5 ton ac, Whats a good brand to purchase?

Had the AC guy come check out the spot today. I wana get a 5 ton on the roof. He is a partner of a good friend, but I can tell this guy is a total alchy, Not that that's a bad thing, but I better get a second opinion before we drop 5 grand getting this installed.

SO what is a good brand that's cost effective, Not trying to run a stealth unit cause were in a noisy ass industrial park.

Thank u !!

Im also looking for advice on a portable ac. I need one with a filter that wont exhaust smell from the room as the hot air vent will be connected directly outside.

if u want a rooftop unit, the evap coil is housed on the roof and u just create some tin ducting to duct the air/heat into your room.

you cant go wrong with York.

if you are using a residential unit and have the evap below the condenser a considerable amount, be sure to downsize the return line and increase the hot liquid line to keep the velocity of the refrigerant at optimal speeds. I can give u specs for lineset sizing if you choose a york unit.

greenluv707- yea no crap, thats what AC's do. Maybe he oversized his garage unit. WHen you have to supply and condition air to a whole house, its gonna take a lot longer than to cool down a garage.

An ac system is only as good as your installer. Period.

Agree totally with Midnight. One of the more inexpensive units is a Goodman but they have a poor reputation. After talking to several hvac guys they said the problem with Goodman is they will sell to any and everybody. From what they said go with a unit with an excellent warranty. The companies with the best warranties only deal with the most competent hvac installers.

jakeh- ha thats funny, cause as long as u have a business licence and cash u can purchase an ac as a wholesaler, they sell to anyone that has cash or credit

goodman has a 10yr warranty whereas york and carrier have 5 years

york and carrier are top brand units, were as goodman is the bottom of the barrel. goodman does use copeland scrolls.

american standard are piles of trash.

funny, you need to talk to HVAC guys cause you arent in the industry, you obviously dont know jack about the industry then

a rooftop ac just needs to be craned and ducted. there is no refer pipe running.

you are right when installing and running a lineset, the ac is only as good as the installer.

Not really any superb portable Ac's that will 100% elminate the CHANCE of smell leaking, but some do a decent job. My advice would be to tape on 6" ducting to the 5-5.5" potable AC exhaust and add in a 6" inline ozeonator to ensure if portable is the route you must go.

For the OP, get an excelair

Not an outdoor unit, but I did come across a Kwikool 1.5 ton portable yesterday...real pricey unit(1400).

I have to investigate it further.

no prob should work perfect :)

excelair may cost a little more then others, but I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. I shop from highest price down to what I can afford, ensureing I get the best for my money.

hahaha shows how much you know!!! excel takes the cheapest York unit possible, remotely relocates the compressor and doubles the price of the unit. They scammed you into thinking you are getting something amazing. They just use a cheap, basic, entry level 13 seer york YCJD condenser and airhandler. They take the shittiest, lowest priced AC that york has and makes you pay through the nose for it.

I think of excelair like bose, tons of money into marketing a mediocre at best product.

shuswap- I would go with a thermoplus. Reliable and stealthy. Comfort Air and FHP also make water cooled ac, pretty much the same thing.

I gots a Goodman. Prolly been in for 4 years. The installer said the commercial units are better than residential, installed a rooftop model on the ground pad.

yes the commercial units are better than residential because the evaporator and the condenser are right next to each other. No dips or gravity to deal with pulling and pushing refrigerant and oil. Residential units are not recommended to be above the indoor unit or vice versa. It can be done, but its stressful on the unit.

When dealing with a commercial unit, its a single piece unit. There is no AC installer to run refrigerant pipe!!! You just need a crane operator and somene to screw tin to it.

I dont mind goodman, they use copeland scroll compressors and offer a 10 yr warranty. They are cheap as hell and pretty basic. All ACs use the same components; compressor, siemens contactor, capacitor, coil, copper.

anyone can make a system plug and play, it doesn't justify tripling the price. You can have ANY HVAC company fit quick connect fittings on a system and a linset, I do it everyday.

York is a great company.

Just be known that excel sells you the cheapest unit at a hugely inflated price, with their logo slapped on it.

Thank you all for the advise.

I know a enough about AC to be dangerous, I've done a few mini splits and a bunch of gheto boxed in window units but I believe it's time to step up the game a little.

I'm gonna go with a 5 ton commercial unit, not the excell tho.

nice..5 ton commercial is the way to go.

is it going to do heat as well?
