QWISO Questions

GK,
I believe you are talking about hardware store denatured ethanol. What was used to denature it? They tend to use chemicals that are difficult to extract from the alcohol in order to prevent people from drinking it.

Bump, am I okay with the SLX?

I personally wouldn't use SLX and always check the MSDS on any of my selections.

A review of the SLX MSDS shows that it contains Methyl Isobutyl Keytone, in addition to the Ethanol and Methanol.

Not a good thing. There is some MSDS information for Methyl Isobutyl Keytone:

Routes of Entry: Dermal contact. Eye contact. Inhalation. Ingestion.

Toxicity to Animals:

WARNING: THE LC50 VALUES HEREUNDER ARE ESTIMATED ON THE BASIS OF A 4-HOUR EXPOSURE.
Acute oral
toxicity (LD50): 1600 mg/kg [Guinea pig]. Acute dermal toxicity (LD50): 20001 mg/kg [Rabbit]. Acute toxicity of the vapor
(LC50): 8000 ppm 4 hour(s) [Rat].

Chronic Effects on Humans: The substance is toxic to lungs, the nervous system, mucous membranes.

Other Toxic Effects on Humans:
Very hazardous in case of ingestion, of inhalation. Hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant, permeator).
Special Remarks on Toxicity to Animals: Not available.

Special Remarks on Chronic Effects on Humans: Passes through the placental barrier in human.

I use SLX, the boiling point of MEK is 194*f if I recall, only slightly higher than the ethanol/methanol. There is also only about a half a tsp per gallon of it, but it requires heat and stirring to evaporate all the solvents thoroughly. A couple cooling cycles help too. I too am buying a still so I can make my own ethanol though, at $280 per gallon a still pays for itself very quickly.

Interesting, last year the MSDS for SLX showed MEK for a denaturing agent, but they have indeed changed it to MIBK now. Oh well, MIBK boils at 240*f but evaporates at room temps still, gettingrid of it isn't difficult.

Good point LB! Companies are not locked into always supplying the same product, but an MSDS change is required, if they do change. As LB notes, you must continue to pay attention to detail.

I'm a wimp that doesn't feel comfortable with an agent that boils at 240F, given the temperatures that we are trying to keep the cannabis oil confined to, to optimize THC and decarboxylation. It could of course be done, but I am lazy and better products are available, so I look for easier methods..................

Ohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Gray wolf I gotta ask, what your preferred solvent for qwiso?

Also, how do you decarboxylase?

Well there you have me, because to me QWISO is quick wash Isopropyl, for which I purchase 99% Isopropyl from Safeway. Except for experiments, all of my iso ends up as topical medications

I also use denatured alcohol for the same purpose, because we can get it cheaper. About $5/gallon by the drum or $10/gal in 5 gallon buckets. We call that a QWDE.

For oral consumption and for cleaning up the Iso and denatured extractions, I use 190 proof ethanol. We call a quick wash ethanol extraction a QWET.

I decarboxylate by putting the final oil in a 250F hot Canola oil bath, until all the solvent is gone and the CO2 bubbles drop off. Usually around 30 minutes.

I noticed a lot of people won't smoke the qwet (sugars, etc) but do use ethanol to clean up the other extracts into an absolute - why isn't the same reasoning applied here when smoking the results?

I don't know the answer to that question, other that some of the folks are damn sure of things that ain't so.

QWET is one of my personal favorites, for its flavor and effects.
