Alrighty then...Hold on to yer straw hats(or boonies). Looks like we got a boomer comin this weekend in the 530... Weather forecast shows a current severe weather alert and 'bout 4 days of some thunder, lightning and off n on wet stuff. The last weather pattern dropped some showers and I opened the greenhouse to let the girls get a taste. Man, I swear they grew a foot in 2 days after! LOL There is something about a lite spring rain on med plants that gets me all giddy inside...CC

Sun mornin and the rain is here. Looks like what the indians refer to as a "Navajo Rain". Gentle, nurturing, pleasing to the earth. Not the "frog-stranglers" I used to see while living in Arizona where a storm would dump 2 feet in five minutes and wash away a herd of full sized cows...

So with a little down time, I thought I would post some pics of 'The Big Dig" LOL. I swear, Ive worked harder gettin my holes in but I cant really remember when. It's ironic, back in the day and out in the woods, ya dug a 1 ft hole with an army shovel, jammed the plant in and moved quickly on to the next. Now, with Prop215 and the ability to grow on your own property legally, a fella can dig for days...and days! LOL

When I say the 'Big Dig", I aint foolin...If ya try this at home, you got no more good sense than me...lol

It was either separate and reuse the dirt and spread the rock, or try to haul all the dirt & rocks out of the canyon by hand. All I would have needed was an ore cart on tracks...

That said, dedication and determination are respectable traits in any endeavor, but when you mix in stubbornness, what you got comin is what you got comin...I said that

So, the diggin and siftin mostly behind me, a few more pics of preppin the holes. The landscape matting was chosen because the sides of the holes were not going to be compatible with the root systems. I left the bottoms open because the tap root will hit bedrock with or without a bottom liner.

Sup CC - yea the rain is nice and soft, and I'm loving havin an excuse to sit around inside all day hah!

Had to rush into town late yesterday to get some hoop houses thrown up - was racing against time and they came out pretty shoddy - nothing like your tear-down setup, which I really like!

No collapses though and it appears the ladies had warm temps throughout the night. Hope you're enjoying the weekend CC!

you should be ashamed, deforesting such a beautiful area

is this serious? its his land brother, and a small patch at that. this isnt the amazon..... you seriously need to stop smoking so much. you were sitting in a house/apt/condo that had land cleared for building said house/apt/condo as you typed that...... you should let those endorphins recover a bit, no?

AWESOME WORK CC! what a read, i gotta go back to page 2 or 3 now.. where ever i was when i got sidetracked by this idiot. i am a couple years off from having a beautiful secluded piece of land in the mountains ;-) and i cant wait brother. there is nothing better than working with your hands in the great out doors. keep it up, cant wait to see how the season turns out for ya!

CC- clones lack a tap root. only plants from seed will grow a taproot.

that's why you'll hear people recommend not going any deeper than 24" and focusing on increasing the width of beds, assuming you are working with clones...

not trying to prove you wrong, just looking out my friend.

To best sum it up,
"Yes, 6'x18". The goal here for me is to tend well the soil depth in the area from about 1"-12" deep, this is where maximum potential (Oxygen levels, temp etc) lies regarding a productive soil. While tending this depth correctly (in regards to irrigation frequency), roots deeper than 24" would likely get culled off due to insufficient Oxygen levels anyway - so 18" soil depth is about right." ^ endless wealth of outdoor knowledge and instruction from northern california growers pulling 6-12lb Goliaths. >95% of these guys are running beds no deeper than 24".

keep up the good work, your definitely putting your hours in !

Hey Butte...Ive read T Hills stuff. Really great info! The man has my admiration and I certainly have no reasons or basis to disagree. A consideration for me is: Growing the monsters and it has never been part of my plan.

I think the 'Goliaths" are more maintenance prone including the most important thing: they are harder to conceal and compare it to: Do you want to go out hiking and enjoy the day or do you want to climb Mt Everest...? sort of...lol. That said, 6 ft in diameter holes might be overkill for me.

Like I said, it's a first year garden...Grow and tweek, grow and tweek...CC

CC- yes, i agree, never was my intention in convincing you to go big or bigger.

your obviously a hard worker, and it'll show come harvest no doubt.

a lot of lazy people try growing their own medicine, it never works out how they thought to say the least. people don't realize it takes work and motivation to be successful.

crazy weather today

Hey Butte...We be on the same page pard...And you bring up some good points. I think it's all about individual comfort level. First, in order to grow the big ones, you have to have a reasonable knowledge of HOW to grow the big ones. Following that, one needs to understand the maintenance (work) involved, pay attention to the concealment factor and last, have a practical and realistic plan for proper harvest/curing of such a large yield to avoid product waste ie: too much volume to trim and cure properly. For me personally, I understand the work involved but other than that, the remainder of "goliath growin" requirements puts me out of the runnin...

I think a common mistake a lot of folks make is they get outside that comfort level. They think bigger and or more is better and the next thing they know, plant management-quality/quantity suffers. Or they can become victims of their own success. A simple example would be if you only have a 6ft fence, but your plants go to 10ft, I'm sorry but you have a visibility problem and youre putting your entire project in jeopardy. So, bigger isnt always better.

And I dont know about the lazy people part other than I do know it's definitely not something anyone should get into if they arent ready to not only put in the hard work and dedication, but also be willing to except the associated failures, learn from them and keep going. For sure, it isnt easy and it sure doesnt happen overnite and IMO, it definitely isnt going to magically happen in just one glorious summer.

Once a new grower discovers it isnt as easy as it looks and they get slapped around a little, they have a choice: "Cut n run or stay with it til ya get it going your way..." The ones who stay with it become growers 'cause it's in their heart to just do it, those who dont or can't, go back to the dispensary...CC

Lol bro...A man should have at least one vision in his life, if for no other reason than to see what is possible...Me, I get em 'bout once a minute: The trick is to recognize the difference between a vision and a dream and more important, how to turn either one into a reality...LOL Thanks man!
