A perfect cure every time

no actually i thought the opposite would be true(or hoped)
I mean the smell in the jar, not the potential smell of the weed. :)
When you first are handling the weed a lot you're breaking a lot of trichomes and sending the smell of volatile terpenes into the air.

Over time the smell from the broken trichomes fades until you break more but because you're storing it in a jar and not touching it hardly at all in later stages of curing then the smell will be more muted because there are no freshly broken trichomes to spread it.

Weed in a baggie in your pocket smells strong because the trichomes are breaking all the time and the temperature is so warm. In a jar undisturbed not so much.

Indulge me for a minute. Apparently some folks don't think that I'm me, so I'll just throw a little wave:

I'm doing this right now with 3 1.2 gallon jars.

I have learned how to do this without hygrometers, but the hygrometers really take the guess out of it.

thanks simon!

I have been curing in a cabinet in the basement that gets cold air from the crawl space.
Curing in lower temps can make up a bit for low RH.

I am almost in the cure zone. This really takes the guess work out of it.

Trying this method for the first time

Trying this method for the first time

I've only had one previous cure and it failed badly. The dreaded hay smell etc... After that I found this thread for my current cure and the results have been nothing short of amazing. Some credit has to be given to the actual grow, of course, but the cure and this method in particular really bring it all together and put the finishing touch on it. This takes the results from mediocre to premium quality.

Simon - thank you :thank you: for the simple and extremely effective method.

I'm so stoned...:rasta:

ive been told to water plants during lights on. next day turn off lights so a 24-36 hour dark period. then defoliate and move into separate room at 50-55f at 30-35 humidity for about one day max. day 2: 55-65f and 55-60% humidity for slow dry and jar when needed.

air flow is the key here. constant outside cold air coming in via hepa filter and carbon filter exhaust. AC unit as well a couple more fans positioned but NO fans are directly on buds. Once drying i usually take the smaller nugs/skinnier branches off before top cola as the top does not snap or nearly snap.

im curious about the freezer cure but havnt tried it yet may try a few ways with some test controls

i found that once you jar it is a good idea to vacuum seal ur jars (slowly or your jars will break, found tthis out by experience) and put it in a wine cooler at 50 degrees with humidity at 60%. i burped it twice a day which is a bitch because needs to be resealed twice but it actually produces a much better smell and taste compared to the jars that were burped twice a day but not in the wine cooler at 60% humid and 70-78 degrees (both in dark)

any critiques?

i always find my buds dry way to fast like 5 days and they are done.... not normally bothered but as i have made the effort with carbo load, ripen and chaching i would like to dry this the best way possible...

i have my Dehumidifier set to 60% its currently 65% top and 56% bottom of room/net.... room temp 66 top and 68 bottom of room /net... "but it is night" thermostatically controlled heater kicks on and off at around 70

how does this sound?

Because the terpenes are extremely volatile, smell of herb will decrease over time ,regardless of how stored. I have herb that has been in jars for two years, and it has almost no smell, as most of the terpenes have already gone. If you break up a bud right under your nose, you will get some smell, but nothing compared to when herb is "fresh".

@ laylow:

hey dude, i dont post on this thread very often, but have been subscribed since early 2010, and have been using the Calibers for over 15 months. very experienced w different humidity% and differing temps.

i find that the best humidity to be @ is 55-58, with temps between 62-68. that will give you a 8-10 day drying period, if you wanna jar right before the stems snap. a 5 day dry is most definitely too fast.

i follow Soma's method of drying/curing/trimming for the HighTimesCannibusCup;

i have a 2 x 4 area sectioned of w parts of an old tent and some outdoor fabric that is black/opaque but fully breathable. inside there are two CALIBER III's, mounted at eye level and at the lowest point there is any bud hanging. there is a 2600 can filter, hooked up to a 4'' duct booster fan, just enough to scrub and move some air around. i exhaust into the flower room, which is also scrubbed. thanks to negative pressure, there is no stink in the living area.

personally, i like to dry whole branches, only plucking off the fan leaves that i can see the stem of/on the leaf. hang the whole harvest like that on a folding laundry rack, can fit 2 lb's on the rack. i have been drying for at least 12 days these last few rounds, so the plant can pretty much be trimmed w/ my fingers. all stems, even the largest(1/4") snap, and the buds will feel sticky but dry-overdry.

once my girl uses her little fingers to trim most of the fans to powder/dust, i come through w/ some fiskars and touch up the buds. put the buds in one of many sealed 1/4lb cookie jars overnight w a CaliberIII, and the buds i wake up too are absolutely obsurd.

the humidity inside the jar after 8-12 hrs is never below 55%, and seldom above 58%. if above 60%, i will leave the top of the jar open, close after 2-4 hrs. this herb is ready to smoke/sell/store immediately. as long as you grow good weed, no cure is neccesary. this method i learned a fews years ago, tested it with a few plants here and there, because up until last march, i always trimmed wet.

super sticky, a bud will stick to one finger and come off the table like it was duct tape to my finger. the kind of perfect pot that u cant break up w yer fingers, cause its so sticky. grinds perfectly in a grinder. when rolled in a joint, the grined up bud will take the shape of the joint, rolls effortlessly, burns like a cig.

to wrap it up, damn, this Chemdog be having me rambling, rambling, rambling. the longer the dry, the less need for a cure. but yeah, your humidity%/temps are spot on.

i love my hygrometers. i gave one to two of the peeps i link up, and instruct them to tell me if it ever goes above 62%.

and to end my post, a warning. trimming the buds after 12 days drying will stink about 500% worse(better.lol), than trimming wet. and your fingers will get about 3-4 millimeters of hash on them. wohooo!!!!!

A few questions for clarification...

after your bud is jarred up and in the cure zone of 55-65%, is it best to cut the buds off the stem or keep them on?

Since there's some residual moisture in the stems would removing them lower the RH in the jar drying out the buds faster? I guess I want to know if keeping the buds on the stem will preserve the bud longer? Hope that makes sense.
