How many acres is enough?

I think that 1 acre that is cleared with good soil can yield you more than 50 lbs for sure.
Waaaay more than that! Plant count is kind of irrelevant meaning do you want 25 1 lb plants or 25 10 lb plants? It comes down to canopy area regarding total production. Numbers are important to comply with local guidelines and some counties have canopy size restrictions. In Mendocino county right now, from what I understand, it's 25 plants and no restrictions on individual plant size (yield), canopy area or parcel size. I only know some of what's cool in Cali and have no idea about Maine.

I spent my first 25 years in CT and know New England well enough that you can have it.

Back to the OP I'd say that about 5 acres would be a good start cause you also have to keep in mind the smell factor regardless of any tree/shrub coverage. The smell factor is also influenced by the strains grown but more importantly is the amount of canopy. Personally I'm going for 20 acres.
