Expect to walk lots, semi naked women in windows on the weekend, and of course lots of weed.

A mobile phone with gps map tracking thingy and an actual coffee shop map is what i did, learn how to use the trams too, it's well worth it. Visit Grey Area, Dampkring, Rokerij, Katsu, etc. Most the coffee shops in the red light district aren't great.

Barneys restaurant is a nice place to go have a half decent meal and smoke weed after.

Thankyou all for your replies ! I will be seeking out the best weed beyond. I heard its very expensive when it comes to food and alcohol , il be smoking and visiting places by day but at night I will be eating out and having a few beers , I know that will be the dearest but she will want that. Probably rent bikes and do a bit of cycling also gonna visit Anne Frank Museum and Van Gogh Museum.

Take a backpack with you and go to AH Albert Hejin (not sure of spelling) (good supermarkets all around town) and buy your food and drinks for the day there. I loved their the fresh fruit smoothies. Quite cheap in comparison to all shit you can buy in fast food stores or small tourist shops in red district.
Save some money for a good dinner with your girl. Go to international cousine and don't forget Burger bar (near flower market or near damrak) , cheap and delicious! Or Wok to walk also.
If you like a couple of drinks they're not so expensive, I'd prefer a smoke.
GO for bike rent! Do it as fast as you arrive, you'll get at least THE DOUBLE from Amsterdam with a bike, trust me!
Avoid anna frank if you see too much queue down there. It's not worth a 4 hours wait. V.G. museum is so precious, expecially with mushrooms...
Take care,

note that in that picture... the guy is in the back, and he has a purse LOL

vondel park is fun too.... it's a nice little park not too far from the centre of amsterdam
ponds, trees, benches, it's pretty big, a lot of grass to sit on... have a pic nic maybe ? smoke some weed

heineken factory
you get a couple (3-4) beers with your entrance fee (which wasn't expensive)

Grey area! say hi to jon. Take your chick on the flower market tour, pretty amasing.
Maybe someone knows the name but maybe half a mile from the albert Hiens market is a mall and at the bottom of the mall is the best food court you'll ever find there, the food is clean fresh, resonable, and tasty/healthy. Really really advise checking this place out, First!

My favorite wake and bake is Speakeasy down the ally for the grasshopper, Cafe' verket (sp). - love the local vibe -

Also Arjans Resteraunt w/ the aquarium in the entry floor. where you can get a good american style meal and smoke all you want during the meal they'll even bring you a bong for the table. My wife still takes about the whitewidow WW sandwhich she had there. I know I'll and up take her back soon just for that damb sandwhich.

Remember this annidote - Never bring sand to the Beach!

amsterdam is marijuana disney land
I love amsterdam, im happy such a place exists

of course, you have to be careful for thieves and crooks
my friend got his wallet stolen

and since its a tourist place.... there is a lot of places just fiending for money

some people can be rude, because they are tired of tourists...

all in all, its a good place to experience at least once... I think its preferable to be with one person at least... shady dealers and looney drug addicts approaching you...
or other people who will take advantage of you

the canals make for a relaxed atmosphere... and amsterdam attracts a lot of varied people, from all over the world

Don't plan too much, you likely won't accomplish half of what you plan on doing and seeing. I think we made it to the sex museum which was a waste of our money and time and so we just did the coffeeshop tour. Sorry Heineken brewery, sorry Anne Frank. Maybe next time, but then again, probably not.

Im not sure what u can expect as of now. My visit was a few yrs back before all these new laws were being implemented. Stayed at the jolly carlton which was great, looking over the main drag. Overall it was a good time. do want to be aware when the trams are going by and traffic starts moving as not to get run over.

You will find yourself starving cause the food is not the best selection.French fries come with almost everything. Luckily the hotel had a decent breakfast in the morning to make up for food searching throughout the day. I did stop at gypsy's place when he had a shop.

Check out some of the museums with some really old history. pretty cool stuff. I remember asking the waitress if its cool to smoke up outside and shes like no problem. I believe that was at the grasshopper. Check out sensi- the flying dutchman was across from sensi, i believe diagonal. overall im glad i did go when i did before all the new laws went into effect. i wanted to hit alien grow shop but nobody knew where it was. Finally i was told it was outside the city on the outskirts. also check out the fishing village and the cheese making factory(went by bus)Hopefully youll come back with a good story or two.

I've been to amsterdam and loved it.

A couple of tips.

1. Pickup a cheap coffeeshop guide book with a map in it. Will save you a lot of time and tell you where all the top spots can be found.

2. If you want a good night out and want to experience the best of amsterdam nightlife go with a large group. ask the people where u are staying about any local nightlife tours. They seriously kick ass.

3. Bikes.. They go with the map. Rent them for the whole duration and make sure they come with working locks.

4. Explore! theres so much too see and do! don't waste time dwindling and doing things ya can do at home.

5. Watch out for trams.

Be sure to visit the dampkring! Out of all the coffeeshops I visited the dampkring was my favorite. I really just wanted to make it my home. Live there with the cat in sweet stoner harmony.

Heres some pics I took in 2005.
