Welcome!

Board out the loft, or at least some of it.
Use a carbon filter.
Duct your air from inside the house in the winter. May be a good idea in the summer, too, as it will get hot up there and the air in the house will be cooler...I take my air from the top of a built-in wardrobe in one of the bedrooms.
Check the link in my signature to see my loft-grow.
Peace.

All I can saw is the above are good pointers.. Never grown in the loft but when I was laying insulation last autumn I was surprised how hot it gets in a 'cold roof' on a hot sunny day.

Might also be worth installing a dedicated curcit to the loft or running a spur if possable from the upstairs ring (30amp). Tapping into the lighting ring would be a sure way of starting a fire through over heating the wires plus they tend not to be eathed.

I'm running a tiny op for myself, 150W HPS in an old wardrobe in the loft. Even with that and nice circulation the temps in the day get real hot with the lights on, so I run my lights from 6pm to 6am, that way I am keeping the temps sorta even. The house is only about 4 years old, so is well insulated.

I am growing Honey B at the moment which is sativa strain and takes ages to flower, but I've just flushed so in a couple of weeks I can start to think about what I want to upgrade in my wardrobe, seeing as its very basic at present. When I'm flush I'll hook up a Lumatek 400W HPS with air cooled hood <3

I have a house spider who lives next to it called Graham as well. Also keep your electronics neat and tidy. Personally for me I haven't had any smell issues but I'm only growing the one plant at the moment. If I go up there the smell comes down, but with the loft door closed it insulates the smell very well so I only venture up in the evenings when we have no one over.

Good luck.

Thanks for posting this. I tapped into the lighting ring, and have been running 1 desk fan, 4 CFL's, a 150W HPS and 2x120mm PC fans off it. I've not had any problems, but I didn't realise that the lights might not be earthed.

Im not a electrian but now a bit about wiring.

Lighting rings tend to be 5amp to run this safely you should only ever run it at 80% capacity.

Amp X Volts = Watts

5amp x 240V = 1200 / 100 x 80 = 960 watts
although that dosen't mean you can wire a 400W in there even if you do earth it.

As for not having an earth you should install one as soon as you get the chance.. i THINK (might not be right) you can just find your houses' earth and tap into that.

If like me you have had a new combi boiler installed you may have a Spare 15amp circuit idle where the immersion heater (big copper tank) was, this COULD (your house insurance would be viod) be reclaimed and extended into the loft. But you MUST use the correct gage cable.. 15amp tends not to be sold in Wicks etc.. but a bit over over kill with 30amp wire wouldn't hurt. you can also pick it wilkinson by the metre.

Remember turn of the power to the house before going anywhere near the electrics.

As i've said im not a Electrian so if anyone want to correct anything i might be wrong on please do.

Thanks Eggy, I have an electronics for dummies tucked away somewhere here... I'll dig it out and see if I can understand the equation a bit better. Want to be safe. I'm always checking it out for overheating but knowing that I'm well within the limits will help

Cheers

Assuming you use energy saving bulbs though out the house you should be more than ok.. But do check you have your setup earthed..
Some of my lights in the house are some arn't but i've got a fairly old house.

Temps etc

1. Day time excursions into the attic are less suspicious than those at night
2. Times in winter are COOL. but temps in summer are HOT!!
3. In winter you might be the only house without snow on the roof !!
4. Hydro pebbles are noisy at night in classic semi-detached houses
5. So is banging your head on a hot lamp and shouting "F*^%$% H&^*!!!!!
6. Get a good ladder! (check it regular) Most accidents are in the home!
7. Make sure the floorboards are stable/secure. (we had to crawl gangplanks once,, before making them move the veg room to a more stable location!! numpties!)
8. OVER WATERING can be a real issue when it's UP above!!!!
9. Same goes for NFT tanks and timers (once KD's roof fell in!!! lol)
10. Sometimes if the co-pilot gets bored they switch on the thermal imagining and see if any rooftops glow on the way home!! But that's rare and if so they are looking for factories, more than single lamps in attics
:D

Hope this helps

Thanks for responses guys.

I have a good and well trusted friend who has been growing for years helping me out with the setup/grow. But he has not done one in the attic.

Cheers guys

insulate the whole thing, not just part of the area,

paint dusty bare brickwork in unused areas with PVA glue solution to seal them

wickes do thick tongue and groove polystyrene panels, do the job properly and enjoy being the last roof in the street to melt the snow... exhaust out of the place they expect hot air... the chimney...

plumb in water tap and a drain for your use up in the loft, a sink, whatever you need before you plant out

fire extinguisher, as others said

security camera/monitor, so you can see what is going on outside while you are up there.

Line the entire grow area with pondliner, even better if it automatically drains. That way, WHEN you flood the growroom you do not bring down ceilings or have leaks filling up neighbours houses....

and wire in a new ring main as others have said.
