20. The Bodhisattva Never Disparaging

Text: “but should with a single mind / preach this sutra far and wide, / age after age encountering Buddhas / and quickly completing the Buddha way.”

Summary: This passage is saying that, when one makes clear the fact that all living beings in the Dharma-realm have from the beginning possessed the three truths in their single minds, then at each moment one encounters the Buddhas in one’s own mind, which is called “age after age encountering Buddhas.” This is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

21. Supernatural Powers of the Thus Come One

Text: “Such a person assuredly and without doubt / will attain the Buddha way.”

Glosses on the right:
without doubt—the cutting off of fundamental darkness

Glosses on the left:
Such a person—the ten factors of life

Summary: This passage is saying that, since each of the Ten Worlds is eternally endowed with the ten factors of life of original enlightenment, both hell and the world of Buddhahood are essentially one, and hence we are assumed of attaining Buddhahood. This is what is meant by accepting and upholding Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

"Simple as it may sound, in concrete terms, establishing a firm personal foundation starts with your own health. As an individual and a member of society, your most precious possession is your life. That’s why I urge you to please take good care of your health. Monitoring your health and taking steps to prevent illness are reflections of the wisdom of Buddhist faith and practice."

"Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbour doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood. Do not have doubts simply because heaven does not lend you protection. Do not be discouraged because you do not enjoy an easy and secure existence in this life."

"Putting our beliefs into practise is a part of the drama of life. When we feel engaged, we feel inspired. Of course, we will sometimes make mistakes, but the experience of not allowing those mishaps to hinder us, of getting back up again and fighting through to the end, inspires others. Stories about overcoming seemingly impossible odds can ignite the spirits of those who are feeling powerless and without hope, giving them courage to break through their own limitations."

Yooooooo that's me! Thanks for everything posted recently PTD! This is a powerful quote because lately I've been battling fundamental darkness or my own negativity big time. I'm going to FNCC for the first time in a couple weeks and feel so stoked about it because I'm realizing Nichiren Daishonin's hope and Sensei Ikeda's vision for America and worldwide kosen-rufu. So many meetings to attend because so many people are inviting your chanting grower brother into the mix.

Sensei is sending extra appreciation out to the Women's Division in a recently World Tribune and I want to echo those sentiments with love and sincere gratitude for all the women in the lives of chanting growers and the chanting grower female bodhisattvas we all love dearly! Thanks for making my life such a better place! Thank you so much!

"If in a single moment of life we exhaust the pains and trials of millions of kalpas, then instant after instant there will arise in us the three Buddha bodies with which we are eternally endowed. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is just such a 'diligent' practice."

"The history of our movement is one of embarking on new challenges based on first earnestly chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with fresh determination. Everything begins with daimoku. With our best wisdom and effort based on steadfastly chanting daimoku, we have triumphed over all manner of great obstacles. By regarding adversity as an opportunity to deepen our faith, bring forth the beneficial power of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, and gain brilliant personal experiences of spiritual rebirth and revitalisation, we have pressed forward tirelessly to open the way for kosen-rufu."

"No matter how unexpectedly our loved ones may pass away, we should be assured that the lives of all who have formed a connection to the Mystic Law--whether through their own practice or their ties with us--will on death be enfolded in the protective embrace of the Buddhas and heavenly deities, and will enter a path leading to Buddhahood without fail.

"In particular, nothing can sever the ties of family members bound together by the Mystic Law. Though you may be temporarily separated by death, eventually you will be born again together in the 'same land of the Mystic Law' (cf. WND-1, 1074), and continue your unending journey of life together pervaded by the four noble virtues of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity. This is the promise of Nichiren Daishonin."

"Buddhism is based on reason. If we overeat, drink too much, don’t get enough sleep, and work too hard, eventually we’ll feel the ill effects of that behaviour, become sick, or cause an accident. To prevent that from happening, we need to act wisely and lead a sound and value-creating life. This is the Buddhist way.

"It is vital to lead a balanced, disciplined life, do gongyo and chant daimoku to refresh and revitalise ourselves, and then, brimming with life force, actively participate in our workplaces and communities."
