48 or 72 hrs dark?

In this months high times, there is a question and answer area with Ed Rosenthal. He mentions a study done in the 70's by a Dr Carlton. He found THC levels at the highest just before dawn. Rosenthal surmises that 24-36 period of darkness would increase the THC levels more than 12 hours. I just try and harvest mine an hour or two before the lights come on. I am already using two rooms.. I cant afford a dark room also.

for sure i wouldn't set up a room for it or anything, more just a cool little trick to try if you have a chance and its easy for your set up.

Time2Unite: I am not convinced but I can't deny you have some good points. :)

If people feel like leaving the lights off for a day or two, one thing I am sure about is that it certainly won't harm the plants. Everyone's got their growing habits and tricks, and as long as the grower is satisfied with his/her final product, everything's cool in my opinion.

Keep it safe people. Peace

i believe short-day plants mobilize starch during night, harvesting at the end of the dark cycle prevents starches from being left in the bud....would this affect the smoke?

i have tried the end-of-flowering darkness in dwc and soilless mixes, with different clones, different lengths of time (24-72+ hours).....never noticed the slightest difference...it seems the plant is dormant although still transpiring moisture. i've checked with a dope scope before and after and noticed no changes in the trichs.

maybe it involves genetics? temperature? more than we know, ......just a thought

so many people know of this and have tried it, i'm not the only one who thinks it's BS......

good info, i'd like to read more on that.

What about yield

What about yield

At the advanced forum people would swear by this trick, but they did it to increase yield. The thought being that the 48 or 72 hours of dark stressed the plant into moving oils and sugars (not just moisture) from the stems into the buds. You are supposed to leave them in the dark until the main stalk bends with a good shake. The stems will be hollow when you harvest. Supposedly increases yeild by like 10 to 20 percent.

I agree with T2U on the possibility of it being strain-specific. (I'll let you know if I find a strain ;-)

As far as what TR4K says about yield, I dunno, some of my strains always have hollow stems.

I have some "personal connections" to Dr. Paul Mahlberg, who has studied this extensively. Let me see if I can't get the man's take on it.

I've done this before a few times but not sure what the difference was since I didnt do a side by side comparison (clones from same mother and one in dark period, one on regular 12/12) so I cant say conclusively that it helps but I dont think it hurts...

I belive it works on indoor sativas finishing up maturing at the end of a cycle, amber ratios change a bit and ive noticed a better finished product. The plants on the verge of dying and its totally finished. I do get hollowed stalks too.

They don't get 48 or 72 hrs darkness naturally so why change things?
