pen that detects cannabis?

i was just at my granddads house and he asked me if i saw the big grow house bust on the local news, i had not. he said they described it as the most sophisticated seen yet...i asked how they got caught, and he said they used this small pen like thing in the street, and when it detected cannabis, it would glow. i wanted to say no way, but who knows.
has anyone heard of such a thing. grow houses are a huge problem in my state so if there is anything like this available, the authorities would have it.

well in my state they need a warrant to use flir, so hopefully that is it. that or high power use. he said the house was filled.

Maybe something that picks up on the noise from digital ballasts and illuminates from the frequency or something of that order? Just a thought.

I never heard of a glowing pen either but certainly they could be talking about a flir device as the house would likely have glowed on the screen of one so yeah let us know more if you find out :tiphat:

bullshit..surely there is something else out there in the internets...lets see here..gimme a second...

..
...
ok..I say bullshit or someone is just honestly mistaken or confused, or the turd cop really did say that just to see if it would be believed or as disinformation...probably the latter..

well my grandfather may have been confused. i asked him more about it today, he said it was a small pen(like the size of a diabetes pen) they used from the street and it glowed when it detected marijuana. i was thinking flir or power consumption myself, but who knows.
i really have no idea as i can't find the report he was talking about.

They have pens that can test for a substance, I found that while looking for this, like to test some unknown substance on the scene, or whatever, and it was pen like w/ a light, but nothing like a handheld flir pen marijuana buster detector..

the cable companies use RF detectors to see if a house has high radio frequencies from ballasts as SOTF stated.....you would have had to of fucked up somewhere else though for this to be enough for them to bust you...

Maj Pothead is correct. Leo here has admitted in 2 newspaper articles that they do use flir to find grow houses. The officer, while talking about an outdoor bust they made flat out stated that "these type of grows are harder to find because the officer has to lay eyes on them whereas we use infrared scans in the valley to find them." The guy actually stated that they are illegally using flir to find and bust grow houses. Guess if you are the law you can break the law while enforcing the law against those who break the law. Figure that one out.

I know the EPA has devices that can detect contaminants in the water. We had these devices in the sewer line where I worked to prevent people dumping illegal wastes down the drain.. If someone dumped something very acidic/Caustic it would set it off.

You are right about the rf detectors, but it is to detect rf leaks in the cable lines. But it will detect any rf leak such as from a poorly insulated e ballast. Just about any loose cable connector or squirrel chews in the cable line going from the street to the house or even a cable that has been nicked with a weedeater can cause an rf leak. Rfleaks can cause interference with cable modems. That was the main reason we used to check for rf leaks, not to bust people for growing. But there was always those dick coworkers who were just assholes and wouldn't hesitate on calling the law for any illegal activity.

Just my 2cents.

I've never heard of a pen detector but I have seen them use similar devices to detect drugs at airports but they have to rub the 'pen' against material first,

I don't know if any of you are aware of what the Dutch have developed, they have got a 'drug sniffer' that is extremely sensitive, they have attached it to a helicopter/UAV with FLIR to detect grow houses, how effective it is? I don't know.

Here's a news article and video of it in action.

"A helicopter that can sniff out cannabis is flying over the skies of the Netherlands.

The device, which has been nicknamed the Canna Chopper, has both odour and video sensors, which allow it to find fields of cannabis from the air. According to Gizmodo, the device is remote controlled, powered by petrol and able to stay in the air for hours.

The helicopter is being deployed in an area called De Achterhoek, in the east of the country, where the Dutch Daily News reports that it found a cannabis factory and a cannabis farm. The website adds that seven suspects were arrested and several kilos of hemp were intercepted.

The helicopter was built for the Dutch Organised Crime Task Force. Anton de Ronde from the North Gelderland police force says: "The Canna Chopper is a small chopper without a pilot. It is a new invention for, and partly invented by, the Dutch police. We already had a special torch that can 'smell' henna plants, as well as normal cameras that can see warm spots. These last cameras are also used by the fire brigade. We put these on board the helicopter which uses GPS to navigate itelf and is controlled by one person on the ground."

De Ronde says that the Canna Chopper costs one tenth of the price of a full-sized helicopter. he adds: "The Canna Chopper we are using now is a test chopper and we want to try it out to see if it achieves what we need it to. At the end of the year we will take the decision, whether or not to deploy them."

The Dutch Daily News says that its implementation has been applauded by police authorities in Germany, the country for which “most of the illicit cannabis and hashish produced in the Netherlands is actually destined.”

The news site adds that profits from the cultivation of cannabis were estimated to have reached over €2 billion (£1.75 billion) in 2008, and says that only about 10 per cent of this crop is sold legally in Holland. Exporting the drug is illegal."
