C99 F3

So dig this. I'm rooting around in a box looking for something. My girlfriend is a neat freak and is constantly putting my shit into boxes, and I'm constantly digging in boxes looking for something. My storage system ain't perfect, but at least I know where to find shit, that is until she shoves it in a box somewhere.

OK, rant mode off, on to the actual subject. So I'm digging through this box and I find a package of C99 F3 beans I made several years ago. There are like 25 beans in the the pack. I grabbed a couple and sacrificed them by cracking them open to see if they are dry or possibly viable.

They may be viable from what I can tell. So I promptly put 4 into moist peat pellets. Over the next couple days I'm going to try a couple other germ methods with the rest in hopes of getting a couple to crack.

I had completely forgotten them and honestly thought I'd used and given away the last of them long ago.

It would be sweet to find enough viable plants to make some fresh seeds.

Do it up man, there has to be some gems in those beans. I am running some Powerhouse F2 right now (DC x C99) and the phenos are outrageous looking.

what was the original breeder you got the bean from? Did you do the F2 or did you get as a f2 and make the F3's? and how did you like C99?

I'd love to see how these turn out. The original C99 was the first named strain I grew, and 10 years later it's still my favorite. I'm currently running a couple packs of C99 F2's from Gypsy Nirvana. I'm optimistic I'll find some that are as good as the originals from Brothers Grimm. I'll be happy if I just find one keeper out of the group.

They were F2's of original Grimm stock made by Spice Bros. I did the F3 and used the selected male in several crosses that turned out to be killer. I was making a lot of crosses and juggling way too many projects, so it's no wonder I misplaced them.

I found straight C99 a bit too racy for my own taste, but I felt it made a killer parent plant. Always added extra punch and tric coverage, as well as shortening the flowering time a bit without stepping on the other parent too much. I used it on the male side, never tried using the female in crosses.

Put 4 of the remaining beans in paper towels and stuck them in a warm cozy place. Tonight I'll drop a few in a glass of water and see what happens. I've germed older beans than these successfully, so we'll see. I did a test germ before I misplaced them, so I know they were viable then.

Germination

Nice find, here's something i posted somewhere else, sounds weird but

I always scuff my seeds to help germination, but some are too hard shelled they wont crack. After 2 days if they are being stubborn like 3 of the ChemD x Coco kush, i crack them with my teeth, it works a charm. I used to use my finger nails but you end up crushing some of them. Just pop the seed in your mouth, get it in to position (end to end, not width ways if you can help it), bite slowly and you can feel it crack. Next day the tip is sticking out. Last seed run i had 6 Honey White that were stubborn before they got teethed and they all cracked and grew.

If that doesn't work get your oxy acetylene out

Anyways good luck

Dug up two that are in peat pellets. They are just now poking out tails the very tiniest bit. I guess I'm going to get at least a couple to pop.

One of the four in peat pellets is up. The other four in paper towels are starting to go fuzzy, so those are a wash. Looks like the peat is the way to go. I still have around 15 seeds, so I'm going to germ the rest in small lots.

The only one to pop so far is doing well in a 16 oz cup. It'll get a little fertilizer now that it has a couple sets of leaves. I've put a few more into peat pellets. If I can get a couple viable males and females I'm taking cuts this time and making a ton of beans

I've never grown F3 plants before. Do you think you'll see more variety compared to the originals? The original C99 was the most uniform strain I've grown. There were some differences in appearance and flowering times, but the potency and quality of the high were equally amazing among the plants.

How do you select a male if you have more than one? I've got a bunch of C99 F2 male clones that I don't know what to do with (I'm just starting to learn about breeding). Right now I figure I could take pollen from all the males and mix it together for long term storage, or I could somehow test the males for potency and just keep the pollen from the best 1 or 2.

Good luck, m8. I ran some C99 fem's from GN a couple of years ago. Really nice stuff. I'd like to see these turn out well for you.

The F2's were very uniform. I only had one male from a 10 pack, so he was it. Had I had more, I would have used pollen from all of them and then selected the best females. As it turned out, he was killer in other crosses, so it was dumb luck.

Hey WelderDan! I made hundreds of C99 f3 seeds from some SpiceBros plants years ago as well and just grew one. Pics are in the my thread in 'Indoor Grows - Soil'. I got a pineapple pheno and it is awesome. I'm sure you will have some nice plants out of your 25 beans.

Thanks, I'll check that out. Even if I only get the one plant out of the bunch, I'll still use use it, male or female. As uniform as the F2's were, I'll chance using it as a parent.

Testing the pollen from each male sounds like the best strategy, but it's not that realistic in my current situation. I have 10 males and 9 females out of the 2 packs I bought. I'm going to select the best one or two females, obviously. I could then pollinate clones of the best female with each male individually, ending up with 10 batches of seeds. Then I'd have to grow out those 10 batches and figure out which batch is best overall.

That would work, but that sounds exhausting. I don't have the time or space for such an ambitious project right now. I have tons of respect for the breeders who actually do that sort of thing, though. If I tried that myself with my current setup, I'd be busy for a few years. I also wouldn't have space to try new strains. C99 is my favorite of all time, but I want more. Like Tiger Woods says, it's all about the variety.
