a shot of the DIY ballasts from the back of the cab.

Hope you don't mind all the pics bro, if you do just let me know and i'll pull them.

Peace, SOG

@grass- ive been browsing ebay here for a minute, and unfortunately i cant really find a tent that would fit the space that i have. The space that i can really dedicate is only about 4 ft wide X 20 inches deep X 4 ft high. If you happen to come across anything that you think would fit let me know! And i have actually read through dundee's thread a few times, its definitely a good reference to have

@SOG- damn, again some hella nice buds and a nice looking cab you have there. Im definitely going to put a lot more planning into the next run, this time around i said f it to planning and put all of my faith into this site and improvisation lol. But i definitely dont mind the pics, gives me something to look at, and maybe it'll help to pull some more people in here :)
