High Desert Grow 2011

Hey, I will be growing Parvati and Mazar-i-Sharif from RSC this year. Even though I have read and learned a lot on these forums I sadly can't put most of it to use or go on a larger scale as I am very limited in resources (especially water) in this guerrilla grow, some day though... :dance013:I will be using 5 gallon pots with a decent potting soil, hoping for a few ounces. Not expecting much feedback, more of a log for me, welcome to post though.

I just popped some beans for fun to see how they grow, won't pop my official beans until about May 10th or so though.

For now here is a pic of a rather large poppy plant for my area and a native lilac (?) apparently, smelled like bubble gum. I will get a better camera once started. :tiphat:

Subscribed for interest! Looks like the poppy native to the Mojave, at least I don't think I've ever seen any of that when I was trompsing around the Great Basin.

Cheers man. :tiphat:

Yes, it is the California Poppy, I am just outside and South of the "true" Mojave desert and in the mountains so to speak.

I'll post a pic of my test babies in a few days, the leaves on one is curled like nute burn, they are in Miracle-Gro, my bagseeds sprouted fine so maybe these are just nute sensitive.

Started my official seeds, should be coming up soon.

Also bought those Soil Moist water crystals and a bag of worm castings (for some other plants too) at an old and established nursery today, they actually had a whole little corner of the store directed towards cannabis growing, pretty cool. Lot of those name brand nutrients and some hydro gear.

Hi Androz,

I am growing out some Nanda Devi from RSC this year, it's my first outdoor grow and it will be interesting to compare 58n in the Scottish highlands to 34n in the Mojave desert!

Good luck and happy growing :tiphat:

Hi Hoots, very nice to have you on board, especially someone from across the pond in Scotland.

Good luck and be sure to post updates on that Nanda, I'm sure it will do good considering it comes from a fairly wet and cold region.

Here's my Mazar, not quite sure how old, pretty young. Doing fine in 86 degrees sunny weather, weather looks fine from here on out but less than a week ago we had steady 40mph winds. :tiphat:

Hi, thanks a ton for stopping in and for the message. Yeah the rabbits are a pain but I spread a little bit of this dried blood meal and chili pepper mix around my area along with pissing around the spot, hopefully they leave me alone.

The water is really a bummer, I'll only be having 2 plants this summer. :( Practice I suppose until I can go on a larger scale, medical or guerrilla, some day lad, some day...

Do you happen to be around the Antelope Valley?

I thought that might be where you are I could tell by the Poppy's.
I'm in the Victor Valley area.
i think the rabbit's will giggle at you, chicken wire might be your best bet IMHO
But I really wish you Good Luck :tiphat:

If I were in a area with lots of heat and a water problem. I would get them out of the pots and into the ground. Them tap roots will search out moisture and with five gallon pots and upper 90s in temps you will most likely be watering daily. And use those other bushes to your advantage by placing your plants where they get some shade. I think 8 hours of full sun each day should work. Just my thoughts.

Cheers, yeah I have some chickenwire I will put to use.

I thought about planting in ground but I figure the native plants would suck out some of the moisture and the soil here drains pretty fast. I don't think there is much moisture in the ground (maybe several plus feet) especially by the dead of summer without a drop of rain for 3 months. So hopefully my soil mix retains some water nicely and I will probably put plastic bags underneath it when the evaporation gets really bad to try and save every drop. The pots are buried so that should help a little with taking heat stress away from the roots. :dance013:

edit: I do have them near some shade so that will help, along with providing a natural wind block. Cheers.
