1.4 million without power; electricity may not be fully restored until Friday

I'm sure we'll probably see a few threads about this when people can use their computers again.

More than 1.4 million customers lost power during a blackout in the San Diego area, and utility officials said power might not be fully restored until Friday.

San Diego Gas and Electric said the outage appears to have originated in Arizona and that the agency is working with California power officials to bring the power back. Officials said the outages extended across Southern California and into Arizona and Baja California.

The loss of power led to a shutdown of two reactors at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

Gil Alexander, a spokesman for Southern California Edison, said the power outage did not cause any safety issues. Alexander said a fluxation in power caused the reactors to shut down at 3:38 p.m. but that the overall plant continues to have power.

He said the system worked as it was supposed to during a loss of power.

Across San Diego, businesses are closed, traffic is snarled and the trolley system is down. San Diego International Airport was on backup generators.

The city of San Diego has set up its emergency operations center.

Sheriff's officials told Fox 5 San Diego that many of its substations were without power. Utility officials are trying to figure out what cause the outage.

[Updated at 5:14 p.m.: SDG&E said both its power supplies were compromised, though it is unclear exactly how. Lines from Arizona and from the north appeared to fail, the utility said.
"Hot days in a row like we have had create lots of power flowing. Could have had an impact," SDG&E said in a statement on Twitter.]

When I was in Costco tonight I saw a generator like this one (not this exact one but close too it) Provided 12K watt's more than enough to run my rooms AND the house AND as a bonus it runs on LP and where I would put it it is like a 15 foot run to the LP tank. Then I got home and saw the news about San Diego and Southern Cali being outta power, I am getting this ASAP!

and we in NJ we without power, the wife kindly cussed me out, cause i threw away her old land line wall phone, but then again i was squarely kickin myself in the ass since i was soooo ill prepared, not even worried about the plants.

before all the crap with the storm/floods started happening i was talkin to the wife about building a fairly sizable greenhouse in the back yard, its a really small yard and all its good for is chililn/grillin, so im seriously thinking about keeping some out there juuuuust in case some shit like this happens again, and then i wont be totally stuck.

then again that generator idea sounds nice aswell, but sheesh the $ those things run you. . . . eh we'll see

good choice, always go w/the LP model as diesel & regular gas break down and can fail you when it's most important, LP gas never goes bad. LP burns cleaner and will not foul up spark plugs as often and will never gum up a carburetor like gas will as your genny sits between uses.

12K will run your entire home, garden lights/fans/bubblers etc w/out breaking a sweat. You might not be able to use your electric clothes dryer & electric stove (if you have those) simultaneously w/out measuring their power draw.

It seemed like everyone trying to call the radio station was breaking up and dropping off. I think the relay towers were affected as well.

correct, besides a cell phone could NEVER replace this.......

yup, and I need to take my own advice here too. I own (2) a diesel and a gasoline powered genny myself, my only propane genny is a 5500 watt unit tied into my motorhome. I'm going to sell the gas powered unit as it's nearly new and buy one of the Buffalo LP gennys above.

my only concern is losing power when it's -40F here in the winter, LP gas tends to not flow in those temps unless you also have a tank heater.
