I just read that the UFC will be streaming 5 prelim fights on YouTube including the Omigawa and Poirier bouts. This is a huge improvement over the Facebook streams and is just another great business choice by the company.

Diaz is now a UFC fighter

Dana White was full of big news today. In addition to the five round UFC main events from now on, he also had a little tidbit to offer regarding Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz. Because he will be taking on Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 137, Diaz gave up his Strikeforce title. MMAWeekly has it:

According to UFC President Dana White, Nick Diaz is now a UFC fighter and has vacated his Strikeforce welterweight belt to get a shot at UFC champion Georges St-Pierre.

White stated that Diaz could go back to Strikeforce at some point in the future if he chose, but for now he is strictly a UFC fighter.

As for the Strikeforce welterweight belt, White said that two fighters from that organization will fight later this year to determine a new champion.

Diaz won the title with a first round stoppage of Marius Zaromskis at Strikeforce: Miami in January 2010. He successfully defended the title three times since then, defeating K.J. Noons, Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, and most recently Paul Daley. While there is no word on who will contend for the newly vacant title, Daley and Tyron Woodley would be the logical favorites in a shallow Strikeforce welterweight division. Santos is scheduled to take on Tarec Saffiedine in late July, but no other meaningful welterweight fights are on the horizon for Strikeforce. This leaves Gilbert Melendez as the sole Cesar Gracie-trained champion in the organization.

Good news :)

Not necessarily true. Same parent company, BUT still on the Strikeforce payroll. I had the opportunity to have a very indepth conversation with a Strikeforce rep a while back, and these very questions came up. His words were to the effect of - Strikeforce is still Strikeforce. They just have a rich uncle now :)

that decision was total B/S!

My stream went down during the first round of the Omigawa fight. I was really hoping to see this one. Just like I predicted though - Omigawa lost to Elkins by points in a fishy one! :rasta:

Interested to find out if Poirier's win over Grispi was as good as it seemed at the time, considering George Roop beat Grispi in the fashion he did recently. Poirier by submission.

UFC plan to add a 125-pound flyweight division
http://mmajunkie.com/news/23944/dana-white-ufc-adding-125-pound-featherweight-division-like-really-soon.mma

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The UFC's fighters will be getting even smaller.

UFC president Dana White today confirmed that the organization is moving forward on its plan to add a 125-pound flyweight division to its existing seven weight classes.

White said it could come "like, really soon," possibly by year's end.

White and other officials have hinted at the weight class over the past few years, first with the since-folded WEC and then with the UFC. Talk of the division really heated up in 2010, when the UFC adopted the WEC's featherweight (145-pound) and bantamweight (135-pound) divisions, but fizzled until recently.

While the organization already has been talking to flyweight fighters about contracts, White said it'll take time to truly build the division and crown a champion.

"We have to get out there; we have to create the division," he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) at today's pre-UFC 131 press conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. "We bring the guys in, sign them and start putting on fights. You figure out who the best is, and you have a title fight."

In fact, while the executive traditionally shies away from tournaments, he said a grand-prix format could be used to determine the UFC's first-ever flyweight champion.

"Maybe," he said. "There's a lot of options we could do."

Currently, a host of Japanese organizations and the California-based Tachi Palace Fights have had a stronghold on the world's top 125-pounders. But with the UFC offering unrivaled paydays and exposure, many of those fighters certainly could be wooed to the octagon.

Additionally, some of the sport's top flyweights could come from the existing UFC roster. While they've discussed their satisfaction with fighting at bantamweight, smaller 135-pounders such as Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson could make for intriguing options for the new weight class.

You also know that from this point forward (at least all contracts for bouts in the UFC this point forward)

All 'Main Event' fights will be 5 rounders whether there is a title or not. :D

I think alot of people will be indifferent about this news, or even dislike it, but realistically the UFC will be incorporating the last relevent (I'd go as far as to say crucial) weight division in the sport and that's tremendous news. It'll take awhile, even years, before people really warm up to the division, but there are alot of decent guys fighting at 125 and tons of potential. Without the UFC's backing though, getting anything MMA related into the mainstream is near impossible, so this is a huge step to finally get the top guys at 125 some exposure and give them some legitimacy and recognition under the UFC name.

I can't wait to start hearing news on which guys they're going to be signing. Alexis Vila is the big one for me and hopefully they snatch up all the top guys fighting in Tachi Palace Fights and Shooto too if those guys could be persuaded. That's all I ask for! :rasta:

I'm not overly hyped for this Strikeforce event as a whole (although it is probably the second best card they've put on this year) but I am VERY excited for Werdum -vs- Overeem II. It would have been nice to see the bracket layed out differently to have them fight each other deeper into the tournament but nothing ever goes as planned in MMA so it was probably best to ensure it happens by putting it in the first round. It's going to be a big time fight with serious stakes in the heavyweight division. In my eyes, whoever wins this fight tomorrow will solidify themselves as a top 3 guy in the division. It's a huge opportunity for both men, but especially for Overeem who could immediately validate all the hype with a decisive win. I'm pulling for Overeem, but straight up I still feel there's no reason to believe that Overeem can go for 15 solid minutes of fighting. Whether or not Werdum can take him deep is a whole 'nother story but if he can, I feel he'll have a great advantage. Great fight, one of the top 10 so far this year in my book in terms of relevancy.

Barnett -vs- Rogers will be interesting too. Barnett seems fired up, legitimately, and I think he's going to try his hardest to go for the kill and make a splash in his return to a relevent promotion in the sport. He's clearly drooling to get back into the UFC and understanding that this is his big ticket, I think he's going to be fireworks throughout this tournament. It sounds crazy, but I think Barnett is going to put his hands all over Brett.

I just hope that they can get the rest of the tournament rolling a little more efficiently and get the second round rolling sooner than later.

wow not the best performance by Alistair, but it got him the Win. he looked gassed afterwards! could barely speak in the postfight interview.

werdum couldn't pull off the sub... I doubt he could beat Fedor again.

Barnett did what he does, I think he may actually take the tournament now.

KJ looked outclassed against Masvidal, but Melendez will present a greater challenge I'm sure.

wilcox is the real deal, too bad he poked himself in the eye.

decent fights... I am excited for Bigfoot vs. Overeem and Sergei vs. Barnett. picking Bigfoot and Barnett ftw

Is anyone else really liking Story -vs- Marquardt this weekend? I seriously think it's one of the 10 best fights put on so far this year.

With a welterweight division depleted of worthy title challengers (Diaz being the biggest exception), a win for either guy here could set up a shot at the title. If GSP beats Diaz the UFC will have to go down the line to Carlos Condit for the next title shot. And I think the winner of Story -vs- Marquardt would be a more appealing option for the fans and the most logical as well. If Story beats Thiago Alves and Nate Marquardt in less than a month then he should be a shoe-in. And if Marquardt can cut this weight cleanly on his first go and be game enough to beat Rick Story then I think that should stand for more than what Condit or Jake Ellenberger or anyone else has done. I think the whole teammate thing could come in to play, but it does seem like some fighters are starting to become more open to the idea, looking at fights as strictly business. Nick Diaz is the clear top contender for the title in my eyes right now so I'm glad he's getting his chance, but the winner of this fight would definitely set up a nice challenger to be waiting on the sidelines. It does seem like Anderson -vs- GSP is a prospect that's slipping further and further away...

Tyson Griffin -vs- Manny Gamburyan better make the main card too. I'm curious to see how Tyson will transition to to featherweight. With a win on Saturday he'd find himself near the top of the division immediately with recent fellow dropper Kenny Florian. Will all the lightweights dropping down to 145 take over the division, or will we continue to see legitimate 145 prospects crawl up the ladder?

And for those who are in deep, Marlon Sandro may not be in the UFC yet, but he is making his Bellator debut tomorrow night where there are atleast a couple of decent opponents that he could face in the future, mainly the two guys fighting for the title next month. Defending champ Joe Warren and challenger Patricio Freire. It's a step in the right direction.

I think it's going to be a great fight. For some reason, I'm always confusing Rick Story and Brian Foster. Both great throwndown kinda guys.

I think both dudes are super motivated to make a statement in the division. Story with his win just a few weeks back, and Marquardt with his first fight at WW.. (Loved seeing him get smashed by Sonnen) :D

It does seem like Anderson -vs- GSP is a prospect that's slipping further and further away...

Agreed - and I'm actually kind of glad for that.. From a marketing perspective, I don't think it's a good idea. You're going to have one of your champs, for a belt or not, lose. I understand the appeal of the fight itself, but you're also going to have one of your champs (for a belt or not) taking a loss, and that affects the psyche.. St. Pierre and Silva don't seem to be guys who would take a fight like that as "just a novelty" and not get wrapped up in whether they won or lost..

Tyson Griffin -vs- Manny Gamburyan better make the main card too. I'm curious to see how Tyson will transition to to featherweight. With a win on Saturday he'd find himself near the top of the division immediately with recent fellow dropper Kenny Florian.

AGREED. Hope Griffin bounces back.. Manny is one of those guys I've just never liked... Although I was bummed to see him get hurt, which lead to Nate Diaz winning TUF. Barf. (Also hated to see Diaz submit Pellegrino, double-birds to boot)

Considering my username, this is probably the best topic to introduce myself

This weekends UFC doesn't really excite me, but it might just be due to the fact that most of the fights don't affect the landscape of contenders - Too many middle-echelon dudes, WEC guys, and weight-class switchers. I'm afraid Marquardt is gonna Marquardt - he's so prone to being shut down by tough wrestlers. Plus, that weight cut must be really tough. Good job by Story though... Talk about shooting for the stars!

Howard-Brown have potential for a crazy brawl, but both guys are really close to getting cut, so there's a risk that at least one of these guys could be fighting more strategically (look for the end-of-the-round-takedown ;))
