well, fuqed up it will be if the shit hits the fan... i guess collectives will be the way to survive, for longer than weeks or a month... cause no man/woman can do everything alone... so it will be community, teamplay and workloadshare (by expertise and capability of each one) or extinction i guess...

think about having a 20h day, and how much can you invest in each activity neccerssery to keep you alive? in the means of trade-off "theory" theres no way to survive alone... at least that's my opinion :)

Oh good lord, I gotta learn my tablet better, had this nice long post written up, and one errant finger killed it :badday:

Not gonna redo it all. High points:

Not about 2012, started looking at being energy independent shortly after I had kids, after an ice storm killed power and people froze to death in their homes.

Thats where the underground house came from, which led to generating my own needs (take heating and cooling out of the mix drops your need a ton), which led to engines and fuels, which led to metallurgy and machining (make/repair parts, bonus: guns). Just kinda snowballed.

Seemed once I got to thinking about providing for myself, everything I had to rely on someone else for seemed suspect. :D

As far as the end of the world thing, seems that any self-suffecient discussion turns that way these days, so I figured I'd jump in front of it.

Went with the geomagnetic storm because its happened repeatedly, and a massive blow to our electrical grid would indeed end the way the world now functions. Simple fact is, we have a civilization that is dependent for survival on a resource very very few of the general population understand.

Being independent of the grid isn't about EotW, its about surviving the next ice storm. Our society is so dependent on a power grid that is old and over taxed that people start dying if the power goes out for more than a day. Thing is, it wouldn't take very much to bring it down for weeks.

So, you ask me how I think shit goes south hard, I look at our dependence on electricity and electronics. To have it happen on a world scale, I look at the sun, which has a nasty habit of frequently spewing massive amounts of energy at our planet. Yep, I gotta go with the geomagnetic storm as being the most likely "Game over, please restart" scenario.

1859 - Carrington event was a biggy. Fortunately not too many electronics, but zapped telegraphs and their operators.

A weaker one knocked out electrical grid in Quebec in 1989. 6 million w/o power, but restored pretty quickly. Made "northern lights" down to Texas.

Imagine one with the strength of the Carrington event happening now, in our "always-on" world.

DOH!

Not waiting for it, or hoping for it, or even preparing for it specifically. But, no matter what knocks out my power, ice storm or grid crushing solar snot, my family won't die because the switch got thrown.

I can grow it, catch it, kill it, skin it, gut it, grill it. I can make fire at least 3 ways without matches or a lighter. I can work steel. I can tan leather. I can make my own booze.

I think I'll be OK.

Running water would be a close second but butter still wins.
Bacon is a definate fourth, cigarettes five.

Bacon would be tough.

But with electricity, I'll still have hot and cold running water, and, unlike coffee and sugar cane, tobacco grows quite well here :D

No, they'll be pretty weak and sickly by then...probably be like punching an elderly person. They'll be more of a nuisance than a threat "hun can you burn the bodies off the razorwire? They're getting kinda ripe."

We're not gonna have a post apocalyptic world. We're just gonna mine and burn enough combustibles so that life on Earth will be a miserable existence. We won't have to steal fuel from each other, big oil will still be squeezing some rock on some godforsaken corner of the globe and things will just get worse.

All you folks saving your money for weapons and ammo, forget that and get a safe for your cases of sun screen. :hotbounce

how about we try things the OTHER way?!?!? just this once if things do collapse. . . .

everyone gets 5 acres of land, and 5 types of livestock of your choice, we all grow our own. the seeds are there, the sun is there and the time is there and by that time it would all be free. no having to worry about generators and all that other shit, all you need is the good ol farmers almanac and your good

no more taxes, if your here in the country then your here! no going back across borders or any of that shit.

people home school your kids.

i used to watch little house on the prairie and now that im older and all of this shit is going on, wouldn't it make sense to return to a simpler time? and now i think that show would have been even better if there was some mention of weed somewhere since hemp was well in use at the time

no bosses, work to go to, cars to break down all this other shit to worry about . . .

maaan fuck it, if this shit collapses and debt is rubbed clean im headin to the great out doors and sustain myself, hunting and gathering!

imagine disconnecting in order to connect . . . you feel me?!

I can wish ya all the best but I'm a fool for the city. You really won't need to go to the woods, it'll come to you. Hell, a bear could be chasin yer ass down Wall Street and you can duck into a parking-garage stairwell for safety. Can't find that kind of infrastructure in the wild.:)
