What's new

using lab grade acetone for oil

yo man you should pack the plant matter into a 50 cm long, 2cm wide pipe (glass is best, pvc will do). put a SCREEN over the bottom of the tube, and a container underneath. add your solvent to the top of the tube and let gravity and non-polar chemistry do its magic (its kinda like a packed-bed reactor). you can recycle the solvent through the top if you want, but should not need more than 3 runs. when you decided the solvent has absorbed all it can, allow it to evaporate off leaving behind the oh-so viscous oil you desire.

cheers

after one 8 hour period in the sun.

both runs still have some acetone in most of it. only the thinnest spots on the walls of the containers have hard oil. also the 1st wash has some water in it making parts of it have a strange look. the 2nd wash has no water as far as i can tell.

the 2nd day in the sun.

1st wash

very powerfull smell at this stage, but there is still some tiny amounts of humidity left in the oil. the oil at this stage looks almost like budder or a soft blond hash. the texture is really soft and creamy, but not particularly sticky unless heated.

3rd day sun drying

1st wash

the first pic is from BEFORE takeing it out.

this is after the 3rd day in the sun under semi see thru plastic. the oil is hard to the touch, and can be rolled into strings for smoking. cold it would propably shatter. the red tone stands out holding it over a white piece of paper, and not using the flash.

Good experiment brother BC! I have only just checked out acetone extraction casually and have been watching your progress with a closed mouth, having nothing worthy to offer, and hoping to learn.

I wouldn't sweat the last two washes, as I have found that even my third washes using any solvent that I have experimented with to date, has always had folks bowing to it, and willing to take it off my hands at our gratis price.

I have also never ever had a problem filling a gratis 12 member test panel, with no reward beyond their personal experiences and contribution to science.

It is all a matter of perspective and what your personal taste buds and system embrace.

If you decide that you would like to clean up the last wash, consider redissolving it in ethanol, freezing it, filtering it, and reducing it down again to lose a bunch of waxes and lipids.

thanks for the advice

i might clean it later on - its allways fun to experiment if there is any extra time over :D

Nice, even the second wash will be potent after it is evaporated fully. Have a non-grower friend test it out for the best response :)

whatre you using to filter your ethanol? im assuming it would work just the same with iso... please lmk :)

I use a coffee filter or a Wattman #1 lab filter for the first filtration. If I do a second filtration, I use a 0.2 micron syringe filter.

I have only made acetone oil once and used ethanol to make an absolute out of it.

ISO is a more agressive solvent than ethanol and will no doubt take some of the non active ingredients out of an acetone extraction, but I use ethanol to clean up ISO extractions, so I predict that ISO won't drop out as much as ethanol.
