What's new

320 Watts CFL

Hi guys.
This will be my second grow here on ICMAG. I'm a hobby grower with a very limited budget. I'm less concerned with perfection than I am with enjoying myself. That said, I do try hard to grow good happy plants. Give me advice!

Redgreenery, Verdantgreen, Nicoli, Blynx, and Drbudgreengenes have been especially inspirational for my grow and style of growing. Lurkers like me learn a TON from you guys. Hats off.

I'll start with a little information about my cabinet. Its made from plywood and 2x4's. It stands 44 inches tall by 29 inches wide and 16 inches deep. Right now I'm running 8 40 watt, 2700K CFL bulbs. I've got a custom made hood with two computer fans pulling air past the bulbs. I ordered a piece of glass to fit the hood and I dropped my temperatures by about 15 degrees. The glass stays cool to the touch and most of the hot air gets pushed up and away from my plants.

Here you can see my bulb setup, and where one of the bulbs melted the panda film before I got the glass partition.

So here's the background on my plants. This grow I'm running 6 bagseeds and one clone. A friend gave me seeds and told me they're "avalanche" and I've seen another friend grow some out. They're good plants and good smoke, but they've got a tendency to herm. All six of the seeds I germinated have pistils on them. Good luck for me. Hopefully they don't herm on me. The seeds were germinated on 11/24/10 and #7 a week later.

My biggest plant is from clone. I'm pretty sure it's Mendocino Madness, but I don't actually know yet. When I received it, it was mixed in with two other clones. In my haste, I lost track of which was which. So. Its either a "purple voodoo" or "mendocino madness". At any rate, it was purchased at a dispensary and I expect quality genetics. PV is supposed to purple up near the end of the grow, so I should know by the time I'm finished. I'm just going to refer to it as the mendo, until I see evidence otherwise.

These plants are on day 17 of flower.

Here are all 7 plants, out of the cabinet.

Avalanche plants # 2 5 3 4 6 7(#1 didn't germ, #5 and #3 are in the same container.)

Here's the clone of the Mendo that I started with.

And how it looks now.

These plants are growing in Miracle Grow. Next time I'll get some better soil (and nutes). I've been feeding them with molasses, Eleanor's VF11 (anyone else tried this?), and occasionally blood meal.
#3 and #5 are in miracle grow organic, amended with blood meal.

I haven't really had too many problems so far. The plants probably look kind of small to you guys; It was a slow veg and I had a lot of other stuff I was working on so I really didn't care for these plants all that much. I LST'd all of the plants, but on some of them, the ties kept coming undone (AV: 2,4,6). This was just a hassle and half the time I just let them go. They've got kind of a funky structure because of it.

That's all I can think of. I'll continue to update with pictures and questions.

Take it easy everyone.

Day 24

I think my mendo has problems. Growth may just seem slower cause the stretch is done, but I think it might have a nute lockout, ph problems, or too much heat. Gonna give it a few more days before I start messing with it though.

I'm also pretty sure I have at least 2 hermaphrodites. I'm just gonna grow them anyways, pick off the nanners and hope for the best.

Hey guys. Still moving along. Struggling a little. I've got a ton of fungus gnats. I'll probably get some dunks, but I might just wait till these finish and just make sure my next setup is kosher. I'm considering rebuilding my cab but I'm not sure yet. The plants are just starting to fill out. I'm at day 39 of 12/12 and they've probably got 2 or 3 weeks left.

A clone I took a lonnnng time ago. I've treated it terribly and have just recently started taking care of it. Vegging along happily now.

Here's the MM. I let my plants get seriously dry once and so the mendo suffered quite a bit. I think its also struggling with PH. Its getting really yellow and I think maybe a little too soon, but maybe this plant's just fast like that.
I would have really liked to see those colas fill out completely. I attribute this to soil and stress. Next time I'll be better prepared and I think those will fill out completely. (You can see what I mean in the next picture too.)

And one from the left.

Here's the top cola on my slowest grower. They were flipped to flower at the same time, they're the same seeds, and they're in the same soil. This pheno's just taking its time. Probably wont turn in to anything special either.

Last night my friend gave me a couple of plants from feminized seed that he thinks will be hermaphrodites. I still think its too early to tell, but I'm not going to complain about free plants. I will complain about the size though, I had to do some terrible things to squeeze these plants in to my "veg cab".

Hey Dude,

Im wondering about the suspected pH problems. Do you test your water? Do you add lime to you soil? Not adding lime to the soil can have that yellowing cracking effect over time. Basically the soil pH gets out of whack without the lime as a buffer for acid. You trees don't look to bad though, it would get worse with time and you'd start seeing big fan leaves drying out like from a N deficiency.

Good luck

skullz: you're probably right. I didn't add any lime and I haven't been paying attention to PH. I intend to get some proper soil for the next set.

Sumbolt: I only did that stuff yesterday. They're still alive. They've adjusted towards the light and there doesn't seem to be any wilting or other obvious problems. I think they'll make a full recovery. If they are in fact herms, they'll definitely show it now. That was a lot of stress. (I also tore a bunch of roots off so I could fit them in a smaller container.)

Nice setup. I just finished up a similar 260w cfl grow. Got 2.5 oz's from 3 lst'd plants. You'll probably get double that at least. Looks go so far.

Ha. Thanks Marn. The pictures must be deceiving, I'm only expecting 2 or less. That said, next run I expect something more like 4-8 oz.

Day 47

Day 47

I think I'm going to harvest the MM this weekend. The calyx's have swelled, unlike the other plants, and the pistils are turning orange. That will be roughly 50 days. Anyone think that would be a sin?
I want to clear up some room for those two widows and I think the plant is about done. I dont have a jewelers loup, but I'll see if I can get a hold of one. If I cant, I'll probably just take it down anyways.

Supercropped plants are doing alright. (They're white widow)

Two of the avalanches. They're my in-n-out trees. ha.

Hard 2 tell the size of ur plants from the pics but i think u will get more than 2 zips Dude! Props for using CFL's i think they r def under rated. I got myself one of those 65w monsters from lowes for like 17 bucks.

Lots of progress.

Lots of progress.

I believe this grow the soil was definitely my bottleneck. So this time I gathered up the materials for an organic grow with quality soil. I'm real excited to see what I can do with organic healthy soil instead of screwing around with miracle grow. Not pictured is a bag of fox farm and some dolomite lime that I used to cut it.

Here is a clone of the MM that I took more than a month ago and treated poorly. I actually flowered it for a week when it was about an inch tall, just cause I didn't have anywhere to keep it alive, aside from my flower cab. Then I made a veg cab and threw it in. It's revegging right now, but the structure is incredible. It had 11 nodes before it was 3 inches tall. I think it's going to do great things when I transplant it and then switch to flower.
picture.php

Here's one of the branches on my MM. I love the structure, I think I did a good job tying it, but I wish those had all filled in to regular colas. I'll be real sad if they dont chunk up better on my next run.
picture.php

Here's one of the top nugs. I like this picture.
picture.php

MM all chopped and ready to dry. This was day 60. I imagine it could have gone a week or two longer for the narcotic aspect of the high, but I was ready to chop it today and I've been satisfied with the tasters I've taken so far. I'm guessing it will be around a half ounce all said and done, though I'm really inexperienced with eyeballing it. Anyone else wish to guess? The best way to describe the smell in my opinion is freshly cut cantaloupe.
picture.php

I might transplant those widows before I switch them to the flower cab. Even if I dont transplant, I'll be switching them tomorrow to allow room for the small clones to keep vegging up while the avalanche finishes. I'll update again soon.

Take it easy ICM.

Greensmoke, thanks for being optimistic. I smoke about an ounce a month, or 300 dollars each month. If I can cover that I'll be satisfied. I think my pictures are a little decieving because a lot of those buds that are visible wont turn in to much. I didn't have a very even canopy this run and so a lot of those buds are starving for light. But damn, I wasn't expecting to get 6/6 females and so those plants were basically vegged bigger than they should have been for the space. I just couldn't bring myself to throw away females after the time I spent vegging them. I wish I had gotten rid of that slow one though. Its a terrible pheno.

This one threw out a ton of pistils in the last week. Hopefully it will fatten up a little bit more and finish soon. I'm eager to cut it.

This one didnt get as much light. It has hardly any calyxes, but super crystally leaves.
picture.php

I think this makes day seven of 12/12 for these two.

Keepin' on.

Keepin' on.

A lot has happened for these plants. I'll post some updates later.
Here's one pic of the group for now.
