Excuses, excuses!

a good idea is to actually assume and outdoorsman's hobby. dont have an excuse, have the truth! when you have dirt, or plants you're probably in a pickle but if you're not ridin dirty its pretty easy to be "excused"

"i really AM birdwatching, see here's my binoculars, my bird book, my journal...."

"i am gathering wild berries, see here's my guide book and my bag of blackberries!"

"i am catching king snakes to get ride of copperheads on my land, heres my snake hook and my bag with a snake in it!"

just try to have the proper shit to make your story sound reasonable, you dont go hunting for berries with bicolulars and you dont birdwatch with a canvas bag. just be smart, think from a cop's perspective as if you would interrogate your self.

the best bet really is to be silent as a mouse and you you hear shit run like a mofo. most folks cant run too fast or too far, you oughta do both.

Im puzzled by the comments to "leave the magnet at home". A magnet wont stick to silver or copper and in a 200 year old junk pile where everything is covered in moss, or paint, one can check what type of metal is there with the magnet. If it doesnt stick, the metal isnt steel or iron, look closer.

Those making the suggestion should know that about 10 years ago, i put my magnet on a tar coated pot and it wouldnt stick. I scraped and saw that the pot was copper and had been used as a tar pot to fix a roof. After i cleaned it off, it turned out to be a 1778 piece of Revereware that was in pretty good shape and i recieved an handy 300$ for it. Ive found several pieces of silver as well. This is an old area and , there are quite a few 200 year old junk piles. My family moved to the farm i now live on in 1788 and we started a junk pile on the back of the property as soon as we moved in.

A Metal Detector would tell you if it's gold, silver or iron and how deep...

Coming out of the woods with a shovel and metal detector needs no excuse or explanation...

Who knows you might give up growing if you started pulling 1700's silver coinage out of the ground...:jump:

A metal detector is good -- a magnet is not. Silver, gold and coper are not detectable with a magnet.

I have a couple of metal detectors and am often out looking for old farm sites to hunt. Its a decent cover story too.

How about:

"Look over there officer. Somebody is setting up a grow op in the wooods!"

(I found these HIDs in the woods recently -- I kept moving and haven't been back. Looks like they stole them from a road construction project.)

Night opps ?

Night opps ?

The scenarios above are faily interesting, but un-clear in one fundimental way.
Are we talking day or night adventures?. I am looking to be doing some "Moonlighting" using nite vision to get around and would appreciate any suggestions on working with night vision goggles.
I just got myself a pair and it is fairly obvious that they are going to take a bit of getting used to.
Aside from obvious concerns about staying away from cliffs and such, what are some suggestions for successful (UNDETECTED) night work?

hahah nights the easiest one....... go 2 bait store buy a pack of night crawlers and put them in a coffee can full of dirt from the area and leaves. sure way outta that situation

I think night is by far the riskiest time to be discovered.

Don't count on night vision goggles to keep you from being detected. Most rely on infared lighting and are clearly visible to those using the much more expensive night vision that the government uses.

Your much more noticeable on the drive in, too.

I have

I have

if I were to grow weed in the outback I would have a great excuse. I am just out riding my horse. The cops never give me a second look ever. Even at road blocks they wave me through with the horse trailer. I have a shovel to scoop the poop................:thank you:

I think its important to know the police behavior in your grow area and act accordingly. I live in a rural area and the nearest town to my growing is about 6 miles. At night and until about 7 am, there are only a few cops on duty and there arent any driving around 6 miles out of town. The sheriffs dept doesnt patrol rural areas at night and the only possiblitiy of a state cop comming buy is pretty low - they tend to stay to populated areas 10pm- 7am

There is a sherrifs deputy living about 2 miles from me. I see him at the local store and he's responsible for checking the area over so he makes a loop around the local roads everyday at 3 pm. There is also a state trooper living up the road somewhere because he comes throug every morning at 7:40 am.

When you find a spot in the fall, its important to watch and see who comes and goes and when. The best approach to excuses is to avoid a situation in which you are asked whats going on.

at night you can say u had 2 take a crap so u ran out to the woods just make sure the cop hasnt been sitting at your car for 45 minz lol
