its like jimi, hendrix was the first to come to mind, cause he played one mean guitar, chop a mouintain down with his dick styla music..

but i dont recall any of his melodies clearly.

Paige, Clapton and another famous guitarist(iforget) were listening to records before all their fame. And clapton says whos the other guy playing on the RJ CROSSROADS song. Page says" its one Guy, Robert Johnson. And Claptons been trying to copy him ever since.

..yeah, and those guys would name yet another bunch of guys as their idols :)

(though, they couldnt hear themselves and would judge later guitar players with the standard of old folks everywhere with new music)

dimebag - i just love dimebag for his solos and crazy riffs

jimi hendrix!! - the guy was a fucking genius and also totally underrated rythm guitar play. his rythm stuff is off the hook not only his solos! i love his concert at woodstock, he comes on stage with a fat joint in his mouth and just plays all this badass stuff like its nothing. i got a poster of him in my kitchen.

zakk wylde - total monster, awesome technique and speed AND he puts a lot of soul into his music which is rare for shredders

jimmy page - its fucking jimmy page duh

tony iommi - this guy got his fingertips chopped off which didnt keep him from being one badass guitar player. the early black sabbath stuff is just genius! the later dio stuff is grea too and he sounds totally different. oh and he basically invented metal music all by himself.

the dude from zz top - badass blues guitarist, back in the day hendrix called him the best blues player on the planet. this man got so much style its unbelievable.

randy roads - holy shit that guy was good! i dont think ozzy ever had one bad guitarist lol.

buckethead - check out some shit like "big sur moon" unbelievable.

SRV - great blues guitarist

david gilmore - best guitar sound ever? i hear this guy used to have like 30 effect pedals for his guitar signal. his sound is unbelievable. maybe not one of the technical guitar gods but i just love pink floyd.l

some oldschool blues dudes like bb king, robert johnson, john lee hooker and the like are awesome too! or chuck berry he basically invented rocknroll. or prince, i saw him mentioned in this thread i love prince! i could go on and on i guess, so many great guys. why is there not even ONE great female guitarist btw?

yeah man it was a sad day when dimebag died, i was really shook!

matter of fact most of my favourite guitarists - and rappers too - are dead. but the quota is higher on rappers. rock guitarists dont go around drive-by-shooting or overdosing on codeine lol.

Jimmy Hendrix
Terry Kath ........Hendrix not only admired his playing, he even said it was better.
Jimmy Page
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Randy Rhodes

IMO, Terry Kath was/is the greatest underrated guitarist of all time.
Like others have mentioned, too many greats get left out on a list of 5.
Django Reinhardt
Les Paul
etc, etc...

:D
