What's new

I think my internet was cut by my ISP because of my ballasts.

I came home a couple weeks ago to find my internet not working. I call my isp and they send out a guy the next day. When he gets here he tells me that someone came an disconnected my service because there was ingression flowing back into the lines from my house( they wrote it on cables). He says he cant reconnect my internet until he finds out where the ingress is coming from. I wasnt home apparently when they initially cut my connection. Anyways i decide that i probably shouldnt let him snoop around so i say that i just got a text and i have to leave for work immediately. I tell him I will call and schedule another appointment for someone else to come out tomorrow. He says "cool" thankfully and i quickly disassemble my whole grow. Its been 2 weeks and nothing has happened. I reconnected the internet myself outside the house. Just an FYI. I had 1600w worth of digital ballasts. 1 lumatek and 2 from htg. If you have digital ballasts you may want to look into getting a network card. Sorry if this is common knowledge. Stay Safe!

You should build a RF shield for your ballast. What bulbs are you running?
Should be a how to for Faraday cage DIY on google

Maybe its your ballast and you need to replace them with a newer model. Some place on here is a thread talking about it. it maybe a combo of your ballast and bulb.

i think you can test it with an old radio and you will see it turn to static when close to the ballast or when it comes on it fucks up the radio.
and other items with the RF noise

Oh man my stupid cable internet got shut off also. They say it's because of "signal leakage" apparently they're required to shut you off If you have too much leakage occurring as only a certain amount is permissible by the FCC. I cant have them come over and fix it because I don't want them looking all over my house for the problem. Now I have an iPad with a 3G connection. Fucking sucks! I miss my high speed connection. I guess maybe it is the ballasts? Other than that I have no clue why I'd have this problem. If you find out keep us posted.

A signal leakage is caused by cracked or old wires, splitters, etc. Have either of you added lines/connectors and used a cheap wire? And how old is your cable wire? Chances are the leak is somehere outside due to wires or connectors dry rotting because of the weather.

The signal that they are picking up is the signal put out from the cable. When this happens it can interfere with emergency radios and even radios in aircraft. If it were the ballasts they'd still get the leakage after the shutoff. They don't have to go near your grows to look for the leakage unless you have cable in the room. They'll use a meter to detect where the leak is coming from.

I have issues with my lumatek is this possible?? Please elaborate on what you describe JJ about leakage and interference with radios,

If its signal leakage or high signal output its old shitty wires, the box, or your wall socket. Literally yesterday had comcast over, grow is downstairs, all tvs upstairs. I was nervous but its not obvious in the basement and locked. Guy came in ran me a new wire, gave me new wall box's and now everything is working flawless.

He didn't snoop around at all, got in and got out, didnt even consider going downstairs.

I've had cable guys in my basement for repairs before. Once I realized there were no cables running through my grow room and odor was under control due to plants being in veg, I consented to their entry. And then I stayed with the guy the whole time he was in the basement.

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. When the tech came he said he needed to go in the basement and check the splitter, I told him I rented the basement out and that wasnt possible so he said he couldnt turn it back on until it was checked. I ended up canceling cable and getting DSL. I suspect it was my Lumateks, my place is only a year old so I doubt it was faulty cable or connectors.

No offense to those of you who cancelled your cable service, but wouldn't it be better to fix the interference instead of getting a different internet provider? If your digital ballasts are causing it and you can't figure out how to change it, then get magnetic ballasts.

Maybe but it didnt occur to me at the time my ballasts could have been the problem, and Comcast flat out sucks anyway. They shut off my service on a Friday afternoon and didnt tell me a damn thing. I called them and told them my internet wasnt working and the fucking dumbasses told me most likely the modem was bad (didnt have a clue that a block was placed on the line) so I spend half the day exchanging the modem at their office which obviously didnt fix it. Only when the tech came on Monday was I told about the interference problem. Their service sucks and their customer service sucks even more.

Damn, any new info/ updates OP? It would be nice to find out if electronic ballasts did in fact cause that kind of interference. After reading the link JJ provided it seems more than likely that it's probably a different issue. Then again, it seems like more than a coincidence that so many other people have been having issues that have those ballasts... they can't all be signal leaks from old wires, or can they?
