I live in SoCal and love living here but as far as it being a tourist destination I think it can be boring. I think it's too ambiguous as far as just showing up and finding a ton of things to do i.e. it would be better if you had a planned itinerary. SoCal can mean Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and all of these have a different vibe/attractions.

I'm not really a big fan of Vegas because I don't like gambling too much but there are other things to do and plenty to drink. I like getting out of the city and hiking in the desert, stuff like that.

I've never been to New Orleans but from reading this thread it sounds like it would probably be a cool place to go. :)

San Francisco is a great town to visit. Great nightlife, good city transportation, lots of sight seeing if you have never been before and the chicks can be very hot. Plus you can pop over to Oakland or Berkley for a bit.

hm yeah maybe..i went wrong in SF.... met 2 mexicans at the airport ended up in santa clara stayed for some slutty home partys(one of the guys i knew fom europe and he told me some of the guys we had met made money from sending people too jail anyway possible .. planting coke etc..fuck that scenario :D later that day I am off to a hotel downtown for next 10 days, and the first day I got a stripclub recomended to me...man it was shit..ugly bitches and high entrance fee,no alcohol, almost impossible too get sex!?open only until 02.00

loved the shopping so cheap everything food&drinks, clothes ,cool surveillence james bond shit, all electronics... t.y low dollars :D ..nice too see fisherman dwarf ,alcatraz, golden gate, and the foreign girls at cold stone...plus them 2 guys working at my hotel was cool :D hottest 1-6girls around SF was from my own country:gday:

I VOTE NYC OR MIAMI IF YOU LIKE IT HOT.

nightlife is shit from own expriences plus what ive heard ,but i will visit SF again and try again oaksterdam maybe:dance013:

I can't deny that the east coast has amazing cities with lots of history and the midwest is full of friendly, welcoming people. But if you're at all interested in any sort of sight-seeing or outdoor activities, come out west!!! you won't regret it

24/7 party you want to go to Vegas. Then drive on over to Southern Cal, SanDiego way. you get to party see the desert and spend time in Cali.

Don't miss Red Rocks Canyon in Vegas.

also to the cats that said Philly is a shithole....you ain't spent any real time there have you? Same thing could be said about every large East Coast city. Atlantic City on the other hand, now that is a real shit hole.

have fun on your trip

peace

You would barely notice other Brits in Vegas unless you go when there's a Ricky Hatton fight on or something. It's everything you asked for there really.. party central... and you will almost certainly pull some hot American chicks.

My biggest piece of advice is to stay in hostels wherever you go, you will meet loads of solo travelers like yourself and have a great time partying.

Hotels are designed to keep people separated. Hostels are designed to put people together. Don't know about American Hostels but those in Europe were DAMN cheap (30 years ago anyway) leaving cash for extracurricular activities.

I've always thought of hostels as slumming it but they sound a laugh, do I have to kip in a room full of other people snoring and farting though? Sod that!

Depends on the Hostel. I had private rooms in several Scandinavian countries where Hostels were in University dorms. Either way, you'd probably be too exhausted to care. Hostels toss you out at 8am and don't let you back in until 6pm. Neither rain nor sleet nor flaming comets from the sky will open those doors early. After roaming the city or country for 10 hours (often with a 40 lb pack) you'll fall asleep before your head hits the pillow.

My first night in Merry Old England, I hooked up with a doctor from Philadelphia, a carpenter from South Africa, couple of German kids on holiday before conscription, A young girl from Ohio joining the Royal Shakespeare academy, all in 15 minutes in the common room. Then we went out and really met people. Much trouble and fun was had throughout the land.

Depends on the time of year...If its now in winter and you don't like winter sports then I'd stay south. Miami or New Orleans would be my choices. Both are touristy but that's probably what you are after.

Boston is a great town, lots of colleges and its affordable compared to NYC. It draws a lot of the Northern New Englanders that want to party. Plus its got lots of daytime stuff to do. I would just avoid it during winter if you are making this your vacation - lots of cold and white stuff.

Midwest - Chicago hands down. Im from StL which is just south of it a couple of hours and I would chose Chi town hands down. StL is a great party town - if you know people. For a foreigner you wouldn't have such a great time and would probably not even find the good spots as they are scattered about over a wide geographic area. Chicago has lots of night life clustered downtown and people are very friendly. You can get a decent room nearby and walk or take a cab. Minneapolis did not impress me at all.

NYC is cool, just bring lots of $$$.

Key West would be my first choice. It's not a big city, just a beautiful island built around drinking and partying. Just be careful buying or smoking pot there. Florida doesn't have the most cannabis friendly laws.

San Francisco is fun too, as is Vegas (if you want to gamble and see shows). Vegas seems like a great place to meet girls; the casinos are full of hot drunk girls in town to have a good time.
