black buckets vs orange HD bucket

Just wondering if its worth the addtional $6 pr bucket going with the black 'food' grade bucket at my local hydro store vs buying some cheap Home Depot Orange buckets for a couple bucks? A buddy swears by the orange bucket and says he's never done anything (as in wrapping them in foil) and has never had a problem with the roots? Thoughts?

Get the cheap paint buckets the man suggested. Used saved money to buy Reflectix. Good for hydro or soil.

Doesn't Lowe's carry a silver-gray bucket? That heavy metallic pigment might prevent transmission of light better than the orange Home Depot buckets. Light is better for growing algae than for growing roots.

I have been thinking of ways to block the light from coming in the white buckets that I got my hands on for super cheap(free from work and they are square+plus food grade). I have decided to get a roll of black garbage bags and cut a hole in the bottom for the plant, and drape the rest over the bucket to block the light for coming in the top or the sides.

just get some black spray paint from hd if ur that concerned. i got a bunch of 1 qt clear plastic containers from the dollar store and spray painted them. works fine and is easy. i use them for in between clone and 2 or 3 gallon containers.

These have been used...

One just painted as much as can be painted with a ROLLER(20 buckets fully completely is about an hour of work)

2 coats of FLAT BLACK...
2 coats of FLAT WHITE...

BAM.. one believes that if say 90% of the buckets are light proof... thats plent
enough with ones experience.

EDIT>>> One would make sure to use sand paper to scratch the surface of the buckets,
this makes sure the paint has something to grab/stick onto.

Walmart's got a new5 gal. logo-ed dark blue bucket for 2 bucks.....
and don't forget the reusable shopping bags also hold 5 gal of soil......
and there .99 cent's

Reflectix or similar is best for blocking LIGHT and HEAT from buckets!

The hydroshop black buckets are $10.oo a piece where I live and I was suckered in..buy anywhere else and any color!

If I could find clear see through buckets at a reasonable price I would buy them!
