Rewind:

October 2010
My friends 21 year old son (lets call him Tom), who studies in a non medical state in the USA, sent me a link to 12 ballasts for sale he had come across on his local Craigslist.
The pictures looked good and the seller claimed they were like new and a "left over" from an abandoned project.
The price was attractive - about 2/3 of the price if brand new in the box.

A few emails between my friends son and the seller and they met @ a Walmart parking lot and the seller easily came down another 50 bucks. Tom bought just one.

So far so good.

Tom still living on campus and being the responsible kid he is focused on College and stored the ballast he had bought @ a rented storage facility.

March 2011 he moved to a condo his parents had bought for him.
Still being a single guy he figured he would use his spare closet for a little grow and started setting up things.
When he was ready to go he plugged in the ballast but it was a no go - it did not fire up the bulb.
Tom being an electrical engineer student he opened up the ballast to see if he could see what was wrong (maybe a burned out capacitor or something else easy to spot and fix).

Those of you who have seen a magnetic ballast without the cover on it know there is not much in there.

Tom spotted this about matchbox size container which was wired in to the existing electrical wires within ballast.
Two zip ties were holding it in place and an insulated wire went through the bottom of the base of the ballast and was looped around the base and attached with silicone in a very unsuspicious way.

Tom proceeded to cut out the mentioned little black box and up on closer examination it turned out to be a GPS transmitter.

The ballast he had bought did not fire up because it was wired internally for 220 Volt but Tom had plugged it in to a 110V outlet since it had a 110V plug on it.

Lucky him.

Long story short know the source of your used items or your growing career might end disastrous.

That's just weird.

Cops don't go through the trouble of doing shit like that so I don't know if the dude did it and was hoping one person was gonna buy the full lot of ballasts and then he could rip the grow or what, but thats the first time I've ever heard of a gps monitor inside a ballast.

This is totally believeable !The owner I love Hypoponics in Richmond Va. was busted with1200 plants and has setup over 13 customers and 1 friend of mine. He used craigslist to sell new & used equipment. My friend and his wife drove to Richmond and met the dude at his house.Within 5 min of walking in there new dreadlock wearing friend offered them a joint ,after burning with this guy he fed them lunch and talk about cutivating maryjane,my friend started bragging about his strains and grow-op.After a six month investigation the feds were brought in because my friend had grow-ops in Va & West Va, they placed a GPS device on his truck and found all his shit! Dont be a cheap ass buy new equipment and dont brag about your shit to anyone especially a fucking stranger! Beware of Craigslist! PEACE! Oh yeah my boy lost his house and has got 2 more years to go out of a 5 year sentance. Will try to post a copy of court papers.

I think police are still known to use these in ballasts they sell at police auctions. a 240 wired ballast with a 120 plug might make sense if the cords were chopped when they were confiscated then some random new cords were put on. just sayin..

I was just thinking the same thing.

Not that it really matters what they think, however being the curious kind I still would like to know.
For me I just thought it sounded like it was to complicated, and to much work for your average piggy.

I have heard of this in California.

I buy used equipment quite frequently. I have never had a problem either. I have four used ballasts that start up and run perfectly. Got 4 bulbs, hoods, and ballasts for $400. One of them hums a little, but it isn't too bad. Got my trays, reservoir, fans, and a whole bunch of other things. Even my TDS meter was used and works great!
