Rattlesnake tastes like chicken, but unless you de-bone it first, it's more akin to eating a boney fish. Mmmmm, tasty!

just for the record ... I did step right on it and I was barefoot .... feeling pretty lucky today:)
And yes I would probably also feel the same way...lucky. For sure a good thing that critter did not turn around and bite you as it would not have been fun. I mean in the 'safety' of your home something like this happens? Dry out the skin/rattle and create a 'shadow box' art installation and hang it on the wall. I dunno what a Native American shaman might say but seems like an auspicious event of sorts. Strong medicine! Give thanks.

It's a beautiful snake, and I think we should all pack a bowl for it, but all that's important at the moment is that neither MrsBabba or MrBabba were bitten!!! :)
I think it is great that no one is hurt, but I agree it's a shame it is dead. Couldn't you just have chased it back out the door with the shovel? Even if that was not practical in your case, I think the message must get out not to kill anything out of fear or just for the hell of it, and snakes are useful and needed in the environment and should not be killed just because they are a snake.

That is a rattlesnake it's in the sub family of pit vipers, and one of the most common snakes in the southwestern united states. They are fervent breeders and their population is very good. No harm in killing one of these in the least bit.

Have you ever had an encounter like this? I did, when I was a kid once It's scary. I am against needless killing but we decided to kill the rattle snake too. I don't regret it....... but my dad made me grill it over a fire and eat it with him. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't want to eat it all the time.

Forget chasing a snake out the house, those things are fast and mean and an unexperienced person should not try and make that snake do anything it doesn't want to. I probably would have shot at it like ole yo samity sam! bang bang bang lol

I don't like to kill, but men have to do things sometime thy no like. When you have snake in house it can kill your pets or your children. It is man's responsibility to make house safe for everyone else. Say a prayer and remove the bad.

wow tough story, it happens not too often but currently I am glad to live in Europe where we have actually no dangerous animals like that.

And yes, even though I feel ambivalent too about the fact that you killed it, it was the right thing to do in terms of keeping your family and you safe from harm.

Shit, I could not even let the door open if there were the slightest chance snakes could be around , would be too afraid :)

time to go to the casino or play the lottery. It is extremely rare for a snake like that to be stepped on and not strike. If it were my house I would be asking babba how to fix shotgun holes in the floor. Looks to be a nasty little timber from the markings.

You should hang that thing in the front yard, and let all his buddies know the Babbas don't fuck around!

I'm glad you didn't get bit, but it is a shame you had to kill it. With a little experience and maybe a hook you could have just relocated it, or even better, kept it as a pet. Assuming you have no children that is. I used to keep "Hot Snakes" quite a bit when I was in high School. Rattlers, copperheads, Etc. Never had anything cool like leucistic King cobra or anything though...Just common indigenous species.

A mongoose can't react fast enough to kill a rattlesnake. It's been tried and the mongoose lost, For those that don't know, a rattlesnake can strike accurately in 1/16th of a second.
