I am no one special nor am I a really smart guy so take from this what you will.

I understand that plant leaves do not shade out as much usable light that the plant uses. The plants sees light differently than we do, so where we see shade still much of the good light that the plant needs gets through.

So is my understanding on that.

I also understand that if you over defoliate too quickly you risk a higher leaf to calayx ratios in the bud. So is my basic understanding on that.

Their are ways to mitigate and some strains and techniques work better than others. I have seen good results with both.

Grow em if you ya got em!

In my last two runs I've started stripping all the big fan leaves during the first 3 weeks of flower. It really turns the plant into a whole different monster, I'll never go back.

I've been goin by that as well. Anything damaged/infested/blocking cola it goes. Suspect light green ones get a gentle tug and if they come off easy then that's good but any leaf that presents a struggle coming off has probably got a good photo system going and should stay.

I like when people use defoliation instead of toping, taking off the big fans to alliow good branch growth underneath, while the plant is producing more branches. Plus you get that fatass main cola

I personally have observed that a well lit plant does not grow as well while shading many other areas, people top for this reason, but that's unnecessary IMO

I've read that the leaves act as little factorys that convert the available nutrients to food that the plant needs to grow, removing them leads to smaller buds, I don't remove any leaves unless I'm topping or the leaf is obviously on the way out.

Yea, but we supply extra nutes and so the plant does not need the 'factories' as much. I thought they stored nutes but anyways.

My feeling is, that you can safely pluck 2 weeks before chop. The plant is about done anyways. I would wait till after stretch is over to do any plucking, and not all at once.

is there a certain time when its definately a no go to remove any fan leave, i.e PK time when there fattening up or beginning of flower when there growing. What about after the stretch would this affect them as much.
