I'd also like an explanation of how this clearly advanced fish-transportation technology appeared in a 1501 painting.

I find the carving on the temple in Abydos Egypt very interesting. What were they seeing in those acient times to be able to pretty much accurately do a carving of a helicopter, a plane type saucer looking thing, and something that looks like a modern day tank? Just google Abydos and view the images shown.

From the wiki article on Abydos...

"Some of the hieroglyphs carved over an arch on the site have been misinterpreted in esoteric mysticist and "ufological" circles as depicting modern technology.

Often described as a helicopter, a battle tank or submarine, and a fighterplane or even a U.F.O.. But this is partly based on widely distributed retouched images that removed key details from the carvings. When examining the original hieroglyphs the provocative images are commonly explained as being the result of erosion, and later adjustments, or re-writing over the original inscriptions that left parts of the older text visible creating the illusion of modern looking machines. "

And this site pretty well breaks it down visually -

~ "The Madonna with Saint Giovannino" ~
Above Mary's left shoulder is a shining, or glowing, disk shaped object. A man and his dog can clearly be seen looking up at the floating object in the composite below. Painted in the 15th century, Palazzo Vecchio lists the artist as unknown ~ although attributed to the Lippi school.

Upon closer inspection, the man seems to be looking away from the UFO, behind him and over his shoulder. Or, more likely, the notably out of place object may be imagined floating above the ground between them. From either perspective, could Mary be seen as blocking the two babies from the flying saucer's view? Perhaps the dog glimpses the hovering object ~ with it's mouth open, it could even be barking at it. But what is that dark, sparkling, disassembled figure beside them ~ a dwarf, or an ethereal being? A body, legs, head, and tail can be made out. Could this represent a type of alien, or demon? Also, Mary's halo seems a bit shadowy ~ more like a vaporous disc than a ring of light.

Have a look at that... Pretty well explains the iconography depicted in the painting which is just common religious stuff.

You'd think if there were really UFO's kicking it around back then, there would have been a straight up painting of them, not some tiny detail in the background of other works.

I don't count it out entirely, but given how easily these images can be explained by anybody with a proper education in art history, makes it pretty clear to me that UFOs are far from the most likely answer.

They used to think God lived up in the sky (and plenty still do hehe) so even without the art background, is it really a shocker that religious art from back in the day depicts some crazy shit going on in the clouds?

I guess one of the main arguments the conspiracy theorists have going is to say well how would they have described a spaceship back then when they didn't even know what a plane was...or an engine. So they say oh in Ezekial when he comes across that light it's a spaceship, they just didn't know what to call it. So they called it the fire cloud or something.
To this I would have to say well then they would have used a relevant wording to convey the extraterrestrial nature of the things. But then, back then, if they saw an alien, they would have thought it was a God. I mean that's like a given. They wouldn't have even understood the concept of an extraterrestrial until like the industrial age...right? So I don't know. Maybe the contacts between people and "God" in the different religious texts - bible, torah, koran...are actually documentation of alien contact? Then to this I would say where's the evidence? Didn't they leave behind any statues of themselves, or written texts or even computers or anything at all?
One other strange thing is with the native americans in the pacific northwest...they traditionally braced infants heads so when they matured would have elongated, alien like foreheads..because to them it's beautiful or customary. IS this in homage to aliens, who have well..alien heads? MAybe not. Idk.

could be the very reason none of us have any closeup images of those ships with all of our technology. a couple of the images from Yugoslavia have beings working controls.

but if it were true then it would make the most sense that they saw their gods descending from above.

can't be proved, can't be disproved at least until our govt stops lying to us.......
