san diego residents (or those in the know): Ocean Beach vs Pacific Beach

Which do you prefer? I hear there are very few jobs in both places and a high cost of living, but I can be a simpleton in my version of paradise if required (and semi-legal pot + warm weather ocean =paradise for me, friends).

FWIW, I'm into:

growing (I'll have a 9-5 though). Maybe two if required. And a very handsome savings account.

Dogs (how dare you sir, not in THAT way. :) )

sushi

fishing. particularly shore fishing and pier fishing

I've had one person tell me that Ocean Beach is where homeless people and drug addicts go to conjure up petty crimes, be annoying and lower the aesthetic... whereas Pacific Beach has all the girls and the bars. I've had another person tell me that Ocean Beach is where all the interesting people/hippies hang out and Pacific Beach is where the UFC Bro's/materialistic-obsessed types go to do cocaine in hummers. I'm guessing the truth lies in the middle?

Thoughts? Thanks!

PS: The main thing I'm worried about is A)crime and B) Socal materialism. I'm not broke but I don't like that perspective. Los Angeles grosses me out, for example. I don't fit in at all. I drive a piece of shit and will never upgrade. Just don't care. I spend my cash on gals and books and food.

Hi, I live in OB and love it. This is a one-of-a-kind American town. PB just next door has a very different vibe: you nailed it when you said bars, bros and annoying aggressive drunk people. PB is for frat guys, OB is for the adults. True, lots of homeless, but OB is just dripping with color. And we've got that awesome pier.

I live in OB and love it. IMO the homeless issue is overblown-plus its not like pb doesn't have homeless as well. pb is good for an occasional night out, but i would never want to live there.
If you like dogs there is no better place than dog beach in OB.
You should be able to find a place cheaper than that

OB ftw, PB is for partying in not living in. OB is a chiller vibe and dogs are always welcome there. Sushi can be found anywhere in Dago btw. Oh and fishing is great in OB too! :joint:

Thank you so much guys.

So where the hell do all these people work? I hear there is no local economy outside organic produce and things of this kind.

Would it be unreasonable to land a job downtown and commute?

Most don't work in OB. Its easy getting anywhere in SD from OB, commute to downtown is easy as long as u have a car. Don't know about bus/trolley as i never used them.

I lived in PB for 10 years and loved it, the local LEO are cool just make sure you aren't the biggest idiot (this is very easy in PB) and they will leave you alone. That said, I agree with the posters here saying OB is better as I have lived there 2 years now and love it.

Wow so many OB residents around here! I will say that if you live deep in OB it can be kind of a bitch getting in and out as there's just one main road. Rush hour kind of sucks but only a little.

OB is very laid back, it's great place to live. It's awesome to take walks on the lower cliffs south of the pier. PB is great if you like the night live.
