Silencing exhaust system...

I've got to get my extraction system as quiet as possible.

Got a 1000m3 (588cfm) exhaust and 680m3 (400cfm) intake rigged to a thermostatic speed controller.

I'm gonna box up the fans and have got some acoustic duct to help with the woosh.

Was thinking of using polystyrene loft insulation sheets for the boxes as it's cheap and easy to work with. Sealed with a few zip ties... But was wonder if its better to use a sound damping material, or just stuff the box with loft insulation the itchy rockwool looking bastard stuff :D

Also, how much insulation would be needed? I was thinking with 2" on top, bottom and each side of fan, plus fill in space if using loft insulation.... Is this enough? I would like to keep the boxes fairly small...

Was thinking about a muffler for intake and exhaust too... anybody have experience with these? Any good??

I'm gonna do a lil D.I.Y when I get em done as there doesn't seem to be many around these days.

:tiphat:

why not buy a duct silencer.they aint that expensive. i would be interested what you come up with . i am ready to buy a few but if i can diy it i might give it a go.mine were 90$ for 6 inch and supposed to reduce noise by 15 decibels

W'sup supermanlives... I'm thinking about some siliencers/ mufflers but not sure if they are any good or not.

I meant I'll be showing how to throw a quick acoustic box for the fans together using cheap stuff, it reads like I'm gonna DIY the muffler above. Although I seen a couple threads on DIY mufflers looks like a PITA to do without tools and space.

W'sup Sgt. Stendenko... That's the type of sound dampening material I was talking about... I was wondering if it would be better to use that stuff in place of this type of loft insulation for inside the box:

Cheers for the muffler pointers!

If you're handy and have some time there is a DIY tutoral on this muffler somewhere on icmag. I made one and the results were almost 50% reduction in wind rush noise. I installed my exhaust system in a wall plenum, also the fan is inside an insulated wood box. Its virtually silent.

1x 6" hard duct
1x 4" to 6" reducer
2x 4" starter collar
4' by 4' (or 4' by 6') Machine Cloth (Mesh)
Polyfill batting (like in pillows or stuffed animals)
Steel Tape

My dimensions should read 6" DIA and 36" long.

Nice work mate, so I would need a muffler that was 5' long as my exhaust is 10" Damn! Lol! Not so sure I can fit that in the space for fans along with boxes and acoustic ducting. The growshop ones are like half that size I think...

I recommend to everybody that needs a muffler to make their own Diy duct muffler. I purchased an 8" one for about $100. When I opened the box I was disapointed to see how easy and cheaper it would have been to make one myself.

Just my 2 cents.

I have an insulated box surrounding my fan (I used carpet padding I had lying around), insulated ducting, and a diy muffler. Mufflers are fairly easy to make. I'd recommend building your own - very easy and very effective.

I've just seen a flexible muffler that would work very well for my needs.... if I can make one easily I probably will.... Cheers MTRUM75

@vecker how much would you say boxing up the fan + using acoustic ducting reduced the noise by?

Also how much did the muffler further reduce it by and was it mostly air wooshing sounds the muffler contends with?

@ijim, 2 big spliffs of what your smoking please :D :joint:
