Too bad there's no muskys around here in Europe, but I'm enthuastic pike fisherman :)
Can you believe it that just 2 weeks ago I was walking home stoned after smoking some good himalayan gold and it was -22 ºF and I'm gonna start my open water fishing season just aprox. 1 month from this on?? I wish I could come to states fishing muskys n taste sum of those buds of yours. My record pike was +44 inches CR :)

I've done some musky fishing. But I'm a fair weather fisherman so I really haven't been at the best times. Hence, the ones I've caught have been small. Got a lot of big pikes though.

used to have them in a lake near here, but they never successfully spawned, & the state quit stocking them. hooked a couple of larger ones, but never landed one. biggest was a 17"er i landed while crappie fishing with 4# test line, LOL! loved to see the bigger ones boil up & hammer a top water plug or spinner...

yes, "baby" is right! saw them over 40# caught out of lake, helped a fellow land one near 20#. hooked several that were a LOT bigger than 17", LOL! when the shad balled up on surface in the fall, you could see the damn things hanging around the schools. getting them to hit was not that difficult, keeping them hooked up was a bitch... My friend is a big muskie fisherman. His record is 51 inches. He's going for the elusive 60 incher. Says he seen one following that, when it went under the boat, the head came out the one side of the boat before the tail disappeared on the other. I rarely go with him because to catch these monsters you need to be fishing in October/November, sometimes with ice on the water. Not for me.

I get in to Musky from time to time on big spinners, caught a few on a surface lure. Caught one on a #4 Grasshopper imitation fly-fishing in Minnesota about 10 years back . . .

I just posted in the other fishing thread. Muskies are the only thing I fish for anymore. We pull mid and upper 40 inch out of the Madison chain every year. I have tons of pics but don't know how to black out my face in the photos. I posted a release photo in the other thread. I guess I'll put it up here too. We smoke heavy and fish hard, in complete darkness. There is just too much fishing pressure in town so the fish have learned to eat late at night. This release pic is of a 46.25 caught in town last year('09). I caught and released one more that night and lost another boat side. 3-5 fish nights are not uncommon for us. My fishing buddy has some amazing connections with the locals pros. Also the Madison chain has been very underrated for Muskies in the past. People are catching on as the Professional Muskie Tournament Trail World Championship was held here last fall. Several 50"+ fish were caught and released last year on Monona and Waubesa(not by me).

Leech Lk, Walker MN muskie capitol of the world, it's a huge
lake w/over 200 miles of shoreline in the Chippewa National
Forest.

The below info courtesy of the Leech Lk Chamber of Commerce

Leech Lake is the third largest lake in Minnesota – it covers 111,527 acres, has 230 miles of shoreline and reaches a maximum depth of 150 feet, although over 80% of the lake is less than 35 feet deep. On the shores of Leech Lake are the towns of Walker, Federal Dam, Onigum, and Whipholt. Several rivers feed into the lake, such as the Shingobee, Kabekona, Steamboat, Sucker and Boy, while the only major outlet is the Leech River. The lake is surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest and features many large and diverse bays. Most of Leech Lake also lies within the boundaries of the Leech Lake Indian Reservation.

Walleyes: They continue to be the most sought after fish on Leech Lake and after several years of extensive stocking and management practices, the fishery is presently at peak levels with strong populations of fish from 13 inches to over 25 inches. The lake has a 4-fish limit with a protected slot of 18" to 26", which assures protection for the large fish as well as providing for limits of eating-size fish.

Northern Pike: This exciting fish will put up a big fight and is always fun to catch. They are located throughout the lake and are typically willing to bite. They are the "bread-n-butter" fast-action fish for many anglers.

Muskie: Leech Lake was crowned the "Muskie Capital of the World" after the famous muskie rampage during a hot spell in July 1955. Due to a strong catch and release ethic, the lake now actually produces more big fish over 50 inches than it ever has. Break out the big baits and don't forget your camera! We can hardly wait to hear your muskie story!

I know several friends that travel many miles to get there muskie fishing, there seems to be a huge bite on the lake again and very strong catch & release practices have kept the numbers very high.

Camp in the Chippewa Natl Forest on Stoney Point, see you there.

Minnesota is pumping out far more 50" fish than Wisconsin but I still feel lucky to have 2 excellent lakes for muskies within 20 minutes of my home. Leach lake does not seem to be as hot as many others up there in Minnesota from what I here. I haven't been up there yet but I'm hearing of a couple other large lakes that the word is are much hotter than Leach Lake. Mille Lacs was the hot lake 3-4 years ago in Minnesota but my fishing buddy keeps talking about another two lakes in Minnesota that I'm not supposed to even talk about. Leach Lake is surely still better than my home waters though. The local DNR did stock the Leach Lake strain Muskie here for the last 3-4 years. They are supposed to grow a little faster and larger than the Wisconsin strain. The Minnesota Muskies have dark spots and the Wisconsin Muskies have dark vertical bars, with some exceptions.

I am just about to renew musky hunter mag. I have not been out in a couple years but plan on a few weeks this year. I probably will hit lake geneva for some pike and bass also. I can walk to the lake from my moms house when i visit her and I take the dog and we both get baked. I like to hit the walls of lake michigan for perch but nothing beats muskies up in the north woods. I have spent so many childhood summers up there with my grandparents fishing lakes up there. I caught a lot on ballard lake connected to irving and white birch. The biggest used to be in white birch.

A few of the guys that write for Musky Hunter magazine live here in southern Wi and fish the Madison chain. A couple other more well known locals here write for Esox Angler magazine. The guys writing for the mags are the only muskie fisherman we know that don't smoke tuff while fishing, as far as we know. Half the best handmade muskie lures we use are made right here in town. Lee Lures, Big Joes, Figure 8 tackle, and BS Willy baits are a few of the locally handmade baits we use. I highly recommend the Figure 8 "Big Mama" in place of a "Cowgirl" when the fish are chasing blades. The release pic I posted earlier was one of my many fish caught on the "Big Mama" made in Pardeeville Wi.

I fished all my life wherever I've lived. Fished for Muskies in Western NY in Lake Chataqua down in the Southern Tier, caught many but nothing to brag about. I live in S Cal. now and go after bass, catfish, striped bass and trout. I fish DVL., Lake Perris and Silverwood Lake. I'm always looking for a person to partner up with who lives to fish and doesn't mind helping me out with launching and trailering my boat. Jon 54 :wave::tiphat::tiphat:
