I ran the ducting a little further into the tent, and turned it towards the light, so the intake is blowing right on the hood.

Not a bad idea.

Here's where we are with the temperature at 12" under the hood, after about 2 hours, venting straight back into the same room the tent sits in (about 3 feet away)

None too shabby. Actually seems to be running in the opposite direction, which is fine by me!

Woke up at 5 AM for a glass of water, and just couldn't help but go check out the temp. It was 76 degrees 12 inches under the hood, after having run for about 7 hours. Exhaust was dumping straight into the same room, so I'm confident that if I just put it OUTSIDE of that room, I'll be all set.

Next project:

The fan is currently mounted to the joists.. Even after I put the final ducting on after the fan, there's enough noise and WHIRRRR (and probably vibration) UPSTAIRS in the living room, .. That's probably not going to fly. :)

I'm thinking of just building a fan-stand of sorts, .. Basically a 1"x6", wide enough to screw the fan mounts on to, on a pedestal. Maybe some weights/sandbags on the bottom of the dilly to hold it down, ..

But I definitely don't want to keep it mounted to the joists, or even the wall next to it (which is then connected to the joists!).

Anyone had any similar hiccups? I'm not the most mechanically inclined, so this little carpentry project might prove to be interesting. Just hoping to have all 10 digits when I return for the update.

this is just a crazy idea, but what about attaching a plywood panel to your joists, lining it with yoga mat, maybe two layers, and sandwiching it with another plywood panel?

Uh yeah, like they said...
Hey SIlver, gotta love this site for input. You can never have enough friendly experts mulling around.
My thread is lonely, my carpet must stink or somethin.....

Your thread CAN'T be lonely - I'M there! How dare you insinuate that my company alone isn't enough to give you the warm and fuzzys..

But, yes, the carpet does stink. Like the morning after a frat party, lots of spilled cheap beer, maybe some vomit, lovejuice, who knows what else..

But I'm willing to overlook that, because .. Well, I'm really not sure why. Some odd sense of loyalty.

Well, so far, I have some rubber matting (about 1/4" thick, from an anti-fatigue-style mat) underneath the "feet" of the mount, in between the joist and the fan mount itself.

At this point, I'm less about experimenting with what may work, and more about constructing something I'm pretty damn sure will work. :)

It's sad, really. What's a stand consist of? Four legs, a top, and some bracing of some sort for the legs.. For a dumb college guy like me, that's pretty damned intimidating..

if you don't have power tools, home depot now has cheap Japanese pull saws. they make manual sawing a breeze.

No worky. Still voooooshy & whirrrrrry.

I'm hoping maybe I can find an end table typea deal at the secondhand store. That would be a total score.

Is the noise mostly from vibrations, or is it just because you are moving so much air? My fan just literally sits on top of the tent, and it has a homemade exhaust silencer attached to the end and its almost silent.

Good question. I think it's a little of both. I don't think it helps that it's literally 8-12" underneath the floor where we congregate.

I think I'm going to work to get the fan closer to the ground, away from the ceiling (and floor!)

However, I'll need a hacksaw or Dremel to get the damned fan off the joists, because a dingdong like me stripped one of the screws putting it UP there.

UPDATE!

Sweet. Girlfriend just came over to drop off some crap. Asked what she thought of the relative noise of the fan upstairs, .. All good. WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED.

I sound so whooped, .. and maybe, .. Well, .. Yeah.

Better to be blessed and whooped than just plain old whooped.

New vent situation all set up, trial-run-heat-style is underway.

400W HPS air cooled hood about 12" from the thermy. Exhaust venting into the next room nearby (which is essentially connected) Let's see what happens here, ..

Only have about an hour and a half to let'er heat up. Company comin', so it's shutdown willie after that. Official research to resume upon evacuation of le premises.

Next up: Need to set up a dedicated circuit for this shiat. Hmm.

After that: Gas - begin cookin' with it.

Hmm. 10 hours in and I'm at 82 degrees. No bueno.

That's at about 12" below the light, however. (Being a little aggressive in my testing)..

I oughtta move the light up to about 18" and see where that gets us..

After just about 3 hours with the hood at 18", we're back down to 79. Things appear to be all set. Will have to keep an eye on it, per always, but I'm satisfied with where we are.

Also, I checked out VerdantGreen's modular SCROG. Love the concept.. I read somewhere else that someone using smartpots (the fabric-y ones) said they had to be a bit ginger when moving them around/taking them out for whatever reason, etc..

So, with that in mind, I'm wondering what's the best way..

OR I may just K.I.S.S. and grow a couple mini shrublets, .. We'll see. Need these frickin' roots to take so I can begin cookin' ...

Found this doodad this weekend. Pretty good score.

I was thinking about an X-10 solution for the timers issue, but this appear to be just fine.

It's an 8 outlet surge protector. Four of those outlets are on individual (4) timers. The other 4 are on-at-all-times. For a small setup like this, I think this will be killer.

Now just need to get a dedicated circuit goin' here..

too cool and youll get unwanted fungus/bacteria in the rock wool from not respirating properly.
got that fan running full time?
how long does it take to get above 80 in there with it off?

Nice power strip!

x-10's scared me just cuz my fear of the being tripped by stray activation rays. One of those paranoid things I like to hold onto. They have remote deadlocks, i though those were neato
