increasing oil production via needle pokes????

The title basically sums up what this thread is about, i just heard about this on youtube, the grower of a video posted that information either in the description or somewhere in the video. Anyway what was said was that you could take a sterile needle and poke a few holes in the branches of the plant about half-way through flowering and the plant will think its being attacked by insects and start producing more oils. in a way it made sense because the oil production in cannabis is to keep insects from destroying the flowers of the plant.

Has anyone ever tried this? i dont think it would even be harmful to the plant but i am not in a situation or place to be growing right now so i cant try this myself but i did think this is possibly note worthy.. if.... it works.. which is a 50/50 imo

I am also curious to hear other peoples methods of increasing the oil production.

Peace and Pot, Cheers..

its a fairly traditional practice with some other plants too - for instance some farmers bang nails etc into trees to improve crops. not sure if it actually works or not but it would make a good subject for a side by side grow.

personally i am suspicious of 'interventionist' techniques and i suspect human nature makes us like to feel that we are doing something pro-active to make things better....

I agree with VG. Nail have been used for many years. I have never noticed any improvement.

Distressing the plant, with physical torture to increase THC production has been disproved numerous times. You can distress it with nutrients and light.

Why is someone who doesn't grow, posting hearsay on an 'Cannabis botany and advanced science' thread.

If your a 'theoretical' grower,"I heard" if you hang the plant upside down the THC will be squeezed out of the roots, now spread more hearsay

This 'gem' of a thread belongs in the new grower forum

back in yesteryore, I aw several mentions of tortouring plants to increase yeild/potency, but I've never tried it. I've also read that this sort of trearment can stress the plants to hermie or just not do well.... I wouldn't torture my kids or family, so why do it to my plants?

This would make sense except the oil production in cannabis is to protect the plant from UV light.

As anyone who has grown seriously can tell you, the resin does a very poor job of protecting the plant from insects.

Look people i am a grower by trade but i am not growing at the moment for legal reasons, i do intend on growing in the future if you must be so fucking nosy to know... On top of that i am not a newby at all, i used to post all of my grows on another site i cant mention because its blocked out, i swear some of these people at ICmag... you guys act like "if your not in my club and i dont know you how could you ever be a good grower" could you guys ego's get any bigger? I promise you i have grown buds bigger than all of our faces, so cut out the kiddie bullshit okay. I was asking a serious question because the comment had about 40 thumbs up beside it so aparently there was something to this... idiot.

im not aiming that at everyone but its clear which comments go to whom, peace out

i doubt it works .as i have never noticed a difference between plants with lots of pest issues and those without.

i remember reading something about it. it would seem that stress might slow down growth rates but not resin production . so you get less yield but more thc. actually the same amount of thc but on less plant matter, so more concentrated. makes me wonder cause some of the best smoke i had was from fucked up plants with tiny yield. no way to know for sure without lab tests

I'm not growing so seriously, I do have a lot of fun :dance013:, so let me disagree with resin being only against UV light and not protecting against insects.
Why are all these chemical cascades with hundreds of terpenes, cannabinoids, precursors and enzimes? Just to protect against UV light? If it was just this, only one cascade and resulting chemical (say THC) would be enough. But why build trichomes just for this function when they can have other functions too? Many plants are using trichome-like structures for various reasons.
You don't need serious growing, only an afternoon of observing caterpillars to see that they definitely don't like to eat trichome-covered plant flesh, small caterpillers try to find a way between trichomes to chew into fresh plant parts. My observation is that buds attacked by caterpillars are more crystally... but I could be wrong, it's just MY observation, not scientific study with its methods.
Artificially hurting the plant to force it to play defensive has some logics, but the result depends on so many variables that it will hardly be proven by taking a syringe and poking wherever you like.

I am surprised nobody has made this comment yet, but perhaps not everyone reads all the post in a section.

If you damage the plant enough with your needle pokes I would assume that it would have a similar effect to a caterpillar eating a plant or other herbivores damaging the plant. Methyl esther jasmonic acid(?) MEJA will be released, which triggers the plant and nearby plants to produce more trichomes and hence more THC and terpenoids.

This is all discussed in the post gibberilins and jasmonic acid... in this section, a good read. They discuss the foliar application of meJA and other variants directly, and also de-foliation as having this potential effect as well. I would imagine if it did, that would be similar to poking a plant with a needle.

this one guy had heavily infested mite plants (webs & all)... and the grower commented on how it increased the number of amber colored glands.

and... this other cat had very, very moldy plants... and that guy suggested it definitely appeared frostier than other peoples.

seems like there might be something to this stressor thing... ;-)

If you hurt your girls during flowering the high will not be a smooth one...

Loved plants, and I mean spoiled rotten gals give you the sweetest high.

I rather encourage nice hormones during flowering instead of stress and THC edginess.

Can not prove it scientifically but I've noticed results during past harvests.

I want happy plants producing happy buds!

i have experienced both, i have had plants i had originally thought and nearly all the way through bud that looked not so good but when actually smoked they were chronic. they werent pest stressed but stressed via less care, and i have had plants that were well cared for and this is my personal belief that the better you make the situation optimum for the plants the better the buds will be, flavors and all.

I have read the jasmonic acid and gibberelin thread, very good read. its obviously over some of these peoples heads... lol. But as far as this needle poking and stressing goes, people have been saying it for years... "Maybe there is something to stressing plants" so, idk maybe there is

and as far as the thc and other chemicals getting thrown out of whack proportionately, i think i could deal with that. personally it would be my special smoke, for when i needed a break from life so to speak, or something like that

Another esoteric tip:

Talk to your plants and tell them how sexy and hot they are... flirt with them while touching their leafs...

Make them fall in love with you... After all, they are "supermodels" of the botany world!

And you their man!... LOL

All helps and is connected.

And while telling them how sexy they are poke them here and there, they won't mind it ;)

Tacks in main stem...

Tacks in main stem...

:tiphat:Hi Everyone ! Some interesting info in this forum..... there was a story years ago in High Times, about slivers of a certain pine tree that were inserted into the base of the main stem during the last month of flowering, before harvest, to increase resin production, so today, use thumb tacks, and put them in alcohol to sanitize them, and insert where the main stem comes out of soil/cube, and leave it there,
til harvest.......Had OG Kush side by side tacked and untacked, guess which had more RESIN.......So, try it and see.....
