Mineral oil? Could you tell me more about this method? I'm always looking for tips on long-term seed preservation. Thanks!

If you store seeds submerged in a vial or bottle of mineral oil, they stay viable longer.

The mineral oil excludes oxygen, prevents drying, and deters pests.

It works well for callus, too.

ive grown seeds that were 7 years old and in horrible conditions, sitting in lit rooms on tables the entire time, getting any light even sunlight.. around people smoking, partying, loud music and god knows what else.

all i did was use moist paper towel with tap water, saran wrap and a glass plate like i would do with any seed. havent had any problem germing any of them and i yielded plenty from them as well, they grew just as healthy as seeds i could get that just popped a couple days ago..

so i imagine if this guy supposedly kept them stored properly you shouldnt have any problems.

i mean you have so many it wouldnt kill you to just try to germ them normally and see what happens am i right?

get a glass, fill with water, add a handful of seeds. sit glass on windowsill walk away. come back in 4 days, plant the ones that sprouted and are showing tails.

the end.

you guys be trying way too hard sometimes...

Sterilize the seed using 30% ETOH for 30 seconds, and then rinse with autoclalved sterile water 5 times for 15 seconds each rinse.

Plant the seeds using sterile technique on 1/2 strength MS medium containing 10 g/L sucrose, 5.5 g/L agar, pH 6.8, @ 25 degrees Celcius under florescent light for 16 h per day.

If they have a shot, and you can manage to get them into the Petri dishes/jars using sterile technique, this should bring them to life.

Good luck,

Age vs storage.

Age vs storage.

I planted some seeds from '84 also, which sat in a very hot mailbox for hours.
Just poked them in coco and walked away.
Planted 4.
All 4 sprouted in a less than a week and 3 were females!
Now, I got fresh seed.

Conversely.
A friend shipped his seeds in a container from Ca. to Hawaii.
He gifted me with a handfull, (about 60).
They were from 2009 and I tried to germ them in the spring of 2010, with every trick I know and some that I looked-up.

Not a sausage! Zilch!
Never even cracked!

I gotta wonder if the dept. of agriculture fumigated them in transit.

So, what's your seed history?
Where have they been?

Aloha,

chillout Dave, as you stated a pressure cooker can be used as an autoclave.... don't blame others because you are too lazy to search out info on the internet. Anyone with broadband, 30 seconds, and an IQ over 100 can easily find pre-made Maurashige and Skoog Media, powdered or pre-prepped and poured into Petri dishes or glassware.... if you only have dial-up at home get in a car and head to an internet cafe.

If it's too difficult for you, you are either lazy or aren't trying, and you have no plans to put the info to use regardless.... so what are you complaining about?

cept everyone without a goddamn chemistry degree wont know wtf ETOH and MS media even mean, let alone how to get their hands on an autoclave.

so i google ETOH, and what the fuck do i find out... its ethanol... why the fuck didn't you just say ethanol? im guessing you're a scientist by trade and don't realize some people don't know all the technical jargon. its cool im the same way about computers.

A guy I know just popped about 25 seeds from the 60's. He just put em outside in the ground. He told me later that he didn't expect any to grow, but all of em are growing beautifully now.
I traded him for 4 of the seedlings are just a couple days ago I moved 2 females and a male out doors to finish out a seed grow.

I would agree about just testing a few as usual. They might pop without any additional bs.

i would love to see a grow on this. will you document it?

this thread has inspired me. im going to start a new thread right now with some late 90's bagseed.

I documented the condition the plants were in when I got them because I used them in an infirmary thread.

I suppose I can get pictures the next time I go check on em. It would be an interesting grow because they are suppose to be the original Orange County Kush. So far they look like they might actually be what the guy claimed, so I have no reason to disbelieve the age of the seeds either.
