Okay...

These pics are a month old. I don't remember why I took them specifically. Shit, I don't remember much at all. Mayhem, my friends, mayhem.

These had been out of the PPK for at least a week during harvest and general negligence. So if you wish to draw conclusions on moisture profile, take that into consideration.

This pic is a bucket overturned. You can see the fabric sides, and the padding of coco I did above the circle bottom... You can see root-bound-ness into the 'tailpiece'. The rest of the coco down the PVC was root free. The tailpiece was saturated with the dark wetness:

picture.php

This pic shows the outer fabric pealed back showing more coco than root mass. If you look carefully, you can see the fabric circle I used to try and separate the roots from the tailpiece.

picture.php

This is a pic of the fabric circle pealed off. You can see the central wetness... If you've followed oldone's thread, you may have noticed my suggestion that there may be a cone of wetness. It appears to be true even in a media based wick.

picture.php

Here is a pic of the other side of the circle. Clearly, the fact that I didn't have roots penetrating the reservoir was not the consequence of my super clever fabric design. The roots grew through it....

picture.php

This is the rootmass on the interior side of the circle, with the fabric peeled away, and the debris pulled off.

Pic of total coco root ball, undressed:

picture.php

Loose coco, scuffed off. If I recall, I scuffed off the coco about 1/3 of the way through. I can see different root structures.

picture.php

This is the root ball, with lots of the coco worked off. The top mat was quite dense:

picture.php

I tried to get a picture of the center root ball that was the original solo cup. This photo doesn't really capture the details well, but I bet that if I had trimmed off all the roots, I could have dropped it right back into the cup.

General observations:

There was no root ringing around the pots. But the root ball was significantly smaller than the volume could have held.

The top third of the root ball was a dense mat of roots. The remainder of the container was occupied by 'water type roots' of thicker structures with less secondary development.

Longer veg time may have significantly increased root development, and all that comes from it...

---

And that, I think, wraps this thread/diary up.

Hi IF, seasons greetings.

Great pics, interesting observations. Is "root ringing" a bad thing?

You've had quite a wild ride with this crop. What changes will you make for the next run?

Later,

I've got a couple of ladies chillin' under a t5 waiting for me to get my act together on new space.

The new space will dictate the shape I try to train them towards...

The girls are already much larger than the size these ladies started, but they've been ignored and underfed for the last month. Nevertheless, I'll be starting with way more roots. I'd like to veg them out longer--there seemed like plenty of space for more roots when I broke these root balls apart.

Jacks from the beginning.

Better training for sure. I have a couple of kinda neat ideas, but they still have details not worked out...

I want to go perpetual.

huntingbb: somewhere between excellent and mediocre, depending on who you ask and what matters to them. Certainly did not set any land speed records, but slightly exceeded minimum expectations.

Little update: This might be the beginning of what should already be done. Vegged since 10-15-10 under a t-5. We're talking OO timelines, but with a bit more growth. They were transplanted into un-pulsed PPKs (currently hand-watered) about ten days ago and are almost done coming out of stasis:

And so it begins again...

I just moved the plant on the right in the first picture of the post above into flower. The one on the left will follow in 16 days. The third one (invisible in the photo) in 32 days, etc. As I get things sorted (if I get things sorted), I'll have four plants in 12-12 and two in veg... perpetually.

I'm afraid I let them get too big, especially the one on the left in the pic above. Well, I guess I really mean that she'll will be way too big in two weeks. I might have to drop light intensity, or do something rather clever to manage her overall bulk.

Aggressive defoliation?

Believe it or not, I have all my camera components under one roof. I am, however, too damn lazy to go and take shots now. Maybe sooner than later.

The flowering space is not fully built out yet--still needs a second light, some venting, and another month and a half to get the girls into cycle. But I think I know what I need to get it together; it is just a matter of sourcing what I need and getting it pulled together. Little things like picking out the perfect carbon can to be the foundation of my Tower of Power. It'll be even cheese-y-er in real life.

I hope.

All the basic pieces and parts mentioned above were acquired.

And they are in place.

And they work.

(At least I think they do. Figure I'll know if the timer doesn't work if the lights stay on.)

I still have to take care of some small things: picking up the construction debris, so I can find the metal tape, so I can finish the detail taping for the venting. But the fan is pulling, temps are low, and the flowering space is bright as hell. I don't have my bulk reservoir set up yet, or my pulse feed. But my pump with manifold is sitting and waiting, and I have plenty of feeder line. I hope I have enough 1/2 hose to make my full run to the sub-reservoirs.

There's a ton of light bouncing around the flower space, as there's only one lonely girl living in there. As much as I just want to toss in another plant, patience is in order.

Like D9, I want to be in flower cycle forever.

woo hoo!! seems your doing good over there, progress in a great direction!!

Ive been holding off, letting my bro's relationship die and settle before i go into flower, but after that i'm setup for back to back to back for several runs, and massive time to get ready for runs after those.. (i'm vegging 3 runs out).

keep those girls happy... and they'll do the same to you :D

bb, good to hear you got shit lined up... Let that relationship die... then flip some rooms!

I have my space set up.

I have light, and ventilation.

But I also have a fucked timer.

And now that I look at it, I can see how I fucked it.

Probably should have read the damn instructions.

Education, whether it be in institutions of higher learning or your own garage, is expensive.

Is it worth it?

Its always worth it. You learn something new every day...if you're lucky.

Sounds like you've got a good plan together...why am I not surprised?

Any thoughts about running different genetics? Looking forward to some sweet pics.

I'm still battling my inability to clone these ladies with any degree of predictable success... Sometimes, a month or two taking after cuttings, I get a root or two.

So yeah, new genetics are coming in play. I'm running out two more of the originals, and then transitioning to something new. Like you, oldone--barring some unforeseen disaster--I'll have jars of this line stashed for years to come...

I hate to give up the line, but sometimes it's time to move on.

try getting a heating mat for the clones? that saved my arse... i combined that with rockwool/root riot cubes and generous clonex for great success

bb,

I think I've done it all. Rapid rooters, coco, turface, aero, ambient temps in low eighties, in the dark, in the light. On a train, in a plane.

I have never had so much trouble with cuttings as with this strain. I will do a significant 'clean up' of my next girl right before she goes into flower. Of the resulting cuts, I'll use a clean blade, do my final cut under water, leave in the rooting hormone for a while, and move into fresh Rapid Rooters.

If they take, they take.

If they do not...

She looks lonely in there. I'm sure she'll have company soon. Whats that funky tower looking thingy in the veg pic?

Bored again I bet...

Now that I have the timer issue fixed, I am really quite bored. I kept fucking up for a couple of days, which was kind of exciting. And educational. And expensive. And frustrating. But now I don't have any more of that to look forward to: I learned, I spent, it's over.

I still have to plumb up the main reservoir. And I might have problems with overflowing my reservoirs with the pulse feeds in early veg, as I have each sub-reservoir controlled by an independent float valve. The answer might be to plumb overflows of the veg buckets back into whatever sort of unit is hosting the pump.

The funky tower thing is a tower fan. It osculates, takes up a small foot print, and pumps out ions if you want it to for odor neutralization in veg.

Oh. That reminds me that I still do have to get more air management/circulation sorted before the next few months go buy. Maybe if I ignore it until it becomes a problem, it will make for something interesting.

Plant foliage is perfect and green and boring.

The plant in the flower room is about 30" tall, and it is the silly photo angle that makes her look so diminutive. Her top foliage lined up with the base of the bottom bulb when I flipped her. Dead Head Fred, if I recall correctly, recommends such a thing. But she doesn't stretch so much, so if I get a bulb of vertical growth out of her, I'm right on DHF's old-school-krusty-bucket-based-experience positioning for post flower illumination.
