Magnifying glass suggestion

Greetings Growkings,

Just a quick question for your pros out there.

What is a good magnifying glass for inspecting trichomes? and what is it exactly I am looking for to signify when the plant has surpassed it's peak growing efficiency period?

a jewellers loupe that you can find easily on ebay is perfect for looking at trichomes.
Cloudy triches are a head stone whereas amber triches are more body/couchlock hits

I got a 30x jewelers loupe from dealextreme a few weeks back, haven't had the opurtunity to test it with a live plant tough(I only grow outdoors so I don't have any plants at the moment)
but on some dried and cured weed the trichomes were visible with it, and visible enough that it would be sufficient to see the trichomecolor in flower I think

last year I used a microscope, since I had it laying around anyway(got it for free from a family member, it's an older microscope with a mirror instead of a lamp, but it's of a very good brand I'm told)
but that was for plants I had in the backyartd, and since I'm also doing guerilla this year I ordered the loupe
with the microscope I cut off a leaftip of one of the small leaves sticking out the buds, put it on a piece of paper under the microscope and used a flashlight(with a blueish led color) to provide light, with the lowest(least magnifying) lense of the microscope the trichomes where easy to spot and easy to see the color(at least the difference between clear and cloudy, I harvested at cloudy with no amber)

I found with a 100x scope, it is very difficult to focus in on the plant material. It also seems that if it is not perfectly still and on a stable surface, it made it even more difficult to focus. I have a 30x loupe and it works well! Its not perfect by any means, but does the job well. It takes a bit getting used to and make sure you have plenty of light when you are checking your trichs!

Ebay.

$3-$4 delivered.

I grabbed 4 when I found them, they work great.

They even have an attachment for the iBrick so you can snap trich shots.

I found the loupe with the keywords "60x microscope".

As I said, the scopes work great.

As far as the iBrick attachment, I don't have one or need one.

I use a macro lens on my DSLR or if I don't have that handy I use my Droid with an app called Magnify for macro photography.

if you can, get a couple of scopes..

the best are the ones where its just the glass, I think there there jewelers loop people are saying. the deeper you go into magnification the harder it is to hold a steady hand on the ones where you have a focus wheel, but I would get one as variety is nice..

cloudy is at peak, clear still has a ways to go, amber is degrading / past it's prime..

I've been holding off on buying a loupe because I thought they were expensive. I just got a 30X off of e-bay for 3.75 shipped. Not bad. I'm sure it won't be great but it'll do the job. Loupes just take some getting used to. Keep both of your eyes open. Experiment with the distance of the loupe between your eye and the object.

I had one of those lil plastic ones with the light on it. If you're going to get one of those don't, get two or three. Mine didn't last but they're definitely worth the price.

I love my 30x, so easy and simple, and it works like I want and trychoms have seen so good. trychomes and pre-flowers.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I dislike ordering stuff from Ebay because I always seem to need stuff right away lol. I'll check the local jewelers shops and someone even told me Radio Shack sells a good one or two.

Thank you also for posting the image of the trichome chart. I think I'm going for Amber Trichome's this time around. I want that couchlock feeling.

t33to, skip the Radio Shack scope. It is a pain in the ass to use, though it was my only instrument for years I have always hated it. Way to hard to get a good view while trying to work the focus wheel.

Go for a jewlers loop for a start. I found a 40x loop on ebay for less than $5 shipped. Check the location of the vendor and it will give you an idea of how long it is going to take to arrive. ( I live on East Coast so anything from NY to FL will arrive in 3 days max from day shipped).

Be careful going for ambertrichs :biglaugh: , it is easy to let them go too long and the THC begins to degrade. If you want couchlock, try around 20-30% amber. But, you are actually better off picking a strain that is known for its couchlock high vs letting a sativa go till its is mostly amber. It kind of defeats the purpose of growing out a sativa to begin with.

PhatPhreddy420, nice find on the 60x loop (I had to go order one already ). The little 40x I recently got works pretty well, and as Millhouse says you just have to get use to it. But, 60x would be a bit easier to work with I believe. I have tried the 100x scopes and they are just to strong for this particular purpose.

By the way, do you have a link or web addy for the IPhone adapter for this thing? Thanks.

t33to, good luck with your harvest and I hope you get the couchlock you are after. :ying:

Thanks man! The strain is between 7-9 and it's known for it's therapeutic and body relaxation properties. Problem is, I'm the first person in my crew to grow it out, so no one really knows when this particular pheno calls it quits. I'm hoping for 8 max!
