well a while back i posted about the audio problem w/ my sanyo 42" lcd that is just a year old now....nevermind the audio prob....we dont use the tv speakers anyway.

well today the screen went blank....green power light is on, but no screen....sometimes the power light will blink....and sometimes it seems to power off on its own.....only started all that today.

...called sanyo and was told that im out of warranty...take it to the shop and pay for it myself....and literally got hung up on.....(didn't expect much more tho)

....anyone know if this is something i can fix myself...or what it might be?

....or have a tv repair friend u can call and ask what i'm looking at and cost????

I fixed my old samsung lcd by replacing bad capacitors on the mainboard of the tv... Had to open it, find the bad caps, desolder them, replace them with new ones from radioshack, and bam, perfectly working tv for like 5 bucks in parts and a little time.

You can determine if the caps have gone bad by noticing a bulge at the top, or even fluid leaking out the top, whereas good ones will be flat or depressed at the top.

It's subtle in the pic, but when you see it in person in 3D you'll be able to tell if they are flat or bulged pretty easy.

This may not be the problem with your TV at all, but its prolly worth a look inside. If you do need to remove the board upon seeing bad caps, just pay attention to all the connections and put them back right - snap a pic when you get it open and everything is still connected.

edit - I should add, my tv specifically started taking a long time to activate the screen after hitting the power button... After a couple months, it would just try forever without being able to get the screen on. After replacing those capacitors, it was back to turning on as fast as when it was brand new. Does sound kinda similar to your issue, so this is why i say its worth a look inside, especially being such a cheap fix.

A few quick checks you can do:
1. Vacuum the cooling intake and exhaust ports to ensure they ar not clogged with dust and causing overheating.
2. Use a can of pressurized air to blow out the dust covering the board and components. This can cause overheating as well.
3. Unplug the set and after about 3 mins, hold the power and vol+ buttons while plugging the set in.
4. Try a different input.

If that doesn't fix it then the board, supply transformer or inverter has an issue. Get a price quote for repair/replacement and then decide you will be better off buying a new Samsung D8000.

more than likely bojangles is right. blown caps. dont solder the same size caps in get slightly bigger. if a cap is bad its puffed on the end.

just go to the store and buy another one. I bought my 42" Panasonic for like 500. You can buy a cheap 13" plasma at like CVS. Just spend a few hundred bucks right now this minute and go to the store so you can wake up tomorrow and watch TV rather than logging back into this thread on ideas on how to fix a television.
Just go to the store, and buy a TV.

lol...

well i think i might have it down to the main power board, and might consider just gettin 1 for 50 buks and trying it......

....but got a place 20 min. away that will do a free estimate....so might just take advantage, unless anyone else thinks pretty solid that its the main power board.

seems these sanyo's are notorious for probs w/ that power board....

...caps all look fine

...any other thoughts :dunno:

bummer, the last 2 TVs I bought were Sanyo's that died before their time. one was a 26" tube style set less than 2 yrs old, the next was an LCD w/an extended warranty that didn't make it (random dark spots on the screen) to its 2nd yr. I insisted on an upgrade (anything but a Sanyo) and it was replaced with a Sony Bravia which works wonderfully.

CraigsList is an excellent source for 2nd hand TVs btw if you need to go that route.......

Speaking strictly consumer series sets, not comercial:

Sanyo across the board sucks, IMO not worth the time or money for a repair ...Sony Bravia's WERE good but not the models in the last 2.5 yrs since they changed their video board production from Taiwan to a factory in China. Now Sony's are only Ok.

if you looking in the used market, keep an eye out for a Pioneer Elite series or a Nuvision, these are the absolute best looking pictures in the past few years but both stopped TV production due to economy and market flooding of cheap shit TVs like Sanyo and Vizio.

in the market for new, Samsung D8000 series ... hands down best bang for the buck.

Quality is your best value.

Sanyo is not quality, but neither are your stupid dread threads.

Birds of a feather...

Go outside and play with your son.
