high Rouge, what i used was a hurricane glass i got at a local craft store, they're made to provide a chimney of sorts for candles and such.

and ZAPOT, i think you're over-thinking this, especially if you are new to growing.

first, understand that we use more red in flower and more blue in veg because we are attempting to replicate the effects of the sun on our plants, so they grow big and fat for us.

...the reason for that is that, due to the angle of the sunlight as it passes through the atmosphere, we get more blue light in the spring and more red light in the fall.

but...we do get both red and blue at all times, just in different ratios, so you, as the sun, must try and provide what your plants evolved to need.

if you're still relatively new at this, don't wait until you have the absolute perfect set-up, just pop some beans and learn from your plants while you at the same time continue your research.

peace, SOG

Thank you for your good answer. Now, when we both understand plant´s growing element (the plant needs both red and blue at the same time in sufficient level) let me ask why is it that a lamp with particularly red and blue suitable for a plant at the same time in one tube of 55W PL-L is not widely available? Even if growing would be a little waste of some wavebands and energy when compared to what you are doing?

I´m sure that some companies producing "plant lights" have given some "effort" when making their "product" to get it a "competitive" one.

For me it is a bit more important not to hassle around with my plants too much then totally maximize the possible yield or potency or even to save a few pennies. Not trying to offend. I have seen some very nice results from a red/blue mixed bulb before that did impress me. KISS.

Could it be a beneficial thing to have a group called: For Your Convenience Only. Let´s call that group FYCO, shall we? ;)

Whoops... Sorry... Can anyone advice how to create a social group over here as i don´t seem to know how to?

I have grown one plant of commercial strain for hemp oil that is not supposed to contain any significant levels of THC to get anyone high and guess what? I used vertical 2 x 55W PL-L 4000K without reflectors in a small cab and a washing machine ball (plastic ball no bigger then your fist) as a pot for the whole grow and i got over 5 grams dry total from a 2' long plant which is the max. height for it.

I could have got about 15 grams max. from that strain if grown in a bigger pot etc. but that was just to test my abilities to grow from a seed in the first place with some challenge. I used to have a tendency to kill all my houseplants by not remembering to give water etc. so i´ve given up on that one a long time ago.... this plant just happened to keep my interest on it and it´s all a learning curve for me! I like PL-L!

Now i need to get some of those particular PL-L´s to do the same again to see the result out of that... KISS :D

Edit:

......... UUUUH!

That was a long story? To put it in real short:

You don´t have to be interested in buying that particular PL-L in any way. Just do a favor for the people who are willing to give it a try a chance to find it by just asking from the suppliers that lamp so that some of them will start stocking those as that seems to be the problem, ok? Thanks!

btw. I personally have spent over a year to find a plant lamp in a form of 55W PL-L.... KISS :thank you:

Hey guys,

I need some advice, I want to put some pl-ls in my mini-fridge, it already has a 150w hps but I wanna put some 6500k ones in there. I'm thinking about putting them vertically because I have more space to do so just about 36", so I was thinking about putting the ones that are about 2'. I'm new to this kind of stuff though and I want to wire it myself because its obviously the cheaper route haha. I'm having a hard time deciding where to buy from and what to get, Im thinking about the workhorse 8, with 3 21" 55w 6500k off planetbulb. Just curious how do I wire these the ballast to the lights? I know I'm gonna need to buy sockets, can anyone refer me to a good site? I'm also just wondering, is the workhorse ballast loud? I already have some things that are not a noise problem but if it needs to be somewhat quiet. I'm assuming since running the ballast out saves alot of heat too which is what I need. Now for mounting them, I can just put the sockets on a small piece of 2x4 correct? I'm going to be putting 1 on each side of the wall. I'm gonna get the 2g11 ones off 1000bulbs, but not sure if the wattage makes a difference.

Also it is possible to wire them on each of the walls of the fridge correct? They would be going vertically not on the top or hanging.

Thanks a ton guys.

Workhorse 8 is a great choice for a ballast and supplementing HPS lighting but remember as far as heat goes, watts are watts. 150w of PLL will heat the cab just as much as 150 HPS overall, it will just be a much more evenly distributed heat.

So, 4 more 55w PL-L's will add 220w heat to the cab. As far as noise goes, I can't hear a workhorse 8 with my ear to it.

Adding PLL's to HPS is a great idea for spectrum but you will need less wattage of PLL's V.S. the HPS you are running. Maybe adding 36w PL-L to 150 HPS would help but exceeding your HPS wattage with fluoros will disappoint you with the results in both heat and yield. Computer fans aren't going to cool that much light.

I see I see, well for ventilation like I said the td-100 does a pretty good bit of work, 135cfm in a small mini-fridge. Maybe 2 or 4 36w PL-LS might be better or maybe 1 or 2 55w? I wanted to try to put one on each wall. Like I said im new at the PLL so wiring would be somewhat a challenge.

Stumbled across this club, and figured that this would be a great place to show my first Pl-l grow. :tiphat:

2 plants, one clone and one seed. 2 gallon pots, 100% coco and GHE nutes. Vegged for a month and flowered for 70 days - all under 110w, 2700k pl-l.

FC89 take a look at ahsupply.com they have kits that take the guess work out of wiring and have reflectors with the kit. Cost a little more but worth it.

Lights hanging from sockets.

Lights hanging from sockets.

I'm trying to get my lights set up but the sockets don't hold the bulbs tight.I have tried to jam a piece of cardboard paper between the light and socket, but it still hangs.Right now I have them resting on a piece of metal.I got the sockets from 1000bulbs.com.Has anbody else had this problem? Is there a fix or should i invest in a different set.
Thank you guys for pointing a new grower in the right direction.:tiphat:

they sell brackets to hold them .look in the pll club thread or do a search for pll brackets on ebay or google.or you can use what you made or wrap with wire to support

Buy the clips! I ran into the same problem but i had aluminum wire laying around. So i drove a screw into the top of my cab about 3/4 way in (used a 1 1/4" or something) I cut a piece of wire and wrapped around the screw tight and then took it around the light. kinda hard to explain in words. It works on all 8 of my lights perfectly.

Happy Growing:thank you:

I would not tie the wires down the the ballast the ballast do get warm. Also you need to put a light trap over your intake if this cabinet is going to be used for flowering.
But good job on getting rid of the carboard

I second gdbud!! I wouldnt have the wires resting on the ballast, they do get very hot!!! Also, in case there is a cut in the insulation and it touches the ballast. I am not an electrician but I know it wouldnt be good!!! I just looped the wire around and hung it on a hook.

I just wired up 3 fulham workhorse 8s. what are you guys doing to fix your ballasts? I've got 2 just screwed to 2 2x4s so that the majority of the ballast hangs over a gap between them, but on my mother cab, it's just screwed to a thin piece of plywood.

I realize how hot they can get so I want to be safe.

I untied the wires from the ballast thanks gdbud and Millhouse.
Also I built a light trap using ScrubNinja blueprint. It feels good after a year and a half of reading here everyday, to finally put my knowledge to work.:blowbubbles:
