Thanks for all the advice you guys. I hope to be breaking ground on this grow soon. Until then, see you guys around.

my last attempt was pathetic. bought great seeds, dug big holes and added compost. thinned the vine to one pumpkin. end of season that pumpkin wasnt even as big as a basketball. errrrrrrrrrr

thanks DD,the kids from church were so happy...they weighed 290-265-213-127-109.
my friend won elk grove and a state record with 1691.5,then two weeks later won half moon bay and re set the state record with 1704...I'm looking forward to next year,my goal is a 2000 lb mammoth--I've ammended a few acres for two years now,and seeds from champions...
Supermanlives--I had $100 seeds that didnt even pop,a friend paid 350 per seed and didnt pop...my first attempt a few years ago did just like yours, lots of work for a pumpkin smaller than the grocery stores...I learn more every year...
Giant pumpkin seed swap/auction in elk gove,ca. in the spring--over 4000 seeds last year.

Can someone suggest a trust worthy site that sells giant pumpkin seeds for less than 10$.

They don't have to be world record seeds, offspring from 500 pounds are so.

I want to get my feet wet before I shell out big bucks for world record level seeds.

If you can't post the seed company's name here, please PM me.

Peace.

I see this thread is from last year,I hope we can keep it going.
Heres a pic. of my attempt at a giant pumpkin from a couple years ago. Will be trying again this year.
Don Langavins books are very informative, worth the investment.
Good luck to all you pumpkin growers this year

To bury vines or not?

I see it recommended by experts.
But then the big yeilders, many tend to not do it.

What's your take?

Definitely bury the vines, all the big boys do it.
It helps to encourage roots to grow at the nodes and it keeps the wind from blowing them around and possibly breaking them.
I see in my pic that all the vines aren't buried but most of them are, I left the ends uncovered so I could move them around as the pumpkin grew.

Great thread! I've a package of Dill's Atlantic Giant, and a neighbor with 90 cows' worth of shit he doesn't mind me taking away. Gonna try for a big beauty this summer, but as it's my first pumpkin year I'd be happy with a hundred pounder :D.

very cool stuff Shack, wish I had the space for some gigantic pumpkins. I'll have to stick with some sugar pumpkins till I can afford a place with a real yard.

Hey Turtle, I started with 5 plants and am now down to 2., the others were culled due to disease. My biggest pumpkin is at 168 lbs. I'm a little worried as it should be gaining 10 to 20 lbs a day and its only putting on 5 to 10 lbs per day. I lost the cable I need to transfer pics from my camera to computer so I can't post pics. Gonna try to get that cable this weekend.
