Diabetes....

I just did a search for a thread about diabetes in this forum and not a one showed up...kinda surprised, diabetes (type 2, adult onset) being almost an epidemic in the US. So I thought I would start one.

I just got diagnosed with type 2. I was told by the doctor (no insurance, had to go to a clinic) that there was nothing I could do now, I would have it forever, would need to take medication and radically change my diet....forever. I thought I remembered reading that it was possible to reverse type 2 if you did the right things...like change diet, exercise, etc. This doctor told me no way, I was stuck with it.

After leaving, I did some research, found out this doctor was full of shit. Bought a book by this guy Dr. Neal Barnard, he is a real expert, and he believes it is possible to reverse it. Requires that you drastically change your diet (he doesn't even speak to the subject of exercise in his book, his results don't depend on it, but if you exercise the benefits are even better), basically you need to go on a vegan diet (no animal products, dairy included), and also limit as much vegetable fats as possible as well. His studies were only over a 3 month period, and participants had fantastic results. Best thing about this diet is you don't have to count calories, can still eat good amounts of food.

I'm doing this diet now, and it really isn't as bad as I thought it would be. This is one of those situations where if you don't do what's required, the end result is so much worse than changing your diet. Diabetes, if unchecked, will lead to things like blindness, all sorts of physical maladies, and often amputated limbs. Makes going on a diet an easier decision.

I'm hoping that I can reverse my shitty glucose numbers, and eventually get to the point where I can include meat and dairy dishes once in a while. But, I'll have to keep exercising for the rest of my life, but that is a good thing.

Any other old farts got diabetes?

Hey Wiggs, my Ann contracted Type 2 ten years ago. She had all the symptoms Desert Joe mentioned:...... "Where u having symptom's? does it run in the family, thirsty, peeing all the time? What was your A1C results?"

Her A1C last week came back 7.5. She has had to count carbs for along time. It runs in her family. She might as well be a vegetarian with her diet. Just this last month, she has gotten an insulin pump, because it was finally determined her pancreas no longer produces any insulin. Before this pump her blood sugar had been on a roller coaster ride, usually crashing in the morning. (dangerously low)

The one thing I remember when she was diagnosed with type 2 was, "get ready for a whole new life style." That part of the equation has been the truth. She quit smoking cigs, I quit coke, she liked it too. She just drinks alittle wine now.

The other part is the stress it puts on you especially. Then it becomes almost a normal daily occurance once you get settled into it.

I hope the best for you. Lots of courage bro.

too hell with all that.....I'm looking into the new enzyme being synthetically produced to represent the "SPIT"...of a Gila monster
they have pancreatic secretion that stabilizes glucose.....and is being adapted in to a synthetic for diabetic's.......no schitt

In 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug exenatide (marketed as Byetta) for the management of type 2 diabetes. It is a synthetic version of a protein, exendin-4, derived from the Gila monster's saliva.[19] In a three-year study with people with type 2 diabetes, exenatide led to healthy sustained glucose levels and progressive weight loss. The effectiveness is due to the fact that the lizard protein is about 50 percent identical to glucagon-like peptide-1 analog (GLP-1), a hormone released from the human digestive tract that helps to regulate insulin and glucagon. The lizard protein remains effective much longer than the human hormone, helping diabetics keep their blood sugar levels under control. Exenatide slows the emptying of the stomach and causes a decrease in appetite, contributing to weight loss.[20] The saliva of the Gila monster contains many chemicals which can be deadly. One of these has been shown to affect memory. Several companies have been researching the abilities of this chemical to help memory loss due to various diseases such as Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and ADHD. Gilatide, derived from exendin-4, has been shown to dramatically heighten memory in a study with mice. Gilatide is likely to be researched further to provide help to Alzheimer’s patients.

Great responses everybody, thanks for your feedback and kind support! Had a very busy day, have no energy to type responses to individual posts, will do that tomorrow. I will say that I have been eating a very low fat diet for about a week now, and my energy levels have increased dramatically. I didn't know how fucked up I was, how low my energy levels were, until I started eating better foods. I'm getting my Mojo back, with a decent dose of Moxie as well.

Thanks again for your concern and support...we lovers of the ganga are a fine brotherhood.

one of the people i grow for is a diabetic and pot helps her nerve pains tremendously but the secret is to control your diet and get exercise and lose the weight that is causing it in so many cases from poor diet.my mom went from type 2 to 1 to non just by food regulating and weight lose to bad she has cancer now .

but it can be reversed in early stages before it gets out of hand even later stages if pancreas is not destroyed that is why the gastric by pass often cures diabetis it cuts the amount of food you can eat and lets your pancrias do its job as a result but its one hell of a risky way to control this disease better taking better care of your self to get it under control or gone completely aloha cls.

It is controllable naturally with large doses of vitamin D-3 (~ 10 gms/day). I buy mine from Swanson Vitamins. Very good prices. Also I started taking 3 relatively new products for a different autoimmune issue. The company's mantra is all disease is the result of auto-immune breakdown. Their products target restoring a strong auto-immune system. The data looks good. To early for me to report as my condition comes and goes. hth

symptoms- real thirsty all the time, no energy, blurry vision, frequent urination. A1C was about 10.5, Dr. said that was very high. Doesn't run in my family as far as I know.

Got a new diet going, starting to exercise. I'm on a med called metformin, it reduces the amount of glucose your liver puts out.

Thanks for your post...I plan on beating this shit.

Dude, I would love to have an elliptical machine in my apartment! I wish I could, but I don't have the room...and man what a pain in the ass those would be whenever I had to move...have to wait until I get something more permanent like a house I own.

I do have a health club membership, though, so I can hop on the machines there.

Hey Des....

Counting carbs has been the traditional method of fighting diabetes, but as always happens, new findings from new studies can change things. There is a book by this guy, Dr. Neal Barnard, and he sites new information from his studies and others, that prove to him the best way to fight diabetes is not by reducing carbs, but by reducing fat in your diet (animal fats are worst, but even vegetable fats need to be reduced).

Here is a link to google books, the entire book is not at this link, though, parts of it are missing:

http://books.google.com/books?id=-T...q=reversing+diabetes&cd=3#v=onepage&q&f=false

If you go to that link and scroll down to the chapter titled, "The Basics Have Changed," it will explain what this new info is.

Basically, he explains that process as this: Diabetes is a disease where the body has too much glucose in the blood stream, and this excess glucose, over time, is very damaging to all the body's components, resulting in all the familiar diabetic conditions. When there is excess glucose in the blood, the body responds by having the pancreas secrete more and more insulin to aid in the body absorbing the glucose. This makes the pancreas work overtime, and given a long enough time in this mode, the pancreas will eventually just stop due to over-work. That's when insulin injections are required.

The body's fuel is glucose, and carbohydrates get converted by the body into glucose. After conversion, this glucose goes into the blood stream, so it can get delivered to all the cells in the body for fuel. This glucose needs some help getting into the cells, though, and that helper is insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. Insulin basically acts like a key...and opens the cells doorways to let the glucose into the cell.

This is why reducing carbs has been the common way to fight diabetes...reducing carbs would seem to reduce the glucose in your blood stream. But, when reviewing the long term results from low-carb diets as a response to diabetes, the results are not good, most folks only slow the progression of the disease and eventually have to deal with all the nastiness of diabetes down the road a bit.

Dr Barnard's new studies show this: When a person has too much fat in their bloodstream (from high fat diets) it eventually works its way into the body's cells. These fat molecules that work their way into the cells cause a problem by clogging up the cell receptors where the insulin "key" fits, thereby negating the ability of the insulin to open the door for the glucose to enter the cell. When the glucose can't get into the cells, it remains floating around in the bloodstream, causing the pancreas to secrete more and more insulin....back to that vicious circle.

He feels that if you drastically reduce the amount of fat in your diet, the insulin will be able to do its job again, and the body's cells will start absorbing the glucose from the blood and naturally take care of the problem itself.

He describes it all much better and completely in his book. I've been on this diet for about a week and feel so much better.

I'm not sure if this low fat diet helps once the pancreas stops functioning, but I think he speaks to that in the book. I hope your wife gets better dude, you should definitely take a look at this book.

Type II diabetes is caused by a poor diet and lack of exercise. Look up the Glycemic index of foods and reduce or eliminate all the high glycemic foods which convert directly to blood sugar. White sugar, white flour, white rice, and glucose-fructose are the true culprits of the Diabetes epidemic.

The recent "epidemic" is mostly caused by people eating mostly processed foods and can't tell the difference between food and candy anymore.
