Overcomplicating a grow........ Or: K.I.S.S.!

Been reading threads. ;)

Been growing for a while myself, in Cali when I used to live there and now on my island where I live now. (see link in signature)

I am more the KISS type of guy (Keep It Stupid Simple) when it comes to growing.

So why this thread?

Because I honestly don't get why growers buy all these products making things complicated and costly.

Look @ my grow (signature on very bottom) which is finished now.

All I have used was ProMix HP (can be substituted with pretty much anything else) and ONE fertilizer.
OK one for vegging and one for flowering and the occasional shot of CalMag.

The fertilizer I have used this time was Jack's Classic® "All Purpose" and "Blossom Booster".
Everything very very affordable.

Now...I am in no way saying you gotta grow the way I do and use the same products...but it certainly would save many of you plenty headaches and money.

And if someone claims "But those links above don't show organic products" - yes you are right.

But guess what?
NONE of the people consuming what I grow (and I mean ZERO) have been able to tell the difference.

PS: Works for both indoor AND outdoor.

PPS: Those products I mentioned are underlined with links to them.

I K.I.S.S them till my tongue hurts, They grow like a weed(pun). I've only been on the IC since Dec but it seems like WAY to many people Love there plants to death IMHO
I use MaxiBloom in a Hempy beer cup, here's proof KISSing them works.

How's the fishing been? Good I hope

I've always been about what is the simplest or most convenient.

I believe that as your comprehension grows on a particular subject (anything really), simple follows the same curve. It's subjective and relative to your mastery of the subject. I also feel your personality and interests come into play. Some people really enjoy tinkering and constant fiddling, some do not. Which hemisphere of the brain is your most dominate? I happen to be very right brained. Some people feel stagnant doing things one way for very long and others don't adapt to change as well.

Everyone is doing their thing and it's a beautiful thing.
:D

Much Peace and happy four twenty everyone.

I'm starting my first grow and was planning on keeping it simple.

I was planning on using only Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil with Fox Farm Big Bloom organic nutrients, but now I'm not sure if that will be enough. Do I need a different nutrients for the vegging and flowering? Or will FFBB work for both?

Many years ago my 1st grow after many years of not growing was by using FF nutes (same one you listed + FF "Grow Big") and I had awesome results (2.5oz/plant @ ~3 weeks of vegging outdoors, started in late August hence the short vegging time) + I used ProMix BX, 15% Perlite. (HP has 30% Perlite in it).
Realizing how expensive FF nutes were (approx. $45/Gallon) next year I used "Jack's Classic" fertilizers instead ("All Purpose" & "Bloom")with awesome results as well. Where I used to live back then a 40lb bag of Jack's Classic cost $45.

Your choice of soil and fert is great, however it is expensive.

So if I were you (of course it is up to you ;) ) I would definitely scrap the FF soil unless you live in the Pacific NW where a bag of that stuff goes for about $5 something, on the east coast that same bag is roughly around $25 since the shipping is driving up the price.

You did not state if you are planning on growing in- or outdoors but especially if you're going to grow outdoors keep in mind the FF soil will be leeched out by the plant @ around 6 weeks so you might as well use something from the start on which has no to little nutes in it > A ProMix product.

So yeah your choice of products will work fine but you CAN do it different and more cost effective.

:tiphat:

PS:
Look @ my grow in my signature line, I pulled 8lbs+ JUST with ProMix HP and the two ferts I listed in my OP.

That's 8lbs+ DRY and trimmed! :groupwave:

Always start with KISS. Then if you feel you need more or have a problem there is a lot LESS variables. Then never add more than one variable per crop to see what individual results are. You don't know if its the liquid kharma or the molasses that helped you on the last run because you used both.

@HighDesertJoe - WOW! That lil monster is in a beer cup? Guess those that say container size doesnt matter are right?!? Thinking about downsizing now...lol.

Oh yea and I think someone wants to know, "strainhunter, what amounts of the All-Purpose and Bloom Booster did you use?" ROFL!

Both equal 1TBS (12 or 13 grams per gallon), every other watering.

Edit/PS: Get one of them measuring spoons saying 1TBS and take it from there. I used the weight measure because it was more accurate and quicker.

Hi strainhunter, I myself am running jack's pro and was thinking about using the blossom booster.... thanks to you i'll look into using the blossom booster!

Do you use both the jack's and blossom booster during flowering?

Thanks

I'll jump in on the non-KISS side of things.

Like, during week 3 of flowering I might run:
4ml/gallon Canna Coco A+B (primary macro system)
4ml/gallon Cal-Mag Plus (Calcium/Magnesium/Iron supp)
8ml/gallon Liquid Karma (Negotiable, but it helps keep growth healthy)
3ml/gallon Pro-Tekt (silicon supplement for strong stems)
1.5ml/gallon Hydroplex (PK supplement to balance out Macro ratios)
1ml/gallon Snow Storm Ultra (Resin enhancer)
50ppm of Big Bud (dry) (PK supplement to balance out Macro ratios)
5ml/gallon Bud Candy (Carbo/Mag supplement and resin enhancer)

Each product has a purpose in the grow room.

The concept is to know what you are doing. Most people keep it KISS because they are simply incapable of translating percentages on the packaging into the guaranteed ppms each will provide. By utilizing very low levels of each nutrient I keep costs low (because despite using several products I don't use much more than 25ml/gallon or the same as you would using CNS 17 Bloom) while still achieving the right concentration of elements to get the right EC of the solution

I think if you need to keep it KISS then I suppose you can go right on ahead and do it. I think CNS 17 Coco/Soil is a fantastic system, cheap, simple, and effective, and I use it myself also.

I just don't think there is a perfect nutrient out there for every strain and every phenotype. I run multiple strains and without a few extra supplements I would be completely unable to alter my ratios. Eternally stuck with whatever my KISS nutrient ratio is. So, for me, I need a little malleability to ensure that each plant can get the elements they need at the varying stages of growth.

WOW!

I mean everyone gotta do what makes them happy but man maybe YOU can explain to me why you put all that in your grow if you can get the same yield/quality a much simpler way.

I have been growing for quiet a while now (when I lived in the US in Cali in and outdoors and nowadays: see my signature) and I have tried all sorts of ways (such as similar to yours) and yes I have grown plenty different strains over the years however K.I.S.S. is really all it takes.

My guess - you don't even need a veg fert. Just keep transplanting every couple of weeks and the FFOF should carry you through.

And if someone claims "But those links above don't show organic products" - yes you are right.

But organic can also be very simple because once you have your soil setup you don't need to do any metering (EC, ppm, or pH), any mixing, or any measuring; All you need to do is water, sprinkle some dry shit on top every so often, and let it grow.
