Are autoflowering strains subjected to light leaks hermie prone as with standard 12/12 strains... Say for instance my outdoor plants are subjected to street/porch lights, will they herm?

:thank you:

not unless you have a really crappy an unstable strain....

I think you are missing the bigger picture here

They do get moonlight, and believe me that one is many many times stronger than the ones from streetlights..

I think they ill be fine! what strain were you thinking of running?

My cab has TONS of light leaks, never had a auto hermy... EXCEPT sour60, but i think this is strain related because alot of people had their male sour60s push female parts.. Also my male was in a cab with NO LIGHT Leaks...

So theoretically, I should be able to run a auto on a 18/6 light cycle in a tent with plenty of leaks or outside directly under a porchlight and it should remain male or female respectively? No Herms? Just like a tomato or other similar veggies..

I would say yes, and also that when grown indoor you wouldnt have to even close the cab... Maybe Im wrong but wouldn't it be fun to grow directly on your desk like a regular green plant ?? :p

Yes it would... I was just thinking how cool it would be, but then I thought about odor control : )

Any more input on this??? Also I currently have some autos on 24/0 and would like to drop them down to a 18/6 or a 20/4 light schedule... Should I do so immediately or gradually over a week or two??? I don't want any herms : )

I got a tid bit for a few of you to chew on.

For the most part and from all the research done when the AF gene is dominant it appears more often then not, that any hermie traits are not expressed. I have done countless test crosses and I have seen this many times, most new AF crosses that ever show any hermie traits in the F1 and F2s... 99% of the time are NON AF plants.

1 time in an F2 selection run for AF pheno hunting, of a distant project I chucked for other reasons.., out of 90 plants 34 where AF, the other 56 where NON-AF. Out of the 34 AF plants there was ZERO hermie traits. Out of the 56 NON-AF 25 of them mostly females showed various degrees of hermies, from the couple male preflowers to an full on banana fest female flower top!

This has shown many times in the R&D I have seen, BUT! As we subject the Original AF genes to more and more genetic diversity, outcrossing over and over again to other NON-AFs, it is bound to have an effect. An instance where other genes present in the NON-AF parent effect the way the AF parent expresses hermie resistance, can and will happen. It seems there are a few so called stable AF strains now showing hermie traits even when most AF research has showns a resistance.

Oh and to answer your question,, NO during many projects in developing an easy FEM Seed Technique, TRUE STABLE Auto-Flowering strains can NOT be hermied by photo period. Even random photo periods have been tested. But like most things there are exceptions, the best thing to do bro is look for reports of certain strains you are wanting to grow and stay away from any AF that shows hermie traits. If you do that you should be golden.

Peace :joint:

oh just flip it right away bro, no worries.

IMO, the best True AF Schedule is 24/0 until Sexing, then move down to 20/4 until harvest.

All hail SGS!!! Thanks for the quick genetics lesson SGS, it was exactly what I was looking for. Can't wait till the bay sends me your pinkbud and secret citrus!!! The more I learn about autos the more I fall in love :)

Ruderalis/Autoflower light leaks

In response to some of the replies....Autoflowers will ALWAYS produce seeds if let go past their harvest time, this is part of their non-phototropic behaviors. Ruderalis as a whole sub-type is a creation of stress (they were created in areas that got 18-24 hours of summer sunlight, which is why they had to learn to auto-flower or else they never would be able to reproduce) this is a trait of any autoflower seed as they are all ruderalis based crosses. So it can't be necessarily chalked up to light leaks or any other stress factor

explain Mexican ruderalis. :thank you:
LOL

we can talk about the theories of AF evolution if you want, your opinion is easily disproved. by fact

the autoflowering mechanism is a genetic tool that was spawned off temperate relativity to help further reproduction during extreme weather situations like ice and cold. keeping the genetic of a strain in perpetual momentum from year to year with its previous and forthcoming generations thus it can easily be explained that autoflowers genetic variation is a remnant of the ice age or other extreme weather situations. I can think of how the autoflowering gene could help improve a generations survivability in extreme heat situations aswell.

The auto flower trait is a defense mechanism used by all cannabis plants(dormant) because without it all the strains we see today would have been extinct had they not been resolved by their previous ancestors in autoflowering forme. Yes I'm saying all cannabis we see today came from ruderalis. and at one point on this earth there was only ruderalis. But im not saying that ruderalis came before the other plants this is their resolve and they can revert back and forth among a population to better suit the survivability of the group among a host of different environmental influences.

So did ruderalis come before indica? I don't know
Did indica come before ruderalis? I don't know
Are all marijuana plants related in a way that would ensure their genetic survival in a multitude of different worldy environments that lets them revert to their previous ancestors when a suitable time arises? Yes, atleast from what we've seen so far.

Well, yeh, except that "Mexican Ruderalis" has rather murky origins, possibly being a hybrid itself, and that nobody has ever documented wild autoflowering populations in Mexico.

http://azarius.net/encyclopedia/54/Autoflowering_Cannabis/

There is some confusion in that other wild non-autoflowering populations are sometimes referred to as "ruderals".

Some believe that Russian Ruderalis is descended from domesticated cannabis, while other believe that it's just another ancient variant of wild cannabis. Nobody knows for sure.
