It can bite as many cops as it wants to... it still doesn't have rabies or else they wouldn't have released it back into the wild after its "checkup".

Is anyone having Holy Grail flashbacks?

It's a fucking squirrel.... I'm shocked to see the defense of the dumbest of actions.

Pepper spray doesn't kill rabies :D

If you are going to kill the thing, kill it. Don't pepper spray it and let it suffer. I doubt it had rabies, probably use to the kids feeding it.

Never said it did. I simply take exception to the idea that a rabid squirrel should be allowed to bite as many people as it can because it only has 48 hours to live.

Now you're simply splitting hairs.

Are we to judge a squirrel on the content of his rabies?

This one wasn't rabid, therefore he was entitled to all the freedoms afforded a nonrabid squirrel.

I think he should have bit more cops.

And how many people can it bite in 48 hours?

I second this, While peppersray was an odd and poor choice during this situation, if you see a wild animal you think has rabies, you have react quickly and effectively. Especially if children are around.

There are only two options.

1. SWAT and/or tactical nuclear strike

2. Pepper spray

The fool had no idea what he was up against.

Yeah! Because I know I'm getting really tired of reading about all the children killed every year by rabid squirrels.
We should just shoot them all on sight, just in case huh?

We must protect the children from the squirrels!!!!!!!!!!!

In all reality though, rabies has an incubation period of up to 6 months. If they thought it had rabies it would of been euthanized and it's head submitted for testing.
IF your dog/cat gets bit by another dog/cat, it's a 10 day quarantine in most states. If it is bitten by a wild animal or has a bite of unknown origin then most states mandate a 6 month quarantine or in extreme cases euthanasia.
Even though squirrels can carry rabies, there has NEVER been a recorded case of a human catching rabies in the U.S. from a squirrel.

From the CDC website:
Small rodents (such as squirrels, rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, and chipmunks, ) and lagomorphs (such as rabbits and hares) are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to cause rabies among humans in the United States. Bites by these animals are usually not considered a risk of rabies unless the animal was sick or behaving in any unusual manner and rabies is widespread in your area. However, from 1985 through 1994, woodchucks accounted for 86% of the 368 cases of rabies among rodents reported to CDC. Woodchucks or groundhogs (Marmota monax) are the only rodents that may be frequently submitted to state health department because of a suspicion of rabies. In all cases involving rodents, the state or local health department should be consulted before a decision is made to initiate postexposure prophylaxis (PEP).

For more information about rabies in rodents and lagomorphs, see: Childs, J. E., Colby, L., Krebs, J. W., Strine, T., Feller, M., Noah, D., Drenzek, C., Smith, J.S., & Rupprecht, C. E. (1997). Surveillance and spatiotemporal associations of rabies in rodents and lagomorphs in the United States, 1985-1994. Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 33(1), 20-27.

I think the squirrel was behaving normal for someone who just found out Palin is seriously considering running for Prez in 2012.

Squirrels are just wrong. Plain wrong.

The neighbor lady next door likes to feed the neighborhood squirrels some type of seedy squirrel feed.

This shit flies all over my fence into the best planting/sunlight receiving area making it completely useless.

Spray all squirrels.
