Training Our Pet Dogs As Sniffers...For Safety's Sake

Dogs can sniff out a cash stash? The Bank of Me isn't as safe as I once thought it was.

I can't remember where I read it, but hiding things high in a room makes it harder for a dog to locate it.

Most dogs can be trained to snif out pot, cancer, and a host of explosive and combustible material. Its all in the training and having the patients do train a dog. Granted some dogs are going to be easier to train than others. I have a Standard Poodle that is incredibly smart and easy to teach, but my Great Dane takes a little more time and work to get the same idea.

I use breed and sell dogs.One time, I had a guy come out and said he trained dogs for leo and sold them. He did not do the breeding himself just aquired the pups that he thought "had it" and went from there with training. I was breeding pitbull's. He never worked with pits and wanted to give them a try. I said ahhhhh....ugghhh....ok..
He picked two pups that he thought "had it"
But first,
He asked me for pots and pans, and he banged them together to see how the litter would react.
Next he shouted loud , again to see their reaction, then a host of other tests, with dog toys ext...
He was looking for that pup with serious "prey drive".
You know that dog, that is obsessed with his toy ball? Or the dog that catches rabbits in your yard? That is prey drive.
Certin breeds possess this more then others.
Game bred(older bloodlines working dogs) pitbulls, have this as well, but often dogs are used by leo to pursue suspects as well as sniff shit out.
If a pitbull catches a dude.... They dont let go.
Shepards do, often on verbal command or a tug at the collar.
Not to mention , gamebred pitbulls, for the most part are not people aggressive, they are bred to be dog aggressive. So its safe to say my dogs were most likely NOT used by leo.
Anyway,
People often confuse german shepards with belgin malinois and dutch shepards, or a hybrid of the two.
These breeds are excellent for work, because of the high prey drive statistically in numbers.. And an incredible nose.
Most leo around here, now have belgin malinois, as well as the last few episodes of cops I saw. lol

Anyway, I think most breeds can be trained for dectetion, its just finding that "one" out of a litter of 8.

On that note, im running through situations where I would want to own a detection dog, and I cant think of one...Although I am always loosin my stash...

I dont doubt that some K9s are trained very well and are on command.

It seems as though the sniffers around here are for intimidation and are trained to bark. I've known friends to "make em bring the dogs out" only to turn up nothing after the dog was brought up to the car, sat down, and barked. Total bullshit.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to know how many days it would take for a trained German Shepherd to sniff out the weed in a triple vacuum sealed container? Or a quadruple vacuum sealed container? Imagine it – packaged in a clean room type environment with dog repellent at each level. With a few different dogs and some time with Excel, you could learn some potentially very valuable info.

i've got a 100%working line GSD. He is a trained protection dog and has a super high drive. thought about doing the same with him, as far as sniffing. He is more than qualified.

ive trained both my dogs to search, i use the command "go look"...one is 1.5 years and the other is 6 months....

they know the command and they know what to do...i just havent done it for anything specific, just food, toys...ect, but they know...i am a very good dog trainer, at 8 weeks i had my pup fully house trained, and he knew how to sit, laydown, and stay....

but if you smoke weed around your dog then he is useless as a weed sniffer...

Holy thread revival Batman! Aaaanyway, I think it bears mentioning that hiding your stuff up high is fuckin pointless. I have a 5lb miniature dachshund who stands about 6" high and 10" long, she loves her toys, it doesn't matter if it's rope, rubber, cloth or a damn tennis ball she can barely bite.

Even if she doesn't see you put a toy on top of the refrigerator or inside the bathroom vanity behind a closed bathroom door, as soon as she goes into the kitchen or near the bathroom door that bitch goes crazy.

Training her to see if she can locate weed would be an excellent way of hiding it This is genius, if she can't find it, LEO probably won't be able to

i tried and tried . ever since she accidentally ate some butter she hates the smell. i put weed in a balll and she wouldnt pick it up anymore LOL
