is this a good idea i was thinking of pierceing loads of holes in the side of one of my pots to see if it helped get extra air to my roots. can any1 see any issues i might face or is it not worth trying.

Won't your buckets leak when you water your plants if they are full of holes?

instead of drilling or puncturing (or shooting) holes...
use a heat gun (its useful in hash making too) and heat the sides of the plastic container. with a philips screwdriver, push the hot plastic in slowly until the screwdriver comes out the other side. this way you will get an indentation very similar to the airpots. you can do some going outwards as well (from inside-out).

you can drill a hole 2 inches from the bottom of a bucket and combine it with the above method so you may have hempy meets airpot.

i can see heating the pot will be loads better it will stop soil falling out, very thoughtful thankyou. so have you tried this mg75?

im doing my first hempy atm she is 3 weeks in flower and doing really well, i was worried cos i put to much vermiculite in but its all worked out fine. im not sure the yields are much better but it sure beats carrying soil in and out, can i re use my hempy bucket if i was the mix in it and get the roots out?

The next time I prepare a tote for growing I'm going to drill or melt 2" holes around the sides and line the inside with vinyl window screening.

Fiberglass cloth, screen cloth, rubberized shelf liner. Fiberglass is less prone to having roots grow through and holds up well though it may need a few holes itself.
Melting is sometimes easier and won't crack some containers like drilling can. It leaves a little indention on the inside which is generally good. Heat up a cheap hole bit without the drill.

I use thin coco mat for a liner.

with the right cone shaped iron and a drill you could probably melt yourself up a fairly convincing airpot/smartpot :D
