Seedling Watering Protocol?

Straight EWC? Seems hot. Or EWC Tea?

This is screwing with my schedule since I had planned to have a relatively short veg period. I'm growing Super Silver Haze and I've read to not veg past three weeks or they will be unmanageable in a scrog. I should have planned better.

I have a micro-grow.

I had planned these starter flats for a week, then the one gallon containers for 2 more weeks, then sex at 12/12, then move to 5 gallon pails to finish.

Ugh

take those timelines with a grain of reality. if you have bad conditions at the beginning, it adds time to your veg period.

proper Ewc won't burn seedlings.

Thanks Mad L. With the help of the collective here, I'm thinking my seedlings really are coming along better than I expected. So not thinking there was a bad condition at the beginning.

I have bagged EWC. That works for a top dressing? After maybe a week? To get it through to the end of week #2?

what kind? I can only vouch for the good stuff.

I just do it when I feel compelled to. its definitely not in the first week. but I like to do it at some point before transplanting. not much goes on in the first week. I just do a pinch or two in flats.

note: it's not necessary. at all. if you wanna play it safe you could skip it. i'm just doing it for the beneficial microbes etc.

top dressing EWC is as natural as socks when wearing boots.

can't vouch for bagged stuff, but from the bin, it is just a matter of course.

later on in veg, I'll sometimes topdress unfinished EWC. That's the hot stuff.

your growing in nothing but promix and perlite? curious as to why you didnt add something like compost or ewc to the seedling mix. not only would this help keep the mix's watering conditions more stable it will feed the seedling and get some microbe friends to help out.

also this thread is very helpful, its a sticky. it will save you tons and days of problems in the future.

Hi JayK

From my previous threads I gathered to only add perlite. Several people offered that opinion.

Thanks for that link. I will look over for sure. Thanks much.

I feel I should top dress in 3-4 days... not sure if that EWC I have is too hot as-is

get over your fear of worm poo rrog ....... it is all around great stuff and imho would be hard to overdo. EWC are one of, if not the best friend of organic growers. good shit:)

worm poo is not hot or cold.

In chinese medicine you have yin and yang - hot and cold.

That's the simple story. There is something beyond that is just "essence". It is neither hot nor cold (and not lukewarm either).

EWC is just like that.

It's all good GM! I'm thinking in a few days (after 1 week in Promix) I'll top dress with a bit of EWC and Promix and bury a bit of the exposed stem.

Here is what works for me:

-Use a fair amount of perlite (35-40%) in your seedling mix. This provides a nice airy medium that roots can easily penetrate. Overwatering is nigh impossible when using a lot of perlite but you have to watch them closely as this mixture dries out quickly

-Use “lift the pot” method (courtesy of BOG) to determine dryness of your seedlings.

-Check pot weights daily. I like to use a turkey baster to water individual plants (courtesy of The Rev). You’ll get the hang of how many squirts of water is needed for each plant.

This may seem tedious and it is, but I have enjoyed a very high success rate using these basic guidelines.

Hope this helps

-bakelite

Hello BL. I did this method with Perlite added. Stayed moist down deep, but as you say I found the tops dried out quickly. I spritzed the tops minimally. So far so good! Plants are all up and about 1-2" tall. Lights are maybe 5" from plants. 65F

Stay away from the sprayer until the seedling stems burst through their clear sheath as they fatten. This will help prevent damp off getting ahold of your stems.

I've never bottom fed my seedlings but it seems like a good idea.
