Penn State Scandal and the end of Joe Paterno

Well said JJ! The pedo was first noticed when in 50's it don't happen overnight. Wonder how many others will come out. He should just kill himself. "Short eyes" have fun in prison maybe that would be best.

Can I start my articulated position with 'whatever'?

Just what was known, when and by whom,is purely speculation and conjecture...despite the timelines (and Herman's mistresses) that CNN likes to parade around as 'news'

There's a big difference between sworn testimony in front of a grand jury, and "speculation and conjecture". You can find the grand jury testimony online and read it yourself if you're really interested.

I have read it {here} which is why I made the comment.People jumping to conclusions without finding of the facts, not surprising with all the 'free thinkers' around this joint.

More specifically my comment was directed at Paterno's complicity, or lack thereof.I believe he followed a protocol to an assumed end, incorrectly on his part....doesn't make him a molester as has been implied.

It's been mishandled from the very start by the entire administration at PSU.

I suggest some others give a looksee, that way they can at least give the appearance that they're informed.

Irony abounds when some folks actually come out in defense of Michael Jackson.Sell millions of albums and it's OK to sleep with children.

Just an observation.

IMO anyone who knew about this and did not report it to the Pennsylvania State Police deserves to get fired.

McQueary is nothing but a coward. At 28 years of age he should have intervened on the boys behalf or called the PSP instead of "calling Daddy".

Paterno. Total douchebag and totally epitomizes the reason why I dislike sports. Cares about nothing but "winning" and his stupid team. When he realized that nothing was happening legally to Sandusky after reporting it to his superiors he should have gone to the PSP himself, instead of he chose to protect the school, his team, and his record. I hope people sue the shit out of him and he winds up penniless and panhandling.

The truly ironic thing is that if the State Police had been notified by Paterno back in 1998 or 2002, (or whenever this was first known), it would have been a scandal, but much less of one than it currently is, Paterno would have been looked on favorably for exposing a pedophile, and the school would have recovered from the scandal by now.

I find it utterly amazing that so many people could have known about this yet did nothing.

i read about 15 pages of of grand jury report, by that time it was clear to me anyone who knew about this and did not go directly to the police is guilty.

McQueary, his Dad, Paterno, the AD, the President and others..

however, as with anything something appeared to be lost in translation. at which point did the discussion turn from anal rape to 'horsing around' ?

i believe it's a crime not to report a crime,is it not? please correct me if i am wrong....

Grand Jury link for those who haven't read it yet. Words can't even describe Sandusky. He makes those guys on 'to catch a predator' look like kindergarteners. Just sick. He gave these young boys gifts... had them stay over his house... made them feel guilty about showering at a distance from him in the locker room... and he did it over and over again.

Wonder why nobody spoke up? When money and jobs are on the line, people act funny. There it is.

There's nothing he can say for himself. Remorse? He's sorry? He repeatedly engaged in sexual behavior with boys. Obviously he didn't see what he was doing was wrong, or didn't care.

460 years in jail? That would be kind. People like him deserve one in the back of the head. Makes my blood boil.

It's a misdemeanor not to, for those required by state law to report child abuse/molestation.

Pennsylvania law says that school employees "who, in the course of the employment, occupation or practice of their profession, come into contact with children" are supposed to report suspected abuse. Bev Mackereth of Pennsylvania's Office of Children, Youth and Families declined to comment on whether that would cover the Penn State officials embroiled in the scandal.
Professionals Required to Report
Cons. Stat. Tit. 23, § 6311

Persons required to report include, but are not limited to:

-Licensed physicians, osteopaths, medical examiners, coroners, funeral directors, dentists, optometrists,
chiropractors, podiatrists, interns, nurses, or hospital personnel
-Christian Science practitioners or members of the clergy
-School administrators, teachers, school nurses, social services workers, daycare center workers, or any other child
care or foster care workers
-Mental health professionals
-Peace officers or law enforcement officials

The police knew about it. The DA that would have prosecuted in 98 is now legally dead. He has been missing since 2005? laptop with destroyed hardrive found in the river.

to those that would say Paterno did what he needed to do, I would say you are very wrong and need to reconsider what truly defines a leader. Joe Paterno knows he did not do enough, he said as much in one of his statements. I am sure it was a difficult situation for him at the time, and when you fail, at some point down the road in a leadership position you may be held accountable.

Couldn't agree more...

Very sad what people get away with just because they are sports figures.

The defense of these scum, only because they're good at playing a fukin game, is very sad as well.

Everyone involved should not only be fired but charged as what they really are and that is sicko perverts.

The lowest form of human life is anyone for any reason sexually abusing children. Burn in hell each and everyone of you.

if paterno or the guy who witnessed what was going on in the shower had actually acted on what they saw or heard, we would be watching them get lynched for that too.

i can hear the DA explaining to the jury that even though what they saw was morally wrong it was their duty to report it and not take the law into their own hands

damned if ya do and damned if ya don't ........ right?

all the cards aint on the table yet , but i don't think its fair to say this whole thing rests on paterno's shoulders

Joe Pa will get scapegoated just because he is the face of Penn State. This is an institutional failure IMO. It reminds me of that documentary Conspiracy of Silence.

At the moment I feel Joe Pa did the least he could do just as everyone else involved in this did. It's obvious they were protecting the program to the best of their ability. He did the bar minimum that protocol asked for and it was all swept under the table.

Apparently this was a well known dirty secret within the football community. That blows me away.

I'm with JJ on this. The fact that he continued to be affiliated with Sandusky in anyway after the 1998 incident is enough for me to lose respect for him. How can you even talk to a child rapist?

Sandusky has what's coming to him when he goes to the pokie.

Let's at least be clear about Paterno--AFTER he received the report of Sandusky showering with 2 boys in 1998, and AFTER he received the report of Sandusky raping a 10-year-old in the shower in 2002, Sandusky was still allowed to travel with the team with young boys STAYING IN HIS HOTEL ROOM. There's no way on this earth that Paterno didn't know Sandusky was sexually abusing kids. Paterno flat-out allowed it to happen. Can the PSU faithful please stop idolizing this criminal? When the full truth comes out he will be known forever as the lowest form of humanity.
