An englishman visiting America alone

Hello all after spending the last two years working on various projects I've decided it's time to get out of the growroom and pay you guys a visit.

Ideally I'd like to go somewhere with a good nightlife where I can go out alone and meet some people, I'm not looking for a stoner vibe I want to have a good old drink and party. Would people in the us find it strange to encounter a random foreigner out on the piss alone or would it be fine to just mingle on in? Can anyone reccomed any decent cities to visit? I'm thinking about la or maybe San fransisco. NYC doesn't really appeal as it sounds too much like London (unfriendly) and Vegas I'd imagine is full of English people on stag do's.

Help me my American cousins! :)

I can't agree with Chicago, bunch of FIBs, but +1 for the midwest. If you want to have a good time drinking with a bunch of people who will accept you regardless, you can't go wrong with the midwest. Unless you can't hold your liquor, then it could be a rough ride :)

I really only know the upper midwest, so take that into account. Though, I would say the farther north you go the more liquor is consumed, so take that into account also.

If you are in your early 20s, I would think about a college town. Minneapolis, Madison, or Ann Arbor would all be crazy. Minneapolis would have the tamest night life, but the most to do during the day. Milwaukee isn't a big college town, but it is a big drinking town.

I talk shit about Illinois, but Chicago would be a good time. Its just so big I don't like going there too much. Traffic+too many people= no fun to me.

your english accent will be your best friend here. americans can be pretty hard on each other, but IME we tend to treat guests pretty well. can't recommend any cities (i hate crowds) but we got lots of nice country to see around denver

love the PNW, its a bit too chill for a londonite mebe? the town i live in is known as the "city of subdued excitement" but our herbs are the kindest anywhere (ya cali, i am takin to you!)
seattle or portland are great. if you end up in WA, let me know.

OP in order for people to recommend good places I think we need some more specifics about you and what your looking for. How old are you? Your traveling alone but are single/married. Actively seeking some strange? How long are u traveling for? How much money do you have to spend? Besides drinking and partying what are you looking to do? (You can drink and party in almost every city in the US and they'll all be a blast, provided you got cash)

New Orleans. The wrong areas are pretty damn rough, but its a relatively inexpensive place, and one of the friendliest in the country.

We are pretty much known (aside from mardi gras, and katrina) for the nightlife where the bars never close. Spicy southern food, and sluts. It's a big drinking town

If you don't like to get drunk, eat too much spicy seafood, and chat up bar sluts then New Orleans isn't the place for you.

Its kinda the Tijuana of the South. The south is very repressed and rednecky, and New Orleans is the place people go to let loose. For instance New Orleans is full of homosexuals who left small backwards towns to come to a place that is more tolerant.

Its odd how different we are from the rest of the south. After a few hundred miles outside the city, when you tell people you are from New Orleans they look at you like you said you are from Gommorah.

Wow thanks all for all the detailed replies! Will be going for about two weeks, will be taking a few grand so ain't exactly travelling on a budget but am not into the sort of places where everyone drinks champagne from the bottle. Am 30 but look young and am young at heart so can defo handle student towns.if there's any places in the US where US citizens take their vacations that'd be cool cos then it's more likely to be happening 7 days a week rather than just weekends. I like anything from cheesy bars with happy hours playing pop music to dingy dark house clubs open til 9am
